ERIK ERICKSON’S IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT STAGES
PsychosocialStage1 -Trust vs.
Mistrust
• Birth to 1-Year-Old
• Trust can occur when baby is nurtured
and kept safe and warm, and when
supplied food and shelter. Without this
babies will develop mistrust. And this can
occur when babies are abandoned or
mistreated, and exposed to negativity.
PsychosocialStage2 -
Autonomy vs. Shameand Doubt
•1 To 3 Years Old
•Developing self esteem through being
independent, and succeeding. Feeling
shameful will happen when not
succeeding, and then doubt will play its
part since the independence was down
graded.
PsychosocialStage3 -Initiative
vs. Guilt
• 3 To 5 Years Old
• Beginning to take initiativetowards the
outcome, imitating who nurtures and
cares. An example would be if a mother
wolf howls so does her pup. This is the
start of an individuality. Guilt will happen
if attempt to copy fails or is rejected.
PsychosocialStage4 -
Industry vs. Inferiority
• 5-12 Years Old
• This is the learning skills process,
including most importantly social
skills. Inferiority will arise when
there is no success in social skills or
possessing skills wanted.
PsychosocialStage5 -
Identity vs. Confusion
• 12 To 18 Years Old
This is the stage of identifying a
sense of self and a gain of personal
identity, also gaining relationships.
Confession comes in when they
have no direction or purpose, and
the feeling of being unsure.
PsychosocialStage6 -
Intimacy vs. Isolation
• 18 To 40 Years Old
• Forming relationships with friends
and having love relationships, with
little or no friends or having
difficulty understanding and
forming love relationships creates
isolation.

JAMES MARCIA’S IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT
PsychosocialStage7 -
Generativity vs. Stagnation
•40 To 65 Years Old
•This stage is all about productive
work, which usuallytakes years to
develop, helping others such as a
mother who looks after her children.
An adult more concerned with
themselves rather than other people,
an adult must deal with issues they
are concerned so that it doesn’t lead
up to stagnationlater inlife.
PsychosocialStage8 - Integrity
vs. Despair
•65+
•Withintegritya person canface death
with peace of mind, knowing they
livedlife to the fullest and
achievements knowing they
succeeded in life. A sense of despair
plays its role when a person wastes a
lot of precious time, and is unable to
change what was wasted.
The First Step
• the adolescent must break away from
childhood
The Second Step
• the adolescent must make a
commitment to their individuel identity
