BACKGROUND
I took piano lessons from age five to eight, then stopped playing music until I was twelve, at which
point I taught myself harmonica by listening to a lot of blues music. I began playing guitar when I
was twelve. At age thirteen I started taking lessons with Karl Allweier. I continue lessons with Carl
to this day. I also play keyboards and saxophone. I’ve had sporadic lessons on the saxophone but no
formal training: I play mostly alto sax, but also occasionally play tenor. I also taught myself bass
guitar and electric keyboards. For the past few years, I have focused intensely on studying and
listening to African American music, from gospel to hip hop, which I find very inspiring, both
historically and musically. I began composing a few years ago.
