MP After nearly seven years on PPL you
continue to look flawless, how do you
preserve your youthful look?
SM Ha! First off, thank you for quoting Beyoncé in an
interview question, that always gets extra points
Skincare is something that is really important to me
and something my mother taught me from an early
age.Mybiggest tipwould beTAKEYOUR MAKEUP OFF
BEFORE YOU SLEEP! No matter how tired I am, even
if we wrap at 5 AM after shooting all night, I never
crawl into bed without washing my face and taking
mymakeup off! I use Biore’s Baking Soda Pore Cleans-
er in the morning AND night to wash my skin and re-
move any leftover makeup.
MP Does your skincare regime change in
the winter?
SM My skin definitely gets dry in the winter from be-
ing inside in the heat. So I tend to reapply moistur-
izer throughout the day. Also,my lips get so chapped
in the winter from the cool wind,so I amp up my lip
balm game!
MP You have the most luscious locks. How do
you keep both your length and body?
SM Hair masks are key! I have product and hot tools
on my hair almost every day of the week because we
film PPL five days a week.So to keep my hair from get-
ting completely fried, I will do a hair mask or even
just lather it up with coconut oil once a week.
MP How do you keep your skin healthy while
on the road?
SM The Bioré Self Heating One Minute Mask are my
JAM on the road! They are perfect, already measured
out (soyou don’t use too much),and theyheat upwhile
they are on your face — which I LOVE!And pore strips!
Two things that are perfect for keeping your skin look-
ing good and freshwhileyou are travelling.

E
ach year, on October 27, people world-
wide raise awareness of a severe, painful
inflammatory disease that affects about
125millionpeopleworldwide—psoriasis.
It’s normal for skin cells to mature
and shed over the course of a month. But in a per-
son who has psoriasis, autoimmune signals cause
skin cells to form in three to four days — pil-
ing up on the skin and causing thick, red,
and scaly patches of varying sizes. Dur-
ing a flare-up,which can be triggered by
stress and cold weather, the skin can be
itchy,painful,and tender.
Noticeable symptoms of a chronic
skin condition like psoriasis can often
lead to some patients suffering from so-
cial isolation and even clinical depres-
sion.“Just imagine what it would be like
to see someone cross the street to avoid
interacting with you,” says Dr.Lyn Guen-
ther,a professor of dermatology at Western
UniversityinLondon,ON.
Topical therapy, which includes creams,
gels and foams, is viewed as a frontline therapy
to treat psoriasis. Almost all patients use a topical
treatment either on its own or,in more severe cases,
in combination with treatments such as photother-
apy,oral,orinjectablemedications.
The various topical treatments work by slowing
downornormalizingcellreproductionandreducing
inflammation of the psoriasis patch or plaque. The
most commonly used contain a steroid or synthet-
ic forms of vitamin D,or a combination of both.Ster-
oids reduce inflammation and vitamin D slows the
growthofskincellsthatbuildupinpsoriasispatients.
Other topical therapies include coal tar, which
helps slow the growth of skin cells, and salicylic
acid, which smoothes the skin by promoting the
shedding of psoriatic scales. There are also prod-
ucts that contain aloe vera, jojoba, and other in-
gredients that help remove psoriatic scales as well
as moisturize,soothe,and relieve itching.
There is an effective treatment for almost every
psoriasis patient. “If older therapies have not been
effective previously ask about new ones,” says Dr.
Chih-ho Hong, a board-certified dermatologist and
founder of SkinFitMD,a cosmetic dermatology clin-
icinSurrey,BC. “Therearealotofoptionsoutthere.”
Advances in treatments
Although topical formulations can be effective, they
can be inconvenient to apply. But thanks to con-
tinued efforts to develop effective, safe, and conven-
ient therapies,newtopical treatments have recently
been introduced.Foam preparations of corticoster-
oids,for instance,are well accepted by patients,and
mayleadtoimprovedadherencetotherapy.
One such addition to the available topical treat-
ments for psoriasis is a spray foam formulation that
combines a steroid and vitamin D. This treatment
provides good penetration of the active ingredients
intotheskin,andimprovedcontrolofpsoriasissymp-
toms, compared to the same ingredients in other for-
mulations. The foam delivery system provides a pa-
tient-friendlyandconvenientapplication;itworksin
muchthesamewayaspraysunscreendoes.
There are also other new approaches to topical
psoriasis medication in development, including the
use of nanostructured lipid carriers loaded with the
psoriasis medication, methotrexate, to deliver the
medicationrighttotheskin.
Dr.RonVender,adermatologistbasedinHamilton,
ON,anticipatestheoptionsforpsoriasispatientswill
continue to grow. “I predict, down the road,we’ll see
avarietyofnew,safer,andmoreeffectivetherapies.”
Finding the right therapy through
conversation
To find the best treatment, patients should sched-
ule an appointment with a board-certified derma-
tologist and ask him or her informed questions.
Finding the best medication can be a matter of trial
and error for someone with psoriasis, but it’s well
worth the effort to improve qualityof life.

HOLIDAY TIP➊

in food + drinks!
3. HOLIDAY
TIP➋
Festivities,shopping,
and cooking can be
stressful. Don’t forget
to treat yourself!
LookYourBestThisHolidaySeason
Battle Wrinkles, Fine Lines, and Other Signs of Aging
Everyone loves the holiday season — what
with the carols, the big man in a red suit,
along with festive feasts and holiday parties.
Butifyouwanttofeelbeautifulandconfident
this holiday season, there are some skincare
mythsworth nut-cracking.
➊ You don’t need UV
protection in the winter
It’s freezing cold and the skyis gunmetal grey,
but don’t be fooled. The sun is shining and
UV radiation is contributing to wrinkles, fine
lines, and even age spots and discoloration.
“If you can see your hand in front of your face
there is enough sun foryou to bewearing sun-
screen,” says Dr.Julia Carroll,a dermatologist
at Compass DermatologyinToronto.
Specialists recommend a sunscreen with
broad-spectrum protection from both UVB
and UVA. Obagi Healthy Skin Protection
Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion fits
the bill. It’s formulated with a combination
of a physical sunscreen (micronized zinc ox-
ide) and a chemical filter, and it’s suitable for
all skin types! Remember, the snow on your
driveway is more reflective of UV rays than
the sand on the beach last summer.
➋ Dry and itchy skin is
unavoidable during the winter
Weather,low humidity,and dry indoor heat
doesn’t have to lead to dry, itchy skin. You
just need to increase the moisture in your
skin and keep it healthy. You can do that by
combining Obagi Hydrate, which provides
deep skin hydration,with Obagi Profession-
al-C Serum. It also enhances moisture —
which makes wrinkles less noticeable — and
brings the many anti-aging benefits of vita-
min C,including collagen creation.
➌ Skincare regimens are
only for celebrities
You don’t own a Gulfstream jet and a lux-
ury jeweller won’t pay you to wear his neck-
lace, but you don’t have to be a celebrity to get
skin-enhancing procedures. For the cost of
a high-end facial you could get Clear & Bril-
liant, a gentle 10–20 minute laser care treat-
ment that prevents the visible signs of aging.
Dr.Carroll says it helps “those just starting to
see the effects of aging and thosewho have al-
readyhad more aggressive treatment.”
➍Invasive treatments
are the only way to see skin
improvements
There are many non-invasive treatments to
make your skin appear more youthful. Vari-
ous forms of botulinum toxin reduce the ap-
pearance of wrinkles and prevent new ones
from forming. Microdermabrasion and
chemical peels lighten fine lines and
improve skin tone and texture.Dr.Car-
roll’s clinic provides clients with a
three-month program based on
the Obagi Nu-Derm System,
which transforms the ap-
pearance of aging skin.
“This is one of our most
popular treatments,”
she explains. “As a
physician,I supple-
ment this system
withTretinoin.”

However, Toronto derma-
tologist Dr. Julia Carroll says
the dry, dull skin that often ac-
companies colder months isn’t necessarily con-
nected to the weather.
“The big thing that affects skin in the winter
is humidity,” she says.“Alot of people blame it on
theharshoutdoorconditions,butitactuallyhasa
lot do with the indoor conditions: dry, forced air-
type heating, which is low in humidity, can real-
lyaffect our skin.” She adds that these conditions
can also exacerbate eczema symptoms.
In order to keep your skin feeling soft and
smooth all winter long,Dr.Carroll offers the fol-
lowing top tips.
Get a humidifier
“Our skin has highwater content, sowhen the air
is dry it’s trying to balance itself by pulling water
from anywhere it can, including our skin,” ex-
plains Dr. Carroll. In order to retain your skin’s
moisture and keep eczema from worsening, she
recommends using a humidifier, particularly in
thebedroom,sinceitisaconfinedspacewherewe
spend(hopefully)aroundeighthourspernight.
Cool it with the heat
It can be tempting to crank the heat in the win-
ter,butDr.Carrollexplains“highertemperatures
arealsogoingtodryouttheairmore.”Ifpossible,
she advises turning down the heat before turn-
ing in for the night.
Moisturize daily
The best way to combat dry skin is to replenish
lost moisture by applying hydrating creams — or
creams specific to sensitive or eczema-prone skin
— regularly. These lotions can help reduce eczema
flare-ups and act as a protective barrierwhenven-
turingoutintoharshoutdoorconditions.“Thebest
time to moisturize is when you first get out of the
shower and still have a bit of thewater left onyour
skin,”saysDr.Carroll.“Patdryandapplymoisturiz-
erontopanditwilllockinsomeofthatwater.”She
adds that exfoliating once aweek can get rid of dry
skinandhelpmoisturizersbebetterabsorbed.
Shorten showers
The shower can be a welcome respite from the
cold weather, but standing under hot water for
long periods of time can further dry out skin
and irritate areas with eczema. Keeping your
routine short and the temperature warm — not
hot — will go a long way for your skin.
Don’t forget sunscreen
Summer isn’t the only time you need to protect
your skin from the sun’s UV rays. While UVB
levels go down in the winter,UVA rays stay con-
sistent and can damage your skin.“It’s import-
ant even on the bleak days of winter to wear
sunscreen,” says Dr.Carroll.
Winterhasnotyethitinfullforce,butit’snever

Carroll advises starting your cold-weather skin-
care regimen as soon as you bring out the winter
coats,in order to keep skin from drying out,par-
ticularly for those with eczema: “It’s always hard
tocatchup,it’sbettertopreventtheissue.”

Dermatologists Channy Muhn
(left) and Nathan Rosen (right)
have been specializing in
aesthetic medicine for over
a decade. Learn about
anti-aging, skincare, and
how patients today
can look their best at
any age.
Mediaplanet Everyone wants
great skin and a youthful,
healthy glow. What are the
most common concerns you see
from patients today?
Dr. Channy Muhn Patients today want to
look as good as they feel. They take care of
themselves,they exercise,they eat well,but
they don’t feel the outside matches the in-
side. They want to look less tired, less angry,
less saggy, more radiant and most import-
antly,theywant to look natural.
Mediaplanet How do you determine
what’s best for each patient?
Dr. Nathan Rosen The key to a successful
outcome starts with the patient assessment.
As dermatologists we have a unique under-
standing of skin, facial anatomy, and the ag-
ing process. Combining this expertise with
experience and an artistic eye allows us to
precisely tailor treatments to each patient
for lasting,natural results.
MP What would you consider the
ideal anti-aging treatment plan?
CM Ensure your dermatologist focuses on
what’s most important to you. But an ideal
plan would combine injectables to treat fine
lines and volume loss with lasers to correct
imperfections and improve skin quality,along
with a carefullyselected skincare program for
maintenance. Each is great on its own, but
combinedtheresultsareoutstanding.
MP Speaking of skincare — how
important is it to overall results?
NR Skincare is more important than people
realize. Patients may be doing regular treat-
ments with injectables and lasers, but how
they take care of their skin in between can
have a big impact on how long results last.
Routines don’t need to be complicated.Daily
use of medical-grade antioxidants and sun-
screen are a must for all skin types, and we
can also suggest excellent products that
support corrective treatments.
MP Are you seeing any new trends?
CM We’reseeingatrendtowardssmaller,more
regular treatments that allow for gradual, in-
cremental changes. This lets tissues respond
naturally and gives the patient more control
overtheprocess. Lesscansometimesbemore.
NR Younger patients are also wanting to
take better care of their skin and looking
for ways to prevent the damage that leads to
premature aging,which is great.It’s always
easier to prevent than to correct.
MP What advice can you share
with women and men considering
cosmetic treatments?
NR Do your research. Be sure you know
who is doing your treatment, what their
qualifications are, and how much experi-
ence they have. In experienced hands, to-
day’s treatments are extremely safe and
effective, but it takes years of specialized
training to achieve natural-looking results
and avoid complications.
