Even today, whole human history bewilders with the most erstwhile
invention of fire which was basically for producing heat. But
process proceed, we learned conversion—fire under a kettle
produced steam. Watching over the human condition through that lens,
while resources may be limited but human ingenuity so far has seemed
boundless.
Now, in a compelling way, this is the condition in which global energy
producers now find themselves. There have been years you’re hearing
about future of energy, power application’s next generation or the
upcoming future utility business model. Everyone is probably getting a
little tired of it. But indeed something is changing all around us that might
not come to your notice. It is the development in the way we control,
design, operate and maintain energy plants — at outset using those tiny
rooftop PV arrays to now going with the most remote, biggest, offshore
wind farms: everything is turning digital.
Digitalization has come up all on a different level, where hardware is
experiencing a brain so as to easily fetch the data, analyze it, and compile
the decisions without any human intrusion.
Softwares are playing an important role in the lives of energy stakeholders.
Companies in an urge to get better working hard towards making power
plants smarter with installing cloud-connected sensors. Mergers of solar
with storage technologies is getting higher to reduce annual peaks in
microgrids.
It’s no secret that bluer oil prices and upcoming scenario where fossil fuels
are diminished, is encouraging a serious rethinking to energy companies.
Some governments are attempting to switch vehicles that use combustion
engines with electric vehicles, thereby easily cutting oil demand and
emissions. With this huge step, concerns about local air pollution and
climate change, some or all will get justified.
Talking about energy, India is remaining true to its determined renewable
energy targets, which could be observed with the deduced data, which as of
April 2017 account for 17.5 percent of the total energy source. This is
remarkable growth in renewable energy installations in India. India also
aims for reaching 170 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022, out of
which 100 GW is to come from solar.
Evident for a while, solar and wind stand poised to reform energy markets.
And world is taking a transition from a hydrocarbon-dominated system to
one where renewables started to shape influential market share, enthusiast
players in energy will definitely leverage all present technologies —from
established to upstart.

UL – South Asia
COVER STORY
As a global leader in the
testing, inspection and
certification (TIC) industry
with a rich legacy of 123 years, UL
sets global benchmarks for safety,
quality and performance of products
spanning a wide range of industries.
UL’s internationally renowned
authority in safety science has enabled
its expansion to over a hundred
countries worldwide. This reflects in its
now two decades long presence in
India.
UL in India is driven by the company’s
mission to make the world a safer,
more secure and sustainable place. The
company has worked relentlessly to
craft and deliver on an ‘In India for
India’ strategy; and has executed this
ambitious plan through significant
investment in building world class
testing and engineering capabilities as
well as developing bespoke solutions
for addressing needs of manufacturers
within the country. UL also has long
standing relationships with the
Government of India, and with leading
academic institutions, with whom it
undertakes pioneering research in
topics such as solar energy and fire
safety.
In more ways than one, UL’s growth in
India mirrors the changing policy
landscape in the country. While India
still has a long way to go to compete
globally and improve quality and
safety standards to match those of
mature economies around the world,
there has definitely been rapid progress
in this regard over the past few years.
It is heartening that the government
and manufacturing communities are
recognizing the importance of
establishing safety and quality
standards for the domestic market as
well, rather than just focusing on the
exports.
Through the Looking Glass – A
History of UL
UL was founded in 1894 by William
Henry Merrill, a 25 year old American
electric engineer, who was
commissioned by insurers to examine
the safety of the electrical wiring in the
‘Palace of Electricity’, an exhibit at the
World Columbian Exposition in
Chicago that was held to mark 400
years of Christopher Columbus’s
discovery of the Americas.
Sensing the need for electrical safety
and the market potential that electricity
driven technology posed, Merrill’s
landmark experience at the World
Columbian Exposition prompted him
to form the Underwriters Electrical
Bureau as an ode to his service as an
insurance underwriter. The
Underwriters Electrical Bureau was
then renamed as Underwriters
Laboratories in 1903. Merrill soon
began the process of evaluating

“ “
hazards and launched tests to set safety
standards. UL published its first
standard, “Tin Clad Fire Doors,” in
1903. The following year, the UL Mark
made its debut with the labeling of a
fire extinguisher. In 1905, the
organization established a Label
Service for certain product categories
that require more frequent inspections.
UL inspectors conducted the first
factory inspections on labeled products
at manufacturers’ facilities, a
pioneering practice that defined the
crux of UL’s services.
Since Merrill’s time, UL has expanded
into an organization with 64
Laboratories, 160 testing and
certification facilities serving
customers in 104 countries. It has over
13,000 safety professionals spanning
over 50 countries around the world.
And it has expanded into various
service verticals – serving the
traditional fire & electrical equipment
manufacturers to lighting & HVAC
products, medical devices, high
performance materials (e.g. plastics &
composites), consumer technology
products, consumer products (such as
textiles, jewelry, toys, chemicals) to
financial, transaction & cyber security
– all with a singular mission: ensuring
safe, secure and sustainable living and
working environments.
How UL is Helping India in its Clean
Energy Mission
As solar and wind energy technologies
become more prominent in the energy
mix globally, UL has developed an
advanced suite of end-to-end services
to address the safety, quality and
performance issues of these
technologies. It works with
manufacturers, developers and utilities
in minimizing risks and facilitating
growth in their renewable energy
investments. UL’s services cover many
areas in project development for
planning and engineering, construction
and commissioning, and operations
and maintenance.
UL India can hence help the Indian
renewable energy sector adapt to the
highest standards. The company’s
laboratory at Bangalore was first
private laboratory in India accredited
to test MNRE requirements for PV
components and systems. To support
the wind industry, it provides on-site
technical support that deliver quick,
reliable results and reduced time-to-
market, apart from offering safety,
performance and function testing
services for the assessment of wind
turbines and wind turbine components.
This has been possible through a
couple of acquisitions (DEWI and
AWS Truepower) – that UL did
globally – and integrated locally. UL
ensures that all these services provided
comply with regional, national and
international regulations and standards,
and also meet the needs of insurers,
developers and investors.
Apart from bringing its global
experience in the the renewable energy
space to support the solar and wind
energy sectors in India, UL has also
taken a lead in identifying and offering
solutions to demands that arise as
green energy gains further ground in
the country. Some of these areas
include:
• Standards development
Through its participation in
technical committees, UL engages
with the MNRE and allied bodies
like the SECI, NISE and NIWE
experience to devise a robust
country-specific standards and
conformity assessment framework.
In the energy industry, one of the
biggest challenges until recently
for UL was working in a sector
that did not define minimum
requirements to evaluate and
assess the quality, performance
and operational efficiency of
equipment and installations as a
whole. A worrying factor that UL
observed was that there was a gap
in understanding the long term
implications of renewable
investment – ultimately, for the
clean energy program to succeed,
it is not the amount of installations
that matter but the quality of
power output. Through various
engagements with stakeholders,
the company has consistently
articulated these challenges and
provided solutions to overcome
them. UL believes that the
recently announced move toward
greater quality control in the solar
sector is a welcome one.
• Supporting agriculture through
adoption of solar pumps
By circumventing the need for
either electricity or fossil fuels
like diesel to run irrigation pumps
for the fields, solar based water pumps
are a boon to farmers in the remote
areas the country and are emerging as
an important tool to invigorate the
agricultural sector. UL has played a
critical role in the large scale
adoption of solar water pumping
systems in India by helping to
ensure that only the systems that
meet the quality and performance
criteria as defined in MNRE
specifications are qualified to be
installed in the country. UL’s state
of the art Solar Pump testing
facility in Bangalore is capable
of testing PV Modules, Pump
Controllers and the pump
assembly as a complete
system.
• Creating energy
infrastructure for
smart cities
Smart meters -
With over 200
million smart
meters installed
either in
operational or
pilot processes
in India,
consumer
concerns about
potential safety &
performance hazards
associated with smart
meters are increasing.
Various utilities seeking to
install energy meters, request the
suppliers to submit type test
reports from a BIS-accredited
laboratory to ascertain compliance
with the national standards of
safety, accuracy and
communications protocol.
Identifying this need, UL in India
has made an investment in a
comprehensive testing facility
dedicated to smart meters.
Through the testing facility, UL
will cater to the growing needs of
certification in the advanced
metering industry. UL in India
intends to provide safety research
and advisory services to key
stakeholders, including utilities,
regulators and non-utility users of
smart meters.
Smart Grids - As an ever-
increasing number of products
and systems become
interconnected, the need to verify
interoperability between them
prior to installation and use is a
critical cost and time saver. UL
provides testing and certification
services for smart grid product
and system interoperability,
performance and security.
Exploring the Indian Energy Market
with Innovation
In the renewables sector in India, UL is
currently focused on driving multi-
stakeholder effort to develop Indian
standards for energy storage systems
and support the burgeoning market for
composite materials through its
extensive suite of testing, certification
and advisory services. To attain
international repute and be sustainable
in the long run, advanced
manufacturing capabilities in
expensive sectors like clean energy

programs, and this is what UL is
striving to provide in India.
The UL 2900, launched in 2016 is an
all-encompassing standard series to
assess cyber security of network
connected devices. Considering the
ambitious Smart Cities Mission and the
movement toward creating a digital
economy, cyber security is becoming a
priority area and UL is eager to lend its
experience to devise standards and
deliver solutions that are relevant to
India.
Living the Public Safety Mission
As a company built on the core
philosophy of promoting safety for all,
UL’s operations transcend business
undertakings to encapsulate varied
Not-For-Profit efforts. In India, the
body of work under its NFP
programme to advance public safety
touches critical areas of road safety,
fire safety and access to clean water.
Through collaborations with premier
educational institutions, government
agencies, industry bodies and other non
profits, UL has, over the past few
years, contributed profoundly to the
understanding of fire hazards in India
and ways to combat them. A prime
example of this is the first of its kind
fire façade test at IIT Gandhinagar to
study the impact of fire on glass façade
buildings. The National Fire Safety
Council, which UL has been hosting
over the past decade, brings several
government and private stakeholders
together to deliberate on improving fire
safety mechanisms in the country.
In the road safety space, UL is
dedicated to grooming youth to
become safety ambassadors of
tomorrow. A pioneering effort in this
area is the enlightening, multipart
safety quiz competition called ‘The
National Safety Science Quiz’ that is
conducted in partnership with NDTV.
UL’s safety education efforts are
expected to reach more than 55,000
students from over 750 schools across
10 cities in India.
Through, its on-going partnership with
the Safe Water Network that began in
2012, UL provides grants and audits
services that enable affordable and
reliable access to clean water, thereby
empowering communities to own and
manage safe water systems. To-date,
this crucial collaboration has brought
clean to more than 600,000 people in
rural Indian villages.
UL’s vision for the Future
As India gallops into the digital arena
with increased adoption of mobile
telephony and internet access, UL will
strive hard to create a safe digital
ecosystem to ensure the safety and
security of interconnected systems that
span electricity grids to digital
transactions.
Over the next few years, UL is also
dedicated to work actively in changing
the safety culture in the country by
making ordinary consumers more
safety conscious. While UL works
primarily in the B2B space, it also
wants to deepen its involvement in
promoting safety awareness. After all,
the products that they validate touch
consumers lives directly and an
increase in safety consciousness will
lead to a ‘demand push’ scenario where
consumers influence the acceleration of
safety and quality legislations.
Steering the Success of UL in India
Suresh Sugavanam, Vice President
and Managing Director of UL South
Asia is steering the company’s growth
in India since 2013.
Having worked in high profile roles in
global conglomerates like Suzlon,

In line with the government’s objective towards promoting
renewable energy, Tata Power has a well-defined growth
plan and is pursuing actions towards achieving the same.
The Company aims to build a total capacity of 20,000 MW
by 2025. We are working towards achieving this target and,
in FY17, we have added about 1400 MW of capacity with
various projects in pipeline. For the next 3 years, the
company has sketched out a well-defined plan to shape up
its balance sheet, and is pursuing actions towards achieving
the same. We wish to increase our solar & wind businesses
significantly over a period of time; as the government is
expected to bid out large scale projects to meet its target.
We are exploring multiple options, both Greenfield and
acquisitions, to be able to capture the market for Solar,
Wind, and hydro based generation. The Company is also in
the process of acquiring suitable land parcels in various
states to support development of solar and wind projects.
6) Finally, can you brief us about your most
successfully incorporated strategy, in terms of energy
production and distribution, currently in the market?
In terms of energy production, a quick ramp up of non-
fossil fuel capacity to 30% of portfolio has been a
successful strategy. In distribution, turnaround of ailing
state-owned enterprise in Delhi has been a well-executed
strategy. Tata Power has recently signed a joint venture
between Tata Power and the Government of NCT of Delhi
with the majority stake being held by Tata Power Company
(51%). The company started operations on July 1, 2002 post
the unbundling of the erstwhile Delhi Vidyut Board (DVB)
and has been the frontrunner in implementing power
distribution reforms in the capital city and is acknowledged
for its consumer-friendly practices. Since privatization, the
Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses in Tata
Power-DDL areas have shown a record decline. Today,
AT&C losses stand at 8.59%, which is an unprecedented
reduction of around 84% from an opening loss level of 53%
in July 2002.
Tata Power has recently signed a Distribution Franchisee
Agreement (DFA) with Ajmer Vidyut Vitran Nigam
Limited (AVVNL) to cater to the power requirements of
customers in Ajmer by replicating this success story of
Delhi.

Furthermore, in the energy sector, new

challenges. With so many regulations

adapting to it is easier and faster.
Future Endeavor
Future plans of EsyaSoft is to provide
a cloud based platform and it also aims
to furnish ready to use, cost effective
digitized solutions, so that data center
set ups and other hardware costs can be

an impact in the Indian Electricity
sector.
Pushing Beyond the Boundaries
Challenges and hurdles are present in
every business, but for EsyaSoft, the
main challenge was to convince the
customers about the Product, because
the energy sector plays a vital role in
the operation of large companies like
Oracle, Landis plus Gyr, Itron, GE,
Siemens and it is filled with people
having domain and industry expertise
who are also very comfortable with the
legacy systems. Thus, it was difficult
for EsyaSoft to ensure customers about
their products as they were new in this
domain and the team size was too
small, and on the other hand, the
competitors they had were big players
of the domain.

uman-made satellites like the International Space
HStation, have long been able to utilize the solar
energy that affects from the sun, getting that
power back to Earth where people can use it.
The Japanese breakthrough gives the hope that humans will
one day be able to use an inexhaustible source of energy in
space.
‘Breakthrough in wireless energy transmission’, What does
this mean exactly? It’s that humanity which has now
officially begun to realize one of the most aspiring thought
th
experiments of the 20 century – The Dyson Sphere.
Japan is struggling to expand its scientific opportunities.
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has
contributed to this major scientific achievement. With the
use of microwaves, JAXA’s researchers were able to
transmit 1.8 kilowatts of energy through the air to a receiver
170 feet away. There are no wires, no cables, no pipelines,
no trains, no trucks, no nothing. Just Energy. Through the
air. Granted, it is not a lot of energy –1.8 kW is about
sufficient to run an electric kettle, according to the reports.
“This was the first time someone has managed to send a
high output of nearly 2 kilowatts of electric power through
microwaves to a small target, with the use of a delicate
directivity control device,” as per JAXA researches. Today,
they can get into what this wireless energy transmitted is
for- JAXA has been investing on a system that would use
solar-powered satellites to transmit energy directly to the
Earth.
This Space Solar Power System would define that solar
power would be available anywhere on the earth, at any
time of day, regardless of whether or there is no sunlight on
the planet. JAXA’s ideal goal is to set up solar panels and
antennae nearby 22,300 miles from the Earth, which could

take various decades to practically realize. JAXA has
evaluated that the system would probably not be ready until
2040 and they even haven’t find out how to achieve the
large structure they need into space, or how to develop it, or
how to maintain it.
Hats off to all those Scientists! Just imagine the power of
this innovation. When a great theoretical physicist and
mathematician Freeman Dyson look through the science
fiction novel Star Maker, he was truly inspired to propose
what has become called as the Dyson Sphere, which is a
wide range of solar panels that enclose the sun and beam
energy back to the Earth. Considering JAXA continues to
improve this technology, and assuming it looks a major
investment from the right parties, at the end of this modern
era we could have access to a renewable, sustainable source
of energy.

“Real estate has been considered as
the most sought of investment as per
the Indian investor’s psyche.” Like
any other market, Real Estate sector
also has its highs and lows. Although
investors have minted money during
the boom period of 2002-2013, they
also have seen the declining phase of
the market between 1994-2002 when
the properties were sold at half their
peak price. Expecting similar returns in
nascent markets might be possible, but
it won't be fair to expect the same kind
of return in developed markets.
Lack of Buyer’s Interest
The bear phase of the market has
directly touched the sentiments of
investors and people are not very keen
on buying the property looking at the
unclear future picture of few of the
projects. The sector carries a baggage
due to ignorance and opaque regulation
which needs to be settled to improve
market sentiments. Decline in a
number of buyers for residential
projects can be witnessed clearly due
to the lack of appropriate pricing,
which is found as high as compared to
the average income of investors and
rental aspects of the property. This is
one major factor that has impacted the
level of demand for end users as well
as the investors.
Buying Opportunity
A boom in the Real Estate market is
expected with GDP is moving to 7.5-
8% per annum. Moreover, the current
government has also tried to bring
clarity to both buyer and developer in
the form of a real estate regulator bill
which makes real estate investment
more lucrative and regulated
investment option.
Due to the correction phase in real
estate sector and rupee depreciation,
investors can find properties being sold
at half the price of their peak value.
Although the cost of construction has
risen over the past few years and the
compliance cost is also expected to go
up in view of introduction to Real
Estate regulators, buyer’s can still find
properties which are sold at a cheaper
price due to rupee depreciation and
large unsold inventories.
The approach in the current market
scenario should be to invest under
construction residential properties
rather than the constructed ones, in
view of the discounted price of the
former as compared to the latter one.
This is the time when investors should
search for best possible options in
terms of the legality of project,
location, pricing and rental/future
aspects in order to enjoy the best out of
the market.

Think Before You Buy
Although, we can find properties with
a lot of freebees and payment options
similar to SIP, we also need to look at
the details of the property with respect
to location, track record of the
developer, papers, and approvals in
line with new regulations. A suggestion
would be to buy sensibly rather than
being lured by the lucrative buying
options. After all, it is not only about
the packaging but the quality of the
item being bought.
Over-leveraging in the current market
scenario is a clear no-no, which means
people should only invest the money
which is surplus and ready for
investment rather than being lured by
the market. Investors in the past have
invested out of the pocket while being
caught by lucrative marketing activities
and in turn have burnt their hands
when it came to paying the cost of the
project during the market slowdown.
Investors should take calculative
advantage of the current turmoil in
the residential market, instead of
avoiding it.

E
ngineering is
the greatest award bestowed on
humans. An engineer is a person who designs which works with as few creative, innovative, and imaginative ideas as
possible. They have vision which require guts as no construction and not even a story is created without it. Be a bridge, dam,
building, all of them which should suffice to make known the splendor and brilliance of a nation and they should be robust
enough to be conserved for maximum years possible, and even if it’s susceptible to change the basic structure would remain
as it is.
Engineering always involves the advancement of technology and it is an art where designs and construction being done with
proper organization. Like that, Engineers created Hydraulic Structure which is partially or fully submerged structure which
multi-tasks, that can be used to divert, stop, restrict or manage the natural flow of water. The materials required to construct
can range from large rock and concrete to obscure items. Hydraulic structures amplify conservation practices where
vegetation and constructed channels are not competent to do the job.
The selection of the most suitable and economical kind of structure to use in a specific situation will depend on the hydraulic
parameters of the site which is Discharge and Controlled head.
Hydraulics Structures getting Better
In engineering, things got advanced, machines and their component parts have become stronger, lighter, cheaper and

productive. Component operating pressures have raised, design
like seal and hose has improved the way additive and filtration
technology boosted. Better the materials and manufacturing
techniques, efficient the hydraulic components with high power
densities.
General Electric has planned to launch a four turbine project, which
is going to store energy from the blades of the turbine to gather water
which could generate hydroelectric power which will be first instance
of combining two energies to provide reliable sustainable energy.
Higher operating pressures and closer tolerances are the factors that
leads to hydraulic machine more vulnerable to wear and damage
ensuing from oil contamination and inadequate lubrication. This
leads to the importance of proactive maintenance. The things to
focus on may vary:
Oil Life is the issue that must be talked of as at 110°C and
above for extended periods will turn into black as ink and
smell unmentionable, it emerges the need of hotter oil as it
will rapid the speed of reactions exponentially.
Oil viscosity is the important element for both adequate
lubrication and proficient power transmission.
Seal and hose life, the standard of elastomers used to create
hydraulic seals and hoses are also getting raised.
Types of Hydraulic Structures
A dam is a Hydraulic Structure which holds the water in a reservoir as
potential energy, like a weir is a type of hydraulic structure which can be
utilized to pool water for irrigation, establish grade control or as a new way to divert
the flow away from eroding banks, they are again sub-divided into Gravity Dam, Earth Dam, Rockfill Dam, Weir Dam,
Barrage, Arch, Buttress Dam. In that, some are used for storage and some for diversion purpose.
Factors Affecting Site Selection
Topography could be one of the most important factors as a narrow site will reduce the amount of material required in the
dam which will reduce the cost to invest in. Faults and shears should be not present in the foundation of the dam. This
makes a requirement for the better and expensive foundation which is leads to another factor Geology. Another element to
be inculcated is Appurtenant as the cost of these structures is not high than the cost of the dam, economy in design could be
achieved by considering their consequence at the time of site selection. Site should be chosen where proper water supply,
disposal, electric power should be available while construction is under process, so Local Condition is too crucial. Easy
excess to all these factors will be a great relief for the contractors and engineers.
Pursuit and Purpose of Dams
Various aims could be there to construct a dam, be it the production of electricity; water storage for irrigation or human
consumption; flood management; and also navigation and recreation. With the dam, majorly production of Hydroelectricity
is done which offers a great advantage in electric networks to adapt the power supply to quickest changes in power demand.
A huge crowd surrounds the area which is exposed to the flood, the usage of dams for flood control should be raised.
Experts advise dams shall be built for the sake of unpredictable weather conditions from drought condition to heavy rainfalls
and that will also ensure the stability of power grids as large dams are good at storing energy.

he entire human history and
Tanthropology is full of
evidences as to how intelligent
human beings have given rise to new
technology and how they utilized that
new technology to further our chances
of survival. The technological
development has reached such a phase
now where human survival is
something which is taken for granted.
The enormous size of human
population is a testimony to that fact. If
it wasn’t for the newer drugs and
equipments and procedures we would
have still been dying of minor diseases
like diarrhea. This is just one example
as to how deep an impact the new
inventions and technological
developments have had on human life

Technology, of its own accord, cannot
reach the millions and millions of
human beings. It needs some assistance
from another aspect of human
interaction i.e. Economy. In today’s

in hand. The Market forces have been
instrumental in the spread of newer
technologies to the grass roots. The
combination of these two factors has
had a humongous impact on our

But this wasn’t the case if you travel

current phase of technological and
economical development could be
traced back to the period which is
famously known as’ Industrial

single word to describe them. Honestly
speaking the rest of the world is still
catching up with them.
So where does India stand in all of
this? We are a developing country and
currently among the emerging
economies of the world. The tag of
“Developing country” means we are
among those who are still catching up
with the developed world. But the tag
of ‘Emerging Economy’ gives that
much of a positive outlook about our
future prospects.
Now keeping this larger picture in
mind we can now discuss as to how
Indian entrepreneurs can make it big in
the Global arena. Last year was hailed
as a year of Start-ups for India. With
the change of political guard and a new
found optimism of “Achchhe Din”
young Indians have indeed come
forward with their skills and courage in
the business arena. It would be a bit
too early to reach a judgement about
the viability and success that these
start-ups will have in the long run. We
need to give them some time before
they can establish themselves in the
market, domestic as well as global!
However there is this undeniable trend
among these start-ups that not many
among them are based on Inventions or
something Substantially New. What I
mean by ‘Substantially New’ is
something which can have a Global
impact. Something which might
fundamentally change the way we do
things. The period of Industrial
Revolution is abound with such
examples. For example Telephone
completely changed the way we
communicate with people. And if
telephone seems to be an example from
the distant past then we can consider
Internet and Mobile technology which
has further fundamentally changed the
way we do things. None of the Start-
ups that have come up in the last year
in India show such a promise.
Unfortunately most of our Start-ups are
kind of Imitation ventures. For
example online shopping websites like
Flipkart, Snapdeal. They are the ideal
representatives of the Indian start-ups
although they are more than a few
years old now. There are limitations to
such ventures because as soon as
domestic market is opened up to
similar players in the global arena (e.g.
Amazon) there is always a chance that
our smaller fishes will be swallowed up
by the bigger ones.
To be fare to our young generation of
entrepreneurs they do have all the skill
sets and leadership qualities to make a
huge impact in the global arena. Our
young minds are fed with the same
knowledge about how to run a business
as do those in the West. Our business
schools are imparting quality
knowledge to its students which can
help them become great business
persons of the future. So problem of
Indian Start-ups does not lie in the
qualities that the individual
entrepreneurs possess but in lack of an
organized effort at a national level to
do well in the extremely competitive
global economy.
An organized effort at national level
means a synchronized, complementary
and harmonious movement of the
major players in the country’s
economy i.e. the Political will,
Research and Development efforts and
the Market forces. Research and
Development should give our young
creative minds enough incentives to
explore and come up with new
inventions rather than make do with
'The Jugad’ method which is a
buzzword of today’s young generation.
These new technological inventions
will then require the assistance of
market forces in order to penetrate the
grass roots of our domestic as well as
global market. The abundance of
political will in last couple of years has
been a major advantage that the young
entrepreneurs can make the most of.
In absence of this organized effort our
Indian start ups are facing competition
from an organized research and
development industry of the Western
world which is well supplied with
finances from the transnational private
players which are hungry for more and
more profits. The already established
industrial giants have the capacity to
eat our young start ups in absence of
new inventions. No matter how good
the managerial skills and leadership
qualities the individual might have,
there are limits to what they can do
alone.
This opinion may smell of an IP
professionals bias towards Research
and Development but if we turn some
pages of history then this bias might
well be justified.

Information Technology is
redesigning & revamping the
Energy & Utility (E&U) sector in
every aspect. The world is
transforming power sources to green,
renewable energy radicals and is
implementing complex demanding
management methods. IT is working as
a catalyst & a critical engine in the
transitions, whether implementing
Advanced Metering Infrastructure
(AMI) solutions, addressing the
customer management environment, or
managing other key areas in power
generation, distribution and customer
services stratum.
The catalyst is contributing in the
energy sector through the dedicated
combination of both software &
hardware designed in conjunction with
the energy industry. The energy sector
has implemented Internet of Things
(IoT) to change the way we consume,
generate, transmit and distribute energy
in the connected era. The Present
connected energy market, which
includes applications related to the
generation and transportation of
electrical energy, micro-generation,
smart grid and distribution monitoring
and smart metering, is estimated to be
worth around USD$11.7 billion. This
huge investment and potential market
conditions have driven the
development of the “Smart Grid,” and
further technological developments
have made it more practical. The smart
grid is an electricity generation,
transmission and distribution network
enhanced by automated (digital)
controls, auditing and
telecommunications capabilities. It has
enabled automated, bidirectional flow
of information while providing
real-time, two-way flow of electrical
energy. Consequently, the stakeholders
involved in the electricity chain–from
generation plant to dwelling, industrial
and commercial users–gain insight of
both electrical power flow and the
infrastructure transporting it.
Existing infrastructure is becoming
smarter with the deployment of new
digital equipment and smart devices.
This new intelligence is connecting all

FUTURE INSIGHTS
electrical assets and forming a smart
world of complex equipment which
can be described as an ‘Internet of
Watts’ – but which is, in fact, an
example of the Internet of Things (IoT)
in action. The IoT has helped in
establishing internet connectivity with
energy producing plants, equipment
and devices. IoT is also connecting
these devices to intelligent networks
and using data analytics to extract
meaningful and actionable insights
from devices. In the context of the
smart grid technology, this means
allocating computing intelligence
throughout the infrastructure. Smart
grid provides a wide range of
operations which start with embedded
sensors used in wind turbine vanes that
control its pitch, rotation & function in
real-time response to changing wind
conditions, to sub-station control
systems that respond promptly to
events and minimizes production
downtime primarily occurs due to
network disturbances.in both cases.
However, the real vision/beauty of
Internet of Things (IoT) is that it
develops spaces or opportunities to
realize the potential of data gathered
through the cloud that resides in
existing un-interfaced infrastructures,
using data analysis to extract insight
and intelligence from smart devices.
After data compilation from every
aspect of the electricity supply chain,
system engineers can implement
simulation models, powerful analytics
and what-if scenarios to create precise
predictions about grid status &
associated conditions. Possibilities
associated with predictive analytics
and its transition operation from
reactive to proactive are the defining
and most important features of a smart
grid. It enables electrical companies
and grid system operators to utilize
smart grid technology in:
Trimming Capital Expenses
With the advent of IoT in smart grid, a
precise match between demand and
supply across the grid becomes
possible. The companies associated
with electricity generation become able
to meet peak demand without
redundant generation of electricity and
at the same time can also trace efficient
distribution paths, minimizing
transmission costs and ensuring
optimum asset operation.
Call-for Management
Deeper insight into consumption
arrangement in combination with smart
grids predictive ability allows
implementation of the large number of
energy conservation initiatives,
including demand-response, time-of-
day usage fees and dynamic pricing.
Smart grids are maintaining a proper
balance between demand & supply and
minimize the wastage caused by over-
provisioning by base or peak load.
Higher Renewable Capability
Renewable energy, whether generated
from onshore or offshore, can be
incorporated into the energy mix.
Services can interact effectively to

intermittency through the industrial-
scale renewable plant as well as with
small-scale distributed generation
while ensuring the security of
continuous supply.
Decrease in Maintenance Costs
Having a deeper look into the activity
of various processes involved in
electricity generation, transmission and
asset distribution enables
implementation of rapid processes used
while diagnosing remote faults,
minimizes the need of frequent site
visits and enable high predictive
maintenance for more efficient
technical support provided by
engineering teams on areas of greatest
need.
Comply with Regulations
By having greater the inclination
towards the use of renewable energy,
supporting more efficient methods of
energy generation, transmission,
distribution and aiding more efficient
ways for lesser consumption;
digitalization of electricity and utility
companies can meet regulatory
obligations along with reducing carbon
emissions. Implementation of smart
grids in the electrical industry can help
in the emission reduction to 20 percent
below the 1990 levels by the year
2020, to 54-68 percent below 1990
levels by 2030, and to nearly 100
percent below 2020 levels by 2050.
Augment User Engagement
Competition inside the deregulated
markets and energy savings targets of
certain regulated markets can be
overcome through the implementation
of smart grids. Electrical companies
are using the smart grids as a solution
in developing an accurate picture of
customers’ usage patterns to develop
more sophisticated & tailored products
and service offerings.
The smart grid technology is helping
electrical companies in developing
capabilities to proffer tomorrow’s
technology solutions in the E&U
domain. However, there is still a huge
runway for growth. Smart grid
technology can enormously encourage
operators to act now to capitalize this
clear market opportunity with the
development in the IoT.

WEATHERIZATION
PROGRAM
- NEED, INSIGHT,
AND IMPLEMENTATION
| NOVEMBER 201742
Insights into Weatherization
procedure
Typically following steps are taken:
Step1: In the Weatherization process
home’s audit is done. The auditor
keeps focus on to check:
• Areas like windows, pipes, wiring
that penetrate ceiling and floor,
doors, sealing cracks, etc., for high-
potential heat loss.
• Light fixtures near attic space
• heat loss due to air-duct
• dampers of the exhaust fans
• pipe condition
• wall, floor, and ceilings condition
• door and window sealings
• and more
An auditor then proposes the changes
which can make home more energy
efficient.
Step2: Utility companies call for a bid
to implement changes from its
qualified contractor network.
Step3: A selected contractor
implements changes in the home.
Step4: Utility company asks its
inspector to validate the changes
incorporated in the home.
Step5: Once the inspector approves the
changes then the Utility company pays
to the contractor.
The normal flow mentioned above
might need to adjust to handle cases
where low-earning families are not
meeting income, age, earnings, etc
criteria.
Implementation of the
Weatherization Program
While implementing the solution, we
considered a list of actors. These are:
• Administrator
• Customer
• Auditor
• Inspector
• Contractor
These actors are using the web-based
portal and mobile application. The
web-based application is developed on
the Windows platform. The mobile
application is developed using
Xamarin.
The web-based portal works under the
contemporary browsers. The mobile
application works on iOS and Android.
Summary
The solution is designed and developed
mainly for the US residential market.
However, the author believes the
similar need does exist in all markets
including India.
or energy saving, a
FWeatherization program is
quite common to implemented
by the Utility companies in the western
part of the world. The program is
mainly run for the low-earning
families. This article emphasize on
IWORKTECH’s experience on
building a platform for the US-based
company.
What is weatherization?
As per Wiki, Weatherization
(American English) or weatherproofing
(British English) is the practice of
protecting a building and its interior
from the elements, particularly from
sunlight, precipitation, and wind, and
of modifying a building to reduce
energy consumption and optimize
energy efficiency.
Why the weatherization needed?
One thinks that if my house is well
insulated than I am good as far as the
heat protection of the home is a
concern. It is true that various types of
insulation can block drafts of the cold
winds and protect the home. It gives
protection from the “Conductive” heat
flow.
We still need weatherization to protect.
It primarily reduces “Convective” heat
flow.

  • 4. Even today, whole human history bewilders with the most erstwhile invention of fire which was basically for producing heat. But process proceed, we learned conversion—fire under a kettle produced steam. Watching over the human condition through that lens, while resources may be limited but human ingenuity so far has seemed boundless. Now, in a compelling way, this is the condition in which global energy producers now find themselves. There have been years you’re hearing about future of energy, power application’s next generation or the upcoming future utility business model. Everyone is probably getting a little tired of it. But indeed something is changing all around us that might not come to your notice. It is the development in the way we control, design, operate and maintain energy plants — at outset using those tiny rooftop PV arrays to now going with the most remote, biggest, offshore wind farms: everything is turning digital. Digitalization has come up all on a different level, where hardware is experiencing a brain so as to easily fetch the data, analyze it, and compile the decisions without any human intrusion. Softwares are playing an important role in the lives of energy stakeholders. Companies in an urge to get better working hard towards making power plants smarter with installing cloud-connected sensors. Mergers of solar with storage technologies is getting higher to reduce annual peaks in microgrids. It’s no secret that bluer oil prices and upcoming scenario where fossil fuels are diminished, is encouraging a serious rethinking to energy companies. Some governments are attempting to switch vehicles that use combustion engines with electric vehicles, thereby easily cutting oil demand and emissions. With this huge step, concerns about local air pollution and climate change, some or all will get justified. Talking about energy, India is remaining true to its determined renewable energy targets, which could be observed with the deduced data, which as of April 2017 account for 17.5 percent of the total energy source. This is remarkable growth in renewable energy installations in India. India also aims for reaching 170 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022, out of which 100 GW is to come from solar. Evident for a while, solar and wind stand poised to reform energy markets. And world is taking a transition from a hydrocarbon-dominated system to one where renewables started to shape influential market share, enthusiast players in energy will definitely leverage all present technologies —from established to upstart. • 12. As a global leader in the testing, inspection and certification (TIC) industry with a rich legacy of 123 years, UL sets global benchmarks for safety, quality and performance of products spanning a wide range of industries. UL’s internationally renowned authority in safety science has enabled its expansion to over a hundred countries worldwide. This reflects in its now two decades long presence in India. UL in India is driven by the company’s mission to make the world a safer, more secure and sustainable place. The company has worked relentlessly to craft and deliver on an ‘In India for India’ strategy; and has executed this ambitious plan through significant investment in building world class testing and engineering capabilities as well as developing bespoke solutions for addressing needs of manufacturers within the country. UL also has long standing relationships with the Government of India, and with leading academic institutions, with whom it undertakes pioneering research in topics such as solar energy and fire safety. In more ways than one, UL’s growth in India mirrors the changing policy landscape in the country. While India still has a long way to go to compete globally and improve quality and safety standards to match those of mature economies around the world, there has definitely been rapid progress in this regard over the past few years. It is heartening that the government and manufacturing communities are recognizing the importance of establishing safety and quality standards for the domestic market as well, rather than just focusing on the exports. Through the Looking Glass – A History of UL UL was founded in 1894 by William Henry Merrill, a 25 year old American electric engineer, who was commissioned by insurers to examine the safety of the electrical wiring in the ‘Palace of Electricity’, an exhibit at the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago that was held to mark 400 years of Christopher Columbus’s discovery of the Americas. Sensing the need for electrical safety and the market potential that electricity driven technology posed, Merrill’s landmark experience at the World Columbian Exposition prompted him to form the Underwriters Electrical Bureau as an ode to his service as an insurance underwriter. The Underwriters Electrical Bureau was then renamed as Underwriters Laboratories in 1903. Merrill soon began the process of evaluating WORKING for a Safer, Secure & Sustainable WORLD “ “
  • 13. hazards and launched tests to set safety standards. UL published its first standard, “Tin Clad Fire Doors,” in 1903. The following year, the UL Mark made its debut with the labeling of a fire extinguisher. In 1905, the organization established a Label Service for certain product categories that require more frequent inspections. UL inspectors conducted the first factory inspections on labeled products at manufacturers’ facilities, a pioneering practice that defined the crux of UL’s services. Since Merrill’s time, UL has expanded into an organization with 64 Laboratories, 160 testing and certification facilities serving customers in 104 countries. It has over 13,000 safety professionals spanning over 50 countries around the world. And it has expanded into various service verticals – serving the traditional fire & electrical equipment manufacturers to lighting & HVAC products, medical devices, high performance materials (e.g. plastics & composites), consumer technology products, consumer products (such as textiles, jewelry, toys, chemicals) to financial, transaction & cyber security – all with a singular mission: ensuring safe, secure and sustainable living and working environments. How UL is Helping India in its Clean Energy Mission As solar and wind energy technologies become more prominent in the energy mix globally, UL has developed an advanced suite of end-to-end services to address the safety, quality and performance issues of these technologies. It works with manufacturers, developers and utilities in minimizing risks and facilitating growth in their renewable energy investments. UL’s services cover many areas in project development for planning and engineering, construction and commissioning, and operations and maintenance. UL India can hence help the Indian renewable energy sector adapt to the highest standards. The company’s laboratory at Bangalore was first private laboratory in India accredited to test MNRE requirements for PV components and systems. To support the wind industry, it provides on-site technical support that deliver quick, reliable results and reduced time-to- market, apart from offering safety, performance and function testing services for the assessment of wind turbines and wind turbine components. This has been possible through a couple of acquisitions (DEWI and AWS Truepower) – that UL did globally – and integrated locally. UL ensures that all these services provided comply with regional, national and international regulations and standards, and also meet the needs of insurers, developers and investors. Apart from bringing its global experience in the the renewable energy space to support the solar and wind energy sectors in India, UL has also taken a lead in identifying and offering solutions to demands that arise as green energy gains further ground in the country. Some of these areas include: • Standards development Through its participation in technical committees, UL engages with the MNRE and allied bodies like the SECI, NISE and NIWE experience to devise a robust country-specific standards and conformity assessment framework. In the energy industry, one of the biggest challenges until recently for UL was working in a sector that did not define minimum requirements to evaluate and assess the quality, performance and operational efficiency of equipment and installations as a whole. A worrying factor that UL observed was that there was a gap in understanding the long term implications of renewable investment – ultimately, for the clean energy program to succeed, it is not the amount of installations that matter but the quality of power output. Through various engagements with stakeholders, the company has consistently articulated these challenges and provided solutions to overcome them. UL believes that the recently announced move toward greater quality control in the solar sector is a welcome one. • Supporting agriculture through adoption of solar pumps By circumventing the need for either electricity or fossil fuels like diesel to run irrigation pumps
  • 14. for the fields, solar based water pumps are a boon to farmers in the remote areas the country and are emerging as an important tool to invigorate the agricultural sector. UL has played a critical role in the large scale adoption of solar water pumping systems in India by helping to ensure that only the systems that meet the quality and performance criteria as defined in MNRE specifications are qualified to be installed in the country. UL’s state of the art Solar Pump testing facility in Bangalore is capable of testing PV Modules, Pump Controllers and the pump assembly as a complete system. • Creating energy infrastructure for smart cities Smart meters - With over 200 million smart meters installed either in operational or pilot processes in India, consumer concerns about potential safety & performance hazards associated with smart meters are increasing. Various utilities seeking to install energy meters, request the suppliers to submit type test reports from a BIS-accredited laboratory to ascertain compliance with the national standards of safety, accuracy and communications protocol. Identifying this need, UL in India has made an investment in a comprehensive testing facility dedicated to smart meters. Through the testing facility, UL will cater to the growing needs of certification in the advanced metering industry. UL in India intends to provide safety research and advisory services to key stakeholders, including utilities, regulators and non-utility users of smart meters. Smart Grids - As an ever- increasing number of products and systems become interconnected, the need to verify interoperability between them prior to installation and use is a critical cost and time saver. UL provides testing and certification services for smart grid product and system interoperability, performance and security. Exploring the Indian Energy Market with Innovation In the renewables sector in India, UL is currently focused on driving multi- stakeholder effort to develop Indian standards for energy storage systems and support the burgeoning market for composite materials through its extensive suite of testing, certification and advisory services. To attain international repute and be sustainable in the long run, advanced manufacturing capabilities in expensive sectors like clean energy must be aided by certification Concentrating our efforts and resources on public safety and helping India with a wide range of quality and safety issues ““
  • 15. programs, and this is what UL is striving to provide in India. The UL 2900, launched in 2016 is an all-encompassing standard series to assess cyber security of network connected devices. Considering the ambitious Smart Cities Mission and the movement toward creating a digital economy, cyber security is becoming a priority area and UL is eager to lend its experience to devise standards and deliver solutions that are relevant to India. Living the Public Safety Mission As a company built on the core philosophy of promoting safety for all, UL’s operations transcend business undertakings to encapsulate varied Not-For-Profit efforts. In India, the body of work under its NFP programme to advance public safety touches critical areas of road safety, fire safety and access to clean water. Through collaborations with premier educational institutions, government agencies, industry bodies and other non profits, UL has, over the past few years, contributed profoundly to the understanding of fire hazards in India and ways to combat them. A prime example of this is the first of its kind fire façade test at IIT Gandhinagar to study the impact of fire on glass façade buildings. The National Fire Safety Council, which UL has been hosting over the past decade, brings several government and private stakeholders together to deliberate on improving fire safety mechanisms in the country. In the road safety space, UL is dedicated to grooming youth to become safety ambassadors of tomorrow. A pioneering effort in this area is the enlightening, multipart safety quiz competition called ‘The National Safety Science Quiz’ that is conducted in partnership with NDTV. UL’s safety education efforts are expected to reach more than 55,000 students from over 750 schools across 10 cities in India. Through, its on-going partnership with the Safe Water Network that began in 2012, UL provides grants and audits services that enable affordable and reliable access to clean water, thereby empowering communities to own and manage safe water systems. To-date, this crucial collaboration has brought clean to more than 600,000 people in rural Indian villages. UL’s vision for the Future As India gallops into the digital arena with increased adoption of mobile telephony and internet access, UL will strive hard to create a safe digital ecosystem to ensure the safety and security of interconnected systems that span electricity grids to digital transactions. Over the next few years, UL is also dedicated to work actively in changing the safety culture in the country by making ordinary consumers more safety conscious. While UL works primarily in the B2B space, it also wants to deepen its involvement in promoting safety awareness. After all, the products that they validate touch consumers lives directly and an increase in safety consciousness will lead to a ‘demand push’ scenario where consumers influence the acceleration of safety and quality legislations. Steering the Success of UL in India Suresh Sugavanam, Vice President and Managing Director of UL South Asia is steering the company’s growth in India since 2013. Having worked in high profile roles in global conglomerates like Suzlon, E&Y, Boston Consulting Group where he has dealt with the energy sector, Suresh’s arrival to UL India has been timely. Suresh’s strategies to propel the company’s growth include expanding laboratory infrastructure, investing in technical and managerial upskilling, assimilating and bringing UL’s global expertise to India, and to develop and offer locally relevant solutions. Thereby contribute to accelerating India’s GDP growth – to address domestic and export needs. Suresh has also broadened the reach and impact of UL’s not-for-profit mission leveraging Research, Outreach, Standards & Education on topics such as fire safety, road safety, quality and standards framework for the country.

Tata Power has been a pioneer in the Indian power sector value chain and has been at the forefront in assimilating advancements in technology and providing competitive, reliable and quality power to its consumers. The company has been constantly investing in technology and innovative practices, thus remaining effective and efficient in its deliverables. In an exclusive chat with Mr. Anil Sardana, the CEO & MD of Tata Power, we discuss about the current initiatives and the future endeavors at Tata Power. This Interview is sure to give you a whole new perspective and insight into one of the most decorated Energy Providers in the world. 1) Kindly brief us about Tata Power. Kindly sketch a brief history of Tata Power. What is the current Industry scenario from your point of view? Buoyed by the vision of its founder, Late Shri Jamshetji N Tata, that clean, cheap and abundant power is one of the basic ingredients for the economic progress of a city, a state or a country, Tata Power began its operations in 1915 by commissioning India’s first large hydroelectric project in Khopoli, Maharashtra. Being a century old company, we are committed to providing our customers with reliable and uninterrupted power supply and other solutions, teamed with superior customer service. The company today touches the lives of every stakeholder by adding value to their lives through various initiatives. These initiatives seep down to the last beneficiary, be it employees, customers, communities surrounding our areas of operations, shareholders, investors, and the nation at large. Tata Power currently has an installed gross generation operating capacity of 10,613 MW, of which, clean energy portfolio is 3141 MW, making us one of the largest non-fossil based energy players in India. Tata Power has reiterated its commitment to clean energy, and announced that its non- fossil fuel energy capacity will be 35- 40 per cent by 2025. Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Power, and is the Company’s primary investment vehicle for clean and renewable energy based power generation capacity. Tata Power is present in the entire life-cycle of the power business viz. Fuel and Logistics, Generation (thermal, hydro, solar and wind), Transmission, Distribution and Trading. It has successful public- private partnerships in Generation, Transmission and Distribution in India. Besides India, it has operations in Africa, MENA region, and South-East Asia. TATAPOWER:Sustaining the Pioneering spirit in the pursuit of Innovation | NOVEMBER 201714 INTERVIEW WITH INSIGHTS SUCCESS
  • 17. The industry scenario in India is bullish on renewable capacity buildup, whereas conventional thermal power may not see new builds in the recent times but may witness revamping of facilities for them to become environmentally benign. The sector may also see large scale distribution reforms. 2) On which innovation is Tata Power currently working on? Tata Power is continuing its pioneering spirit by pursuing various innovative solutions in Decentralized Distributed Generation (DDG). DDG enables small-scale technologies to produce electricity close to the end users of power. The technologies used often consist of modular (often renewable- energy based) generators, offering potential benefits like providing electricity with higher power reliability and security, along with fewer environmental consequences than traditional power generators. The pioneering spirit is at the root of every Tata Power team member & the pursuit for innovative products, solutions, and business models will continue. Tata Power has always set a standard in adopting sustainable practices in its business by using innovative technology, providing customers access to energy-efficient processes, increasing green generation capacity and partnering with institutions of scientific learning. 3) Kindly tell us about the green initiatives undertaken by Tata Power. In the quest to deliver clean energy, we as a Company are focusing on building a robust renewable energy portfolio, scouting for clean sources of power, reducing our carbon footprint and investing in cleaner technologies and global resources. Powered by Greenolution, Tata Power in 2015 launched ‘Be Green’ campaign following the mantra that green is the only way to evolve and has set new benchmarks by caring for the planet and its future. The campaign follows a holistic approach towards energy and resource conservation and encourages consumers to take the pledge by signing up to any five of their enlisted pledges. In last few years, Tata Power has launched diverse DSM programs which include appliance exchange, load shift and energy audits. Some innovative programs like “Demand Response”, a smart grid solution and “Thermal storage”, a load shift solution were acknowledged at a national level. Tata Power is one of the earliest Mr. Anil Sardana CEO & MD NOVEMBER 2017 | 15

For decades, Tata Power has been successfully supplying power to the country. We have built robust Private Public Partnerships with various entities and are proud to be the largest integrated power company in India. Notwithstanding competition and regulation, we believe that dealing ethically with stakeholders is the best policy and affirm to the adage, ‘honesty is the best policy’, and our stakeholders — be they consumers or government regulators — have applauded us for it. Business ethics, corporate governance, sustainability, community relations, and being an employer of choice, along with providing clean, competitive, abundant, and uninterrupted power supply are Tata Power’s key tenets in building corporate character and trust in the marketplace. This commitment is steadfast and deep down in every employee and associate, and that’s what helps the team stay focused in pursuing its objectives. 5) What are the upcoming future prospects of Tata Power. In line with the government’s objective towards promoting renewable energy, Tata Power has a well-defined growth plan and is pursuing actions towards achieving the same. The Company aims to build a total capacity of 20,000 MW by 2025. We are working towards achieving this target and, in FY17, we have added about 1400 MW of capacity with various projects in pipeline. For the next 3 years, the company has sketched out a well-defined plan to shape up its balance sheet, and is pursuing actions towards achieving the same. We wish to increase our solar & wind businesses significantly over a period of time; as the government is expected to bid out large scale projects to meet its target. We are exploring multiple options, both Greenfield and acquisitions, to be able to capture the market for Solar, Wind, and hydro based generation. The Company is also in the process of acquiring suitable land parcels in various states to support development of solar and wind projects. 6) Finally, can you brief us about your most successfully incorporated strategy, in terms of energy production and distribution, currently in the market? In terms of energy production, a quick ramp up of non- fossil fuel capacity to 30% of portfolio has been a successful strategy. In distribution, turnaround of ailing state-owned enterprise in Delhi has been a well-executed strategy. Tata Power has recently signed a joint venture between Tata Power and the Government of NCT of Delhi with the majority stake being held by Tata Power Company (51%). The company started operations on July 1, 2002 post the unbundling of the erstwhile Delhi Vidyut Board (DVB) and has been the frontrunner in implementing power distribution reforms in the capital city and is acknowledged for its consumer-friendly practices. Since privatization, the Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses in Tata Power-DDL areas have shown a record decline. Today, AT&C losses stand at 8.59%, which is an unprecedented reduction of around 84% from an opening loss level of 53% in July 2002. Tata Power has recently signed a Distribution Franchisee Agreement (DFA) with Ajmer Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (AVVNL) to cater to the power requirements of customers in Ajmer by replicating this success story of Delhi. | NOVEMBER 201716

The Japanese breakthrough gives the hope that humans will one day be able to use an inexhaustible source of energy in space. ‘Breakthrough in wireless energy transmission’, What does this mean exactly? It’s that humanity which has now officially begun to realize one of the most aspiring thought th experiments of the 20 century – The Dyson Sphere. Japan is struggling to expand its scientific opportunities. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has contributed to this major scientific achievement. With the use of microwaves, JAXA’s researchers were able to transmit 1.8 kilowatts of energy through the air to a receiver 170 feet away. There are no wires, no cables, no pipelines, no trains, no trucks, no nothing. Just Energy. Through the air. Granted, it is not a lot of energy –1.8 kW is about sufficient to run an electric kettle, according to the reports. “This was the first time someone has managed to send a high output of nearly 2 kilowatts of electric power through microwaves to a small target, with the use of a delicate directivity control device,” as per JAXA researches. Today, they can get into what this wireless energy transmitted is for- JAXA has been investing on a system that would use solar-powered satellites to transmit energy directly to the Earth. This Space Solar Power System would define that solar power would be available anywhere on the earth, at any time of day, regardless of whether or there is no sunlight on the planet. JAXA has evaluated that the system would probably not be ready until 2040 and they even haven’t find out how to achieve the large structure they need into space, or how to develop it, or how to maintain it. Hats off to all those Scientists! Just imagine the power of this innovation. When a great theoretical physicist and mathematician Freeman Dyson look through the science fiction novel Star Maker, he was truly inspired to propose what has become called as the Dyson Sphere, which is a wide range of solar panels that enclose the sun and beam energy back to the Earth. Considering JAXA continues to improve this technology, and assuming it looks a major investment from the right parties, at the end of this modern era we could have access to a renewable, sustainable source of energy. With established centers across 8 Indian cities, the company boasts of its presence in Delhi NCR, Ludhiana, Jagraon, Bangalore, Mysore, Patna, Lucknow & Dhanbad. “Real estate has been considered as the most sought of investment as per the Indian investor’s psyche.” Like any other market, Real Estate sector also has its highs and lows. Although investors have minted money during the boom period of 2002-2013, they also have seen the declining phase of the market between 1994-2002 when the properties were sold at half their peak price. Expecting similar returns in nascent markets might be possible, but it won't be fair to expect the same kind of return in developed markets. Lack of Buyer’s Interest The bear phase of the market has directly touched the sentiments of investors and people are not very keen on buying the property looking at the unclear future picture of few of the projects. The sector carries a baggage due to ignorance and opaque regulation which needs to be settled to improve market sentiments. Decline in a number of buyers for residential projects can be witnessed clearly due to the lack of appropriate pricing, which is found as high as compared to the average income of investors and rental aspects of the property. This is one major factor that has impacted the level of demand for end users as well as the investors. Buying Opportunity A boom in the Real Estate market is expected with GDP is moving to 7.5- 8% per annum. Moreover, the current government has also tried to bring clarity to both buyer and developer in the form of a real estate regulator bill which makes real estate investment more lucrative and regulated investment option. Due to the correction phase in real estate sector and rupee depreciation, investors can find properties being sold at half the price of their peak value. Although the cost of construction has risen over the past few years and the compliance cost is also expected to go up in view of introduction to Real Estate regulators, buyer’s can still find properties which are sold at a cheaper price due to rupee depreciation and large unsold inventories. The approach in the current market scenario should be to invest under construction residential properties rather than the constructed ones, in view of the discounted price of the former as compared to the latter one. This is the time when investors should search for best possible options in terms of the legality of project, location, pricing and rental/future aspects in order to enjoy the best out of the market. | NOVEMBER 201726 EXPERT’S ADVICE

Think Before You Buy Although, we can find properties with a lot of freebees and payment options similar to SIP, we also need to look at the details of the property with respect to location, track record of the developer, papers, and approvals in line with new regulations. A suggestion would be to buy sensibly rather than being lured by the lucrative buying options. After all, it is not only about the packaging but the quality of the item being bought. Over-leveraging in the current market scenario is a clear no-no, which means people should only invest the money which is surplus and ready for investment rather than being lured by the market. Investors in the past have invested out of the pocket while being caught by lucrative marketing activities and in turn have burnt their hands when it came to paying the cost of the project during the market slowdown. Better the materials and manufacturing techniques, efficient the hydraulic components with high power densities. General Electric has planned to launch a four turbine project, which is going to store energy from the blades of the turbine to gather water which could generate hydroelectric power which will be first instance of combining two energies to provide reliable sustainable energy. Higher operating pressures and closer tolerances are the factors that leads to hydraulic machine more vulnerable to wear and damage ensuing from oil contamination and inadequate lubrication. This leads to the importance of proactive maintenance. The things to focus on may vary: Oil Life is the issue that must be talked of as at 110°C and above for extended periods will turn into black as ink and smell unmentionable, it emerges the need of hotter oil as it will rapid the speed of reactions exponentially. Oil viscosity is the important element for both adequate lubrication and proficient power transmission. Seal and hose life, the standard of elastomers used to create hydraulic seals and hoses are also getting raised. Types of Hydraulic Structures A dam is a Hydraulic Structure which holds the water in a reservoir as potential energy, like a weir is a type of hydraulic structure which can be utilized to pool water for irrigation, establish grade control or as a new way to divert the flow away from eroding banks, they are again sub-divided into Gravity Dam, Earth Dam, Rockfill Dam, Weir Dam, Barrage, Arch, Buttress Dam. In that, some are used for storage and some for diversion purpose. Factors Affecting Site Selection Topography could be one of the most important factors as a narrow site will reduce the amount of material required in the dam which will reduce the cost to invest in. Faults and shears should be not present in the foundation of the dam. This makes a requirement for the better and expensive foundation which is leads to another factor Geology. Another element to be inculcated is Appurtenant as the cost of these structures is not high than the cost of the dam, economy in design could be achieved by considering their consequence at the time of site selection. Site should be chosen where proper water supply, disposal, electric power should be available while construction is under process, so Local Condition is too crucial. Easy excess to all these factors will be a great relief for the contractors and engineers. Pursuit and Purpose of Dams Various aims could be there to construct a dam, be it the production of electricity; water storage for irrigation or human consumption; flood management; and also navigation and recreation. With the dam, majorly production of Hydroelectricity is done which offers a great advantage in electric networks to adapt the power supply to quickest changes in power demand. A huge crowd surrounds the area which is exposed to the flood, the usage of dams for flood control should be raised. Experts advise dams shall be built for the sake of unpredictable weather conditions from drought condition to heavy rainfalls and that will also ensure the stability of power grids as large dams are good at storing energy. • 34. he entire human history and Tanthropology is full of evidences as to how intelligent human beings have given rise to new technology and how they utilized that new technology to further our chances of survival. The technological development has reached such a phase now where human survival is something which is taken for granted. The enormous size of human population is a testimony to that fact. If it wasn’t for the newer drugs and equipments and procedures we would have still been dying of minor diseases like diarrhea. This is just one example as to how deep an impact the new inventions and technological developments have had on human life at large. Technology, of its own accord, cannot reach the millions and millions of human beings. It needs some assistance from another aspect of human interaction i.e. Economy. In today’s parlance Economy and Market go hand in hand. The Market forces have been instrumental in the spread of newer technologies to the grass roots. The combination of these two factors has had a humongous impact on our individual, social, political and personal lives. But this wasn’t the case if you travel only a few hundred years back. The current phase of technological and economical development could be traced back to the period which is famously known as’ Industrial Revolution’. It started in the late 18th century Britain and spread to the various parts of the world. The parts of the world which could garner these forces in their favor are currently known as ‘Developed Countries’. The so called “West” with capital ‘W’ is the EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES WHERE DO WE AS A NATION IN GLOBAL MARKET & Stand START-UP | NOVEMBER 201732 EXPERT’S ADVICE

  • 36. single word to describe them. Honestly speaking the rest of the world is still catching up with them. So where does India stand in all of this? We are a developing country and currently among the emerging economies of the world. The tag of “Developing country” means we are among those who are still catching up with the developed world. But the tag of ‘Emerging Economy’ gives that much of a positive outlook about our future prospects. Now keeping this larger picture in mind we can now discuss as to how Indian entrepreneurs can make it big in the Global arena. Last year was hailed as a year of Start-ups for India. With the change of political guard and a new found optimism of “Achchhe Din” young Indians have indeed come forward with their skills and courage in the business arena. It would be a bit too early to reach a judgement about the viability and success that these start-ups will have in the long run. We need to give them some time before they can establish themselves in the market, domestic as well as global! However there is this undeniable trend among these start-ups that not many among them are based on Inventions or something Substantially New. What I mean by ‘Substantially New’ is something which can have a Global impact. Something which might fundamentally change the way we do things. The period of Industrial Revolution is abound with such examples. For example Telephone completely changed the way we communicate with people. And if telephone seems to be an example from the distant past then we can consider Internet and Mobile technology which has further fundamentally changed the way we do things. None of the Start- ups that have come up in the last year in India show such a promise. Unfortunately most of our Start-ups are kind of Imitation ventures. For example online shopping websites like Flipkart, Snapdeal. They are the ideal representatives of the Indian start-ups although they are more than a few years old now. There are limitations to such ventures because as soon as domestic market is opened up to similar players in the global arena (e.g. Amazon) there is always a chance that our smaller fishes will be swallowed up by the bigger ones. To be fare to our young generation of entrepreneurs they do have all the skill sets and leadership qualities to make a huge impact in the global arena. Our young minds are fed with the same knowledge about how to run a business as do those in the West. Our business schools are imparting quality knowledge to its students which can help them become great business persons of the future. So problem of Indian Start-ups does not lie in the qualities that the individual entrepreneurs possess but in lack of an organized effort at a national level to do well in the extremely competitive global economy. An organized effort at national level means a synchronized, complementary and harmonious movement of the major players in the country’s economy i.e. the Political will, Research and Development efforts and the Market forces. Research and Development should give our young creative minds enough incentives to explore and come up with new inventions rather than make do with 'The Jugad’ method which is a buzzword of today’s young generation. These new technological inventions will then require the assistance of market forces in order to penetrate the grass roots of our domestic as well as global market. The abundance of political will in last couple of years has been a major advantage that the young entrepreneurs can make the most of. In absence of this organized effort our Indian start ups are facing competition from an organized research and development industry of the Western world which is well supplied with finances from the transnational private players which are hungry for more and more profits. The already established industrial giants have the capacity to eat our young start ups in absence of new inventions. No matter how good the managerial skills and leadership qualities the individual might have, there are limits to what they can do alone. This opinion may smell of an IP professionals bias towards Research and Development but if we turn some pages of history then this bias might well be justified. | NOVEMBER 201734

  • 40. Information Technology is redesigning & revamping the Energy & Utility (E&U) sector in every aspect. The world is transforming power sources to green, renewable energy radicals and is implementing complex demanding management methods. IT is working as a catalyst & a critical engine in the transitions, whether implementing Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solutions, addressing the customer management environment, or managing other key areas in power generation, distribution and customer services stratum. The catalyst is contributing in the energy sector through the dedicated combination of both software & hardware designed in conjunction with the energy industry. The energy sector has implemented Internet of Things (IoT) to change the way we consume, generate, transmit and distribute energy in the connected era. The Present connected energy market, which includes applications related to the generation and transportation of electrical energy, micro-generation, smart grid and distribution monitoring and smart metering, is estimated to be worth around USD$11.7 billion. This huge investment and potential market conditions have driven the development of the “Smart Grid,” and further technological developments have made it more practical. The smart grid is an electricity generation, transmission and distribution network enhanced by automated (digital) controls, auditing and telecommunications capabilities. It has enabled automated, bidirectional flow of information while providing real-time, two-way flow of electrical energy. Consequently, the stakeholders involved in the electricity chain–from generation plant to dwelling, industrial and commercial users–gain insight of both electrical power flow and the infrastructure transporting it. Existing infrastructure is becoming smarter with the deployment of new digital equipment and smart devices. The IoT has helped in establishing internet connectivity with energy producing plants, equipment and devices. IoT is also connecting these devices to intelligent networks and using data analytics to extract meaningful and actionable insights from devices. In the context of the smart grid technology, this means allocating computing intelligence throughout the infrastructure. Smart grid provides a wide range of operations which start with embedded sensors used in wind turbine vanes that control its pitch, rotation & function in real-time response to changing wind conditions, to sub-station control systems that respond promptly to events and minimizes production downtime primarily occurs due to network disturbances.in both cases. However, the real vision/beauty of Internet of Things (IoT) is that it develops spaces or opportunities to realize the potential of data gathered through the cloud that resides in existing un-interfaced infrastructures, using data analysis to extract insight and intelligence from smart devices. After data compilation from every aspect of the electricity supply chain, system engineers can implement simulation models, powerful analytics and what-if scenarios to create precise predictions about grid status & associated conditions. Possibilities associated with predictive analytics and its transition operation from reactive to proactive are the defining and most important features of a smart grid. It enables electrical companies and grid system operators to utilize smart grid technology in: Trimming Capital Expenses With the advent of IoT in smart grid, a precise match between demand and supply across the grid becomes possible. The companies associated with electricity generation become able to meet peak demand without redundant generation of electricity and at the same time can also trace efficient distribution paths, minimizing transmission costs and ensuring optimum asset operation. Call-for Management Deeper insight into consumption arrangement in combination with smart grids predictive ability allows implementation of the large number of energy conservation initiatives, including demand-response, time-of- day usage fees and dynamic pricing. Smart grids are maintaining a proper balance between demand & supply and minimize the wastage caused by over- provisioning by base or peak load. Decrease in Maintenance Costs Having a deeper look into the activity of various processes involved in electricity generation, transmission and asset distribution enables implementation of rapid processes used while diagnosing remote faults, minimizes the need of frequent site visits and enable high predictive maintenance for more efficient technical support provided by engineering teams on areas of greatest need. Comply with Regulations By having greater the inclination towards the use of renewable energy, supporting more efficient methods of energy generation, transmission, distribution and aiding more efficient ways for lesser consumption; digitalization of electricity and utility companies can meet regulatory obligations along with reducing carbon emissions. Implementation of smart grids in the electrical industry can help in the emission reduction to 20 percent below the 1990 levels by the year 2020, to 54-68 percent below 1990 levels by 2030, and to nearly 100 percent below 2020 levels by 2050. Augment User Engagement Competition inside the deregulated markets and energy savings targets of certain regulated markets can be overcome through the implementation of smart grids. Electrical companies are using the smart grids as a solution in developing an accurate picture of customers’ usage patterns to develop more sophisticated & tailored products and service offerings. The smart grid technology is helping electrical companies in developing capabilities to proffer tomorrow’s technology solutions in the E&U domain. However, there is still a huge runway for growth. Smart grid technology can enormously encourage operators to act now to capitalize this clear market opportunity with the development in the IoT. | NOVEMBER 201740

WEATHERIZATION PROGRAM - NEED, INSIGHT, AND IMPLEMENTATION | NOVEMBER 201742
  • 45. Insights into Weatherization procedure Typically following steps are taken: Step1: In the Weatherization process home’s audit is done. The auditor keeps focus on to check: • Areas like windows, pipes, wiring that penetrate ceiling and floor, doors, sealing cracks, etc., for high- potential heat loss. • Light fixtures near attic space • heat loss due to air-duct • dampers of the exhaust fans • pipe condition • wall, floor, and ceilings condition • door and window sealings • and more An auditor then proposes the changes which can make home more energy efficient. Step2: Utility companies call for a bid to implement changes from its qualified contractor network. Step3: A selected contractor implements changes in the home. Step4: Utility company asks its inspector to validate the changes incorporated in the home. Step5: Once the inspector approves the changes then the Utility company pays to the contractor. The normal flow mentioned above might need to adjust to handle cases where low-earning families are not meeting income, age, earnings, etc criteria. Implementation of the Weatherization Program While implementing the solution, we considered a list of actors. These are: • Administrator • Customer • Auditor • Inspector • Contractor These actors are using the web-based portal and mobile application. The web-based application is developed on the Windows platform. The mobile application is developed using Xamarin. The web-based portal works under the contemporary browsers. The mobile application works on iOS and Android. Summary The solution is designed and developed mainly for the US residential market. However, the author believes the similar need does exist in all markets including India. or energy saving, a FWeatherization program is quite common to implemented by the Utility companies in the western part of the world. The program is mainly run for the low-earning families. This article emphasize on IWORKTECH’s experience on building a platform for the US-based company. What is weatherization? As per Wiki, Weatherization (American English) or weatherproofing (British English) is the practice of protecting a building and its interior from the elements, particularly from sunlight, precipitation, and wind, and of modifying a building to reduce energy consumption and optimize energy efficiency. Why the weatherization needed? One thinks that if my house is well insulated than I am good as far as the heat protection of the home is a concern. It is true that various types of insulation can block drafts of the cold winds and protect the home. It gives protection from the “Conductive” heat flow. We still need weatherization to protect. It primarily reduces “Convective” heat flow. NOVEMBER 2017 | 43 EXPERT’S ADVICE
