 It is a formal process to predict the environmental
consequences of development activities, to plan
measures to eliminate or reduce adverse effects and to
augment positive effects.

15. IEE
 Understand the objectives of the project-What are the activities and
why the activities are proposed
Stages:
 Forming Investigation Team
 Screening to know environmental sensitivity
 Terms of Reference is developed
 Assessing potential impacts
 Formulating mitigating plans
 Reports to decision making authorities and disclosure to redesign
project.
 If no significant impact project passes through IEE and funds are
committed

16. Full EIA Study
 Reserved for activities when screening or IEE shows significant impacts. It
involves greater efforts and in-depth assessment.
 Information gathered from IEE are used to prepare terms of reference for
the EIA.

17. Environmental Impact Mitigation
 Mitigation is the implementation of measures designed to reduce the
undesirable effect of a proposed action on the environment.
3 Types
 Prevention and control measures: Changing site, changing raw
material, abandoning the project.
 Compensatory measures: Making improvement at some other places or
domain in order to offset the environmental impact in one area.
 Remediation measures: Restoration of the environment after the
damage is done. Eg Mining site is restored by planting trees to prevent
soil erosion, Clean Ganga Campaign.

18. Environmental Monitoring
 Formal measurement of key environmental indicators
over the affected area over time in order to identify
deviations. It also includes
 Effectiveness of Mitigation measures
 Indicators of environmental health and ecosystem
functions are also measured

19. Environmental Audit(EA)
Pre Audit activities
 Training of employees, external relations with community, pollution
treatment and discharges, Effective use of resources etc.
Audit Activities at site
 Undestand the reality, Questionnaires, survey, discussions etc.
Post-Audit activities:
 Collected data is coded and tabulated
 Draft report is prepared
 Final audit report prepared for critical decisions even to the level of
making changes in the environmental policy.
