RE: Academic Adviser
Dear Search Committee,
I am writing to you today to apply for the position of Academic Adviser. I bring with me experience as
a training specialist, teaching at a University, and guiding prospective students who are navigating the
admissions process for undergraduate and graduate programs at Arizona State University Online. I
have gained the skills and knowledge through these roles to affect positive, overreaching outcomes in
the position listed.
I am currently a Training Specialist for the Arizona Supreme Court. I am assigned to the Court
Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program. I train roughly 30 volunteers monthly on how to
advocate for the best interest of children who are in the foster care system. After training, these
volunteers are assigned to cases by a dependency court judge. In my role I must utilize adult learning
principles in order to engage with adults from various backgrounds. I also utilize online technology
such as WebX and Moodle to administer online trainings as well.
Before transitioning into a training role with the state of Arizona I was employed at Pearson, the
Educational Company, as an Enrollment Advisor assigned to work with Arizona State University
Online. I gained experience using computer applications in a higher education setting to help give the
best support service to students as they navigate the admissions process. I utilized PeopleSoft,
Microsoft office, and Laurus Technologies. Every day I would have genuine conversations with
prospective students and it is through those conversations that I helped determine eligibility for any
undergraduate or graduate programs that were offered at Arizona State University Online. I specifically
worked with students who were interested in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. I am very
familiar with the programs in your college and I would be excited to transition from a training
specialist to Academic Adviser. I have gained the knowledge and skills during my time at Pearson to
succeed at as your Academic Adviser.
I also have two years’ experience teaching Communication 101 to undergraduate students. I taught for
two years at Central Michigan University. I have 27 hours in graduate level communication courses. I
am graduating with my master’s degree in Educational Leadership with an emphasis in Community
College Leadership at Northern Arizona University. My graduation date is May 2018.
I look forward to speaking with the committee in greater detail about what I can offer as your
Academic Adviser at Arizona State University.
Warm Regards,
Jake Dover
