2. What is design
thinking?
WIKIPEDIA defined design thinking as a creative strategies
designers used during the process of designing. It also an
approach to resolve issues outside of professional design
practice, such as in business users the designer’s
sensibility and methods to match people’s needs with
what is technologically feasible and what a variable
business strategy can convert into customer value and
market opportunity.
And Tim Brown the CEO, IDEO defined design thinking as
a discipline that uses the designers sensibility and what a
variable business strategy can convert into customer value
and market opportunity.
But I see design thinking as a creative process of finding a
solution to a products, services, using design to
conceptualized and strategize to better provide a solution
to a complex problem that will benefit the customer or
client and market opportunity.
3. HOW IS DESIGN
THINKING USE?
In Tim Brown book, Change by Design, that design thinking is
firmly based on generating a holistic and emphatic
understanding of the problems that people face, and that
involves ambiguous or inherently subjective concepts such as
emotions, needs, motivations, and drive of behaviors.
Design thinking is is for everybody, and because it is
important in process of growth and development, it is a
revolutionized way of changing things and meeting the
demand of the people, their needs.
Design thinking is a problem solving approach, understand
the people and knowing what your trying to solve, and try to
find a solution to it. Design thinking allowed you to think
outside the box, identifying new ideas and how to implement
it. Three components in design thinking, people, technology,
and business strategy. As a design thinker, it important to
understand the market, the people so you know how and
what to produce, what problem to solve, it is a methodology
that provides solution to solve a problem. Design thinking is
so popular because it is used in every industry to tackled a
problem, and finding the solution to it.
4. DESIGN
THINKING
PROCESS
Since Design thinking is an environment that is conducive for growth and experimentation, a creative place where
new idea is implemented, and identifying solutions, it is broken into five process.
1- EMAPATHY – Merriam Webster Dictionary defined empathy as the action of understanding, being aware of,
being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings thoughts, and experiencing the feelings, thoughts and
experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully
communicated in an objectively explicit manner also: the capacity for this, the imaginative projection of a subjective
state into an object so that the objective appears to be infused with it.
Empathy is our ability to see the world through other people’s eye’s, to see what they see, feel what they feel, and
experience things as they do. In design thinking is as explained in IDEO’s Human-centered design Toolkit, a deep
understanding of the problems and realities of the people you are designing for.” learning about the difficulties
people face, as well as uncovering their talent needs and desires
As the first stage of design thinking process, empathy is crucial to a human-centered process, empathy helps design
thinkers to set aside his or her own assumptions about the world in order to gain insight into their users and their
needs”
Empathy is the most important process in design thinking, it helps us understand people emotions and physical
needs.
2 -DEFINE ( THE PROBLEM) – The define stage you put together great ideas to establish features, functions, and any
other elements that will allow them solve the problems or, at the very least-allow users to resolve issues themselves
with the minimum of difficulty.
You combined and analyzing all the insight and information you gathered by observing people in the first stage. The
main goal in this stage is framing the problem clearly and defining it as a problem statement, gathering ideas that
will solve the problem.
3- IDEATE – During this process, designers are ready to start generating ideas. You’ve grown to understand your
users and their needs in the empathies stage, and you’ve analyzed and sympathized your observations in the define
stage, and ended up with a human-centered problem statement. Now your beginning to think out side the box with
your team member to identify new solutions to the problem statement you’ve created, and you can start to look for
alternative ways of viewing the problem.
There are hundreds of ideation techniques such as BRAINSTORM, BRAINWRITE, WORST POSSIBLE IDEA, and
SCAMPER.
4- PROTOTYPE – This process is creating a visual representations, put ideas on paper, sketching, prototyping, of the
previous defined solutions to evaluate how beneficial they'll be for the product, creating simple draft-make sure to
adopt a practical, fast and economical approach to prototyping.
The Prototype phrase is experimental and its main goal lies in identifying the best solution possible for each of the
previously identified problems.
5. EXAMPLES OF
DESIGN
THINKING
Design thinking for social innovation
Design thinking for educators
Design thinking for mobility
Design thinking for solar energy in rural Africa
6. WAYS I CAN
USE DESIGN
THINKING
IDEO Consulting firm generated a list of mindset that business
leaders, tech startup or organization can apply through out the
design thinking process. I will use this methodology to better
understand and increase my work as I journey through the design
thinking.
Empathy – This process is the most important in design thinking, it is
fundamental to any work that occurs at a non profit. According to
the article, a Stanford .D School editor Emi Kolawale posed that, “ in
order to get to the new solutions, you have to get to know different
people, different scenario, different places.’ it is important to be
flexible, meeting people and sharing ideas together.
Creative Confidence – Ones you begin to practice empathy at work,
you’re likely to have more ideas for new project.
I will make sure I create an avenue where I interaction with people
from different background, ideology learning from them and creating
more room for creative ideas.
Iteration – Doing something over and over again, is call iterate, this is
about exercising your creative confidence, your inherent ability to do
the thing.
I will get people involved in the process, hear from them, feed back,
and working on those feed back to create something good for
customer/client
