Recent events have higher news value than earlier happenings. News is
most valuable within the first 12 hours of it happening. If you're reporting
on an issue or event that is happening now, it's very important to
publish as quickly as practical.
Proximity
Stories about events and situations in one's home
community are more newsworthy than events that
take place far away.
Impact
The number of people whose lives will be influenced in some way
by the subject of the story.
The facts and events that have the greatest effect on the
audience are the most newsworthy.

Arguments, debates, charges, countercharges, and fights increase the
value of news. When there are strong opposing viewpoints on an issue
that's relevant to the community, news value increases.
Prominence
If someone famous did or said it, the story has
more news value than if an ordinary person did or
said it.

When lots of people in the community are discussing an issue, it has
currency and stories about the issue increase in value.
Novelty
The weirdness of an event can make it newsworthy.
