UMTS is a third generation mobile cellular system based on GSM that supports transfer rates of 42 Mbits/s. The first national consumer UMTS networks launched in 2002 providing mobile applications such as Mobile TV and Video Calling. UMTS improved upon earlier mobile phone technologies.
