2. Type of documentary
● The documentary is a mixed documentary as it
includes interviews, archive footage and a
voice-over.
● The narrative structure of the documentary is a
non-linear single stranded documentary, with
binary oppositions.
3. Camera work
A hand-held camera follows Manson around,
allowing the audience to feel as close as possible
to him and his life, also presenting the
information in the documentary in a unique way.
All the interviews are filmed in similar ways,
usually that of a medium close up. The
interviews with Marilyn Manson are slightly
different though as it can be low angle shots.
Showing a status divide between Manson
and the viewer.
4. Interviews
● Like camera work, the majority of it is filmed in
medium close up, but sometimes the camera
can cut to a close up. The interview is
conventionally filmed using rule of thirds. As are
most of the other interviews.
5. Mise-en-scene
● All the interviews have a mise-en-scene that
corresponds to their respective involvement in
the documentary, the backgrounds help to
anchor their relevance to the topic. An example
is Marilyn Manson is interviewed inside his
dressing room, presumably before a show. He
is the topic of the documentary and is filmed
where he spends a lot of his time before playing
a gig.
6. Sound
● The sound used in the documentary includes
that of a slowed down heartbeat during the
murder reconstruction, this anchors the danger
within the scene and adds a sinister tone to the
scene.
● Diagetic sound of Marilyn Manson and his fans
interacting at one of his concerts.
7. Archive material
● The archive material that is used in the
documentary is concert footage, funeral
footage, footage from the school shooting,
press conferences, Marilyn Manson's music
videos and news footage from the crime scene
of the school shooting.
