Wedding Rings Are Symbols
Of Commitment
Just the mention of wedding rings, especially among
the ladies revokes sweet memories, emotions and
yearnings of mutual love, trust and affection towards
their male counterparts. They complete wedding
ceremonies and are the most important consideration
during this breathtaking event.
According to definition, these are metal rings indicating that the wearer is
married. It symbolizes that two partners have decided to come together and
devote the rest of their lives to each other and are worn on the base of the
right or left ring finger. The idea of putting them on did not just come out of
nowhere. It has its origin, traditions, and customs.
It is believed that the ring has evolved. Our ancestors accepted them as an
emblem of eternity, an indication of loyalty, dedication, and attachment of two
people of opposite genders. Their history also dates back in the ancient
Egyptians which involved the man placing the ring on the finger of the wife, a
sign showing that he had confidence in the woman in her ability to care for his
house.
2. In the ancient Greek and Romans, it was the bridegroom who gave these
pieces of ornaments to the father of the bride (it is claimed that this was for
the survival of the bride purchase practice). Another interesting story links the
Romans, who gave their wives gold rings which she only wore in public
because it was too precious to wear while doing household chores.
The Hebrews also had theirs shaped like the roof of the Jewish temple very
large and was usually kept in the synagogue only to be used during the
wedding ceremony after which it is was removed and kept back. It was
basically the property of the synagogue.
The Christians use them in marriage ceremonies and are highly valued
spiritually. According to one Bishop Durant, it is a symbol of union of hearts.
The English believe so strongly in rings that if one cannot afford a single one
during the memorable event then renting is the only option. It denotes love
between the two partners.
It has become the norm and tradition to put wedding bands on fingers of
couples during wedding ceremonies. Once placed on during this formal
procedure, a married couple declares their undying passion for each other till
death separates them. Their significance is declining at an alarming rate due to
cases of divorces in recent times. During a divorce, the ring is physically
removed from the finger, a sign that the union is no more.
