2. This unit plan is constructed for a class of Third
Graders.
There is sixteen students
- There are eight boys and eight girls
Two of my students are twin immigrants from
Dominican Republic and are ESL students.
85% of students are White, 10% are African
American, 5% are Hispanic.
3. The third grade students will learn cultural aspects
within the generation of the 1980’s in the United
States of America. They will also learn about the
landmark presidential election of 1984. The learning
process for this unit will take place over one week.
*I will collaborate with a teacher that is fluent in
Spanish so that the two Dominican ESL students
will be able to understand. I will also sit with them
and breakdown the lesson(s) and any other
concerns.
4. I will start the day with the students with a fun game on the
computers, titled Who is That? a presidential guessing game on the
website www.funbrain.com.
I will then move into the lesson on the 1984 Presidential Election. I
will breakdown the election results, main candidates, (Ronald
Reagan & Walter Mondale) and the historical aspects' that pertain to
the election.
- The historical aspects being that it was the largest margin that any
candidate has won by in all of U.S. Presidential election history since
George Washington.
- The students will then watch this YouTube video of the results from
the night of the 1984 Presidential Election.
- For today the assessment will be a written reflection of the night of
the results.
5. The day will begin with students bring in the DVD case of their
favorite movie (Homework from Monday) and presenting it to
the class.
I will then start talk about some of the most prominent movies
of the 1980’s, such as but not limited to: Flashdance
(1983), E.T.-The Extra Terrestrial (1982),Who Framed Roger

Archives website and find and print a newspaper clipping for a
showing time for an 80’s movies discussed today.

Today there is no “Bell-Ringer” type activity.
I will discuss the how the fashion of the 1980’s was mainly based on
movies and music stars much as it is today.
- Madonna and her fashion sense will be discussed since she was a
main contributor to women’s fashion, as well as the movie
Flashdance will be visited again because it did as well.
- When it comes to Men’s Fashion, Michael Jackson will be discussed
as a major player.
The students will view a site with detailed information of the 1980’s
fashion, and will be assigned to take pictures of people, clothes, and
things they feel would make a good 80’s outfit, and make a collage
out of the pictures as homework.
7. The first thing today the students will do is present their collages
they made from Fashion Day, and critique each others.

and Michael Jackson will be revisited, also some other artists to be
mentioned are: Hall & Oates, Pat Benatar, Billy Joel, Phil

have the students voice their opinions on it.

They will first start by going on Pinterest and making a board
such as mine (http://www.pinterest.com/jgogo09/80s-toys/ ) of
pictures of 80s toys and technology.
The students will be assessed on the amount of pictures they
put on their boards. They should at least have ten pictures on
their board.
