To Whom It May Concern,
Ivan Sotelo has been working as federal work-study undergraduate student in my lab in the Botany and
Plant Sciences department at the University of California, Riverside since September 2013 and will
continue until June 2016. Apart from doing general lab work, he has been working on a project using a
Chemical Genomics approach with one of my postdocs. He has been involved in isolating DNA,
preparing PCRs, electrophoresis, gene cloning, transformation of these genes into E.coli and
Agrobacterium and finally into Arabidopsis plants, taking care of plants and tissue cultures, and analyzing
data.
During this time, Ivan learned how to work under sterile conditions, prepare media and solutions,
interpret and analyze data, present his findings at lab meetings, and became knowledgeable of general
molecular biology techniques. Ivan has been a real asset to the lab. He is dedicated and asks questions,
and is a collegial and great team player.
