What are Endangered Species ?
An endangered species is a type of organism that is threatened by extinction.
Species become endangered for two main reasons:
● loss of habitat
● loss of genetic variation
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) keeps a “Red List of
Threatened Species”.
The Red List defines the severity and specific causes of a species’ threat of
extinction.
Red List has
seven levels of
conservation

their last life has been stolen,

Endangered
Animals species
01 Black Rhino
Populations of black rhino declined dramatically
in the 20th century at the hands of European
hunters and settlers. The black rhino is still
considered critically endangered.
In Indonesia, anyone caught hunting tigers could face
jail time and steep fines. But despite increased efforts
in tiger conservation—including strengthening law
enforcement and antipoaching capacity—a substantial
market remains in Sumatra and other parts of Asia for
tiger parts and products. Sunda tigers are losing their
habitat and prey fast, and poaching is an ever-present
threat.
Sunda Tigers 02
03 Blue Whale
The blue whale has a heart the size of a Volkswagen Beetle. Its
stomach can hold one ton of krill and it needs to eat about
four tons of krill each day. They are the loudest animals on
Earth and are even louder than a jet engine.Whales are at the
top of the food chain and have an important role in the overall
health of the marine environment.
The Sri Lankan subspecies is the largest and also
the darkest of the Asian elephants. The Sri
Lankan elephant population has fallen almost
65% since the turn of the 19th century. Today,
the Sri Lanka elephant is protected under the Sri
Lankan law and killing one carries the death
penalty.
Sri Lankan Elephants 04
Human activity can also contribute to
a loss of habitat. Development for
housing, industry, and agriculture
reduces the habitat of native
organisms. This can happen in a
number of different ways
Development can eliminate habitat
and native species directly. In the
Amazon rain forest of South America,
developers have cleared hundreds of
thousands of acres. To “clear” a piece
of land is to remove all trees and
vegetation from it. The Amazon rain
forest is cleared for cattle ranches,
logging, and urban use.
Factors leading
animals to become
endangered
Endangered Plant Species
06
Monkey Puzzle Tree
Native to Chile, it is the national
tree, but development and loss of
its natural habitat have harmed its
wild growth. It was also collected
as a popular yard ornament too.
Fortunately, it does grow well in
conservation, but also is not a high
priority endangered plant.
Venus Fly Trap
This was a favorite plant of many a
child, but the plant is steadily
disappearing from its natural
habitat due to deforestation. It is a
carnivorous plant and plays an
important role in controlling insects
to promote the healthy growth of
surrounding vegetation. Since it has
no value as a commodity, never
becoming more than a novelty
item, there is little effort to save it.
Black Bat-Flower
Proper name – Tacca Chantrieri,
was poached and collected to near
extinction. The blossoms of the
flower are large, reaching almost a
foot in diameter. The velvety petals
are surrounded by a whisker like
froth that can reach to the ground.

Red Sandalwood
Sandalwood has always been a
highly sought tree. The Pterocarpus
Santalinus is a very premium type
of sandalwood that has high
medicinal properties and healing
effects. This substance is further
used for skin care as well.
Ebony
Because of its colour, durability,
hardness, and ability to take a high
polish, ebony is used for
cabinetwork and inlaying, piano
keys, knife handles, and turned
articles. It was employed by the
ancient kings of India for sceptres
and images and, because of its
supposed antagonism to poison, for
drinking cups.
Flame Lily
Experts have attributed the plant's
altering pollination cycle to the
drastic change in temperature and
natural calamities. Farmers in
Karnataka are also not inclined to
grow the plant as it is slow to
propagate. It only produces one
offspring in a year. But the plant is
considered a money spinner in
Tamil Nadu.

Top reasons why plants become
endangered
● Poor soil quality, climate change, and other environmental factors can also result in
the death of plants. These threats are often difficult for plants to recover from,
putting them at risk of becoming endangered. Unlike animal species, climate
change is not the main reason, but the responsibility is at the hands of man.
● Humans are also responsible for many cases of plant endangerment.
Deforestation, development, and other human activities can destroy or damage
habitats, making it difficult for plants to survive. In some cases, humans also
introduce new pests and diseases to an area, which can have a devastating effect
on the local plant population.
● Disease can also kill a plant, making it vulnerable to pests and other threats. Many
diseases are spread through contact with other plants, and can easily travel from
plant to plant in a garden or field.
What Can We do to
fight Habitat Loss ?
1. To start, one of the best ways to combat habitat
loss is by reducing your own carbon footprint.
You can do this in a number of ways, from
driving less often to saving energy at home.
2. Reducing your reliance on fossil fuels will help
minimize greenhouse gas emissions, which
contribute to global warming and can lead to
the destruction of natural habitat.
3. Another key step you can take is supporting
organizations that advocate for environmental
protection. This might take the form of
volunteering or donating money, but it’s critical
that we work together to save our vulnerable
habitats from further harm.
4. In addition to these individual actions, it’s also
important that we become more informed
about the causes and impacts of habitat loss.
We need to learn more about what’s happening
both locally and globally so that we can make
informed decisions and hold our leaders
accountable for their actions.
Easy things we can do to save
endangered species
Learn about endangered
species in your area
Teach your friends and family
about the wonderful wildlife, birds,
fish and plants that live near us. The
first step to protecting endangered
species is learning about how
interesting and important they are.
Our natural world provides us with
many indispensable services
including clean air and water, food
and medicinal sources, commercial,
aesthetic and recreational benefits.
join our activist network to receive
updates and action alerts
Buy recycled paper, sustainable
products like bamboo and wood
products to protect forest species.
Never buy furniture made from
wood from rainforests.Recycle your
cell phones, because a mineral used
in cell phones and other electronics
is mined in gorilla habitat. Minimize
your use of palm oil because
forests where tigers live are being
cut down to plant palm plantations.
Overseas trips can be exciting and
fun, and everyone wants a souvenir.
But sometimes the souvenirs are
made from species nearing
extinction. Avoid supporting the
market in illegal wildlife including:
tortoise-shell, ivory, coral. Also, be
careful of products including fur
from tigers, polar bears, sea otters
and other endangered wildlife,
crocodile skin, live monkeys or apes
Recycle and buy sustainable
products
Never purchase products
made from threatened or
endangered species
Thank You for your
