5. ❏Memorial View
- Formulated by Zwingli, the
Lord's Supper is a memorial of
Christ's death. He is not
physically present, but
spiritually present for believers
in a special way during the
supper.
6. 6
THE THREE-FOLD MEANING OF LORD’S
SUPPER
The Lord’s Supper is:
a.) a reminder of what Jesus did in the past;
b.) a symbol of our present relationship
with him; and
c.) a promise of what He will do in the
future
8. Point:
- Instituted by Christ on the
evening of His death (Matt. 26:26-
28)
- Practiced by the early church
(Acts 2:42-47)
- Explained by Paul in the Epistles
(1 Cor. 11:23-26)
14. IDEA:
- The word “Eucharist” came
from the Greek word,
‘eucharistia’ means “giving
thanks,” but in a Jewish
context is directed specifically
towards giving thanks to God.
16. IDEA:
- This is a private time when
the redeemed gather for
fellowship around Jesus Christ.
The table reminds the
worshipper of the provisions
which Christ has made for his
own.
17. NOTE:
The believer is reminded of
Christ’s humility and our
responsibility to serve one
another. It was at the Lord’s
Supper that Jesus washed the
disciples’ feet, an act of humility,
devotion, and love.
21. 21
The ELEMENTS
Point: In the LS, Christ is particularly
and emphatically remembered in His
sacrificial death
Bread - it represents the body of
Christ, broken into pieces
Wine - it signifies the blood of Christ
shed for the forgiveness of sins
23. 23
Heart and Mind
Term:
“unworthily” = It is not the partaker
who is unworthy, but the manner …
> This is a serious matter that has been
neglected by many modern churches
> Instead of drinking a cup of blessing, it
becomes a cup of cursing . . .
25. 25
Perpetual and Regular
1 Corinthians 11:26
“For as often as ye eat this bread, and
drink the this cup…”
> You proclaim the Lord’s death…
“until he comes”
29. 29
1. OPEN COMMUNION
Note: This is open to all that the
church may invite
- To all who profess to be
Christians
- To all without discrimination
30. 30
2. CLOSED COMMUNION (RESTRICTED)
Note: Only members of the local
church may partake of the Supper
- Grounded on its connection with
baptism as entry into the church
31. 31
3. CLOSE COMMUNION (STRICT)
Note: Only the validly baptized
believers may partake
- This will include member of other
Baptist churches
33. 33
IDEA:
Having now considered the church in its
foundation, organization, and ordinances, it is
fitting that we should also give some thought
to its mission and
its destiny.
34. 34
Questions to be asked:
- What is the mission of the church?
- What is the church to be doing?
- What are the scriptural mandates for
the church?
36. 36
IDEA:
Man’s chief purpose is to glorify God. This
is no more true of the individual than it is
of the church as a whole. The Scriptures
repeatedly point this out as
the primary purpose of the church.
37. 37
“That ye may with one mind
and one mouth glorify God,
even the Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ.”
- Romans 15:6
38. 38
“5 Having predestinated us unto
the adoption of children by Jesus
Christ to himself, according to the
good pleasure of his will,
6 To the praise of the glory of his
grace, wherein he hath made us
accepted in the beloved.”
- Ephesians 1:5-6
39. 39
“11 In whom also we have obtained
an inheritance, being predestinated
according to the purpose of him who
worketh all things after the counsel
of his own will:
12 That we should be to the praise of
his glory, who first trusted in Christ.”
- Ephesians 1:11-12
40. 40
“13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye
heard the word of truth, the gospel of
your salvation: in whom also after that ye
believed, ye were sealed with that holy
Spirit of promise,
14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance
until the redemption of the purchased
possession, unto the praise of his glory.”
- Ephesians 1:13-14
41. 41
“11 If any man speak, let him speak as
the oracles of God; if any man
minister, let him do it as of the ability
which God giveth: that God in all
things may be glorified through Jesus
Christ, to whom be praise and
dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
- 1 Peter 4:11
46. 46
“11 And he gave some, apostles;
and some, prophets; and some,
evangelists; and some, pastors and
teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints,
for the work of the ministry, for the
edifying of the body of Christ:”
- Ephesians 4:11-12
47. 47
“13 Till we all come in the unity of
the faith, and of the knowledge of
the Son of God, unto a perfect man,
unto the measure of the stature of
the fulness of Christ:”
- Ephesians 4:13
48. 48
“14 That we henceforth be no more
children, tossed to and fro, and
carried about with every wind of
doctrine, by the sleight of men, and
cunning craftiness, whereby they lie
in wait to deceive;”
- Ephesians 4:14
49. 49
“15 But speaking the truth in
love, may grow up into him in
all things, which is the head,
even Christ:”
- Ephesians 4:15
50. 50
“16 From whom the whole body fitly
joined together and compacted by
that which every joint supplieth,
according to the effectual working in
the measure of every part, maketh
increase of the body unto the
edifying of itself in love.”
- Ephesians 4:16
51. 51
“26 How is it then, brethren? when ye
come together, every one of you hath
a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a
tongue, hath a revelation, hath an
interpretation. Let all things be done
unto edifying.”
- 1 Corinthians 14:26
52. 52
POINT:
The church is to indoctrinate its
members, develop the graces of the
Christian life in them, and teach them
to cooperate with one another in the
service of Christ.
55. 55
“26 That he might sanctify and
cleanse it with the washing of water
by the word,
27 That he might present it to himself
a glorious church, not having spot, or
wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it
should be holy and without blemish.”
- Ephesians 5:26-27
56. A.There is a purging that
the Father performs
(John 15:2), chiefly
through divine
chastening (1 Cor.
11:32: Heb. 12:l0).
57. B. There is a purging
that the believer
should perform
(1 Cor. 11:28-31; 2
Cor. 7:l; 1 John 3:2)
58. C. There is a purging
that the believer
should perform
(1 Cor. 11:28-31; 2
Cor. 7:1 ; 1 John 3:2)
61. 61
IDEA:
Jesus gave the great commission, not only
that men should be made disciples and be
baptized, but also that thereafter they
should be taught “to observe all” that he
had commanded them
62. 62
“20 Teaching them to observe all
things whatsoever I have
commanded you: and, lo, I am with
you always, even unto the end of
the world. Amen.”
- Matthew 28:20
63. Paul directs the
believers at Philippi to
be interested in all types
of worthy knowledge -
Philippians 4:8
66. 66
“Go ye therefore, and teach all
nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father, and of the
Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”
- Matthew 28:19
67. 67
“And he said unto them, Go ye
into all the world, and preach
the gospel to every creature.”
- Mark 16:15
68. 68
IDEA:
The church is debtor to the whole
world, that is, the church is under
obligation to give the whole world an
opportunity to hear the gospel and to
accept Christ.
69. Evangelization begins in a
study of needs (John 4:28-
38; cf. Matt. 9:36-38), and
so every church should
study missions.
70. (1) missionary intercession (Matt.
9:38),
(2) missionary contributions (Phil.
4:15-18)
(3) the sending of missionaries
(Acts 13:1-3; 14:26; Rom. 10:15),
(4) in going forth into the mission
fields (Rom. 1: 13-15; 15:20).
71. F. TO ACT AS A
RESTRAINING AND
ENLIGHTENING
FORCE IN THE WORLD
71
73. 73
“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if
the salt have lost his savour,
wherewith shall it be salted? it is
thenceforth good for nothing, but
to be cast out, and to be trodden
under foot of men.”
- Matthew 5:13
74. 74
“14 Ye are the light of the world. A
city that is set on an hill cannot be
hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and
put it under a bushel, but on a
candlestick; and it giveth light unto
all that are in the house.”
- Matthew 5:14-15
75. 75
“Let your light so shine before
men, that they may see your
good works, and glorify your
Father which is in heaven.”
- Matthew 5:16
76. 76
POINT:
Believers are to make known God’s
righteous requirements of man and the
need for repentance and regeneration.
To this end, we are the custodians of
His truth
78. 78
IDEA:
While the believer is to separate from all
worldly alliances he is yet to support all
causes that seek to promote the social,
economic, political, and educational welfare
of the community
79. 79
“As we have therefore
opportunity, let us do good unto
all men, especially unto them
who are of the household of
faith.”
- Galatians 6:10
80. ❏ He always subordinated physical
and other material help to the
spiritual. He went about doing good
and healing all that were oppressed
of the devil, though he never lost
sight of his principal mission (Acts
10:38-43)
Our example: Jesus Christ
81. ❏ Jesus may have fed five
thousand as a humanitarian act,
but he certainly did it primarily
as a testimony to his own
power and deity
Our example: Jesus Christ
82. ❏When Jesus turned the
water to wine he showed
kindness to the wedding
party, but he also
“manifested His glory”
Our example: Jesus Christ
83. ❏It appears that he healed
the man born blind in
order to win his soul
Our example: Jesus Christ
