Mild Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) The increased oxygen greatly enhances the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria, reduces swelling and allows new blood vessels to grow more rapidly into the affected areas. It is a simple, non-invasive and painless treatment. Treats Post-concussion syndrome, supports chemo and radiation therapy, speed up sport recovery. More energy and vitality. Anti-aging, more collagen for healthy skin.
2. Mitohealth Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
• Brief History of HBOT
• How does it work?
• Scientific Research
• Anti-aging, sport and injury
recovery
Conditions:
● Post-Concussion Syndrome
● Stroke
● Cancer support
● Fibromyalgia
● Multiple Sclerosis
● Post Viral Fatigue
● Covid 19 long Haulers
3. Introduction
● Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is the use of oxygen in a pressurized
chamber. Hyper = increased; baric = pressure.
● Atmospheric pressure is the pressure exerted at sea level.
One Atmospheric Pressure = 1 ATA
● Brain makes up 2% of body weight but uses 20% of body oxygen. Only .3
% of inhaled oxygen gets into the mitochondria
4. History of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
● In 1662, British physician, Henshaw built the first hyperbaric
chamber, it was called Domicilium. Increased pressures were
used for the treatment of acute disease. Oxygen was discovered
in 1775.
● 1834 The first hyperbaric chamber was built in France.
● 1860 First hyperbaric chamber was built in North America
5. History of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
● 1877 The first portable hyperbaric chamber was developed. By this
time, most European cities had hyperbaric oxygen chambers.
● 1879 French doctors began performing surgeries in hyperbaric
chambers.
● 1891 Doctors in US began using hyperbaric oxygen therapy to
treat nervous disorders
6. History of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
● 1966 HBOT was found to be effective in treating stroke
patients
● 1970 HBOT was found to be effective in treating Multiple
Sclerosis
7. How Does HBOT Work?
● Room air contains
21% of oxygen,
enough to fill
most of the
oxygen sites on
our red blood cells
8. How Does HBOT Work?
● Breathing 100% oxygen loads the remaining
sites on the hemoglobin.
● This increases blood oxygen levels by as much
as there are remaining sites on the red blood
cells.
9. What sets Hyperbaric Oxygen apart from breathing 100% oxygen?
● The pressure encourages the oxygen to dissolve in
the blood plasma, while only the red cells transport
oxygen
10. What sets Hyperbaric Oxygen apart from breathing 100% oxygen?
● Oxygen under pressure enters all body fluid systems;
● Normally, only 0.3 % of inhaled oxygen gets into the
mitochondria, the final site of energy production.
11. How Does HBOT Work?
Henry’s law, increase in pressure allows more gas to be dissolved into any
given liquid.
● HBOT greatly increases
oxygen concentration even
with reduced or blocked
blood flow.
● Stimulates an increase in
internally increased
antioxidants.
● Enhances white blood cell
action.
12. High Pressure VS Mild Pressure
*HBOT is currently indicated for 14 diseases. Used for many
Off label indications internationally based on clinical research*
16. Scientific Research and Conditions
● HBOT treats the underlying disease process that causes a wide
variety of chronic conditions.
● Helps reduce inflammation throughout the body and in the
brain.
● Enhances your body’s immune system and ability to fight
infection.
17. Fibromyalgia
A clinical study
involving 60 patients
has shown that 40
hyperbaric oxygen
sessions can correct
the brain’s pain
processing function
based on SPECT
imaging.
18. Fibromyalgia
● Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can successfully break the vicious cycle of pain
and microcirculatory impairment.
● Some of the neuron cells around the injury are still alive, but don’t have
enough oxygen to function well. They are metabolically active but neurons
can’t fire.
19. Anti-aging
● HBOT is not only used for treatment of medical conditions; it is also
available as a natural therapy in cosmetics and spa therapies.
● mHBOT is a natural therapy with no side effects.
● mHBOT ramps up your body’s immune system and increases blood
flow and increases detoxification.
● Increases collagen and elastin production, increases anti-oxidant
production, increases concentration and cognitive function.
20. How can mHBOT benefit me?
• Boosts the supply of circulating stem cells
• Promotes the growth of new blood vessels
• Boosts the efficacy of chemotherapy drugs
22. Recommend HBOT
“I am convinced that my complete lack of side effects from the chemo and radiation was due
largely to my daily oxygen treatment at Martina's, so much so that we bought our own hyperbaric
chamber when we left Christchurch!
I am now 5 weeks post surgery and my histology report has shown a complete response to the
treatments - no tumour cells remained. This fantastic outcome only happens to 10% of people
undergoing bowel cancer treatment, and we are convinced the hyperbaric oxygen played a
significant role in this.”
- Sol Clement, Westcoast, NZ
23. I found the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy hugely beneficial
“During a recent six week block of chemo and radiation for head and neck cancer at the
Christchurch Hospital I undertook a six week course of hyperbaric oxygen therapy at Health on
Hagley with Martina Van den Heuvel. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy had been recommended to me
by my GP Dr. Tim Ewer so I was pleased to be able to locate someone in Christchurch who was
able to provide this service. I found the oxygen therapy hugely beneficial (i) in restoring my energy
levels (ii) in helping to overcome nausea and (III) lifting my spirits. I always left feeling happier
and healthier. Martina was able to fit me in around other appointments - her flexibility and
generosity were much appreciated.”
- Cynthia McConville, Golden Bay, NZ
24. CONSISTENTLY IMPROVING
"If I have a hard training session on Monday and have hyperbaric treatment in the
afternoon, I can train on Tuesday and don't have the same levels of fatigue and muscle
soreness. Since I have started using the hyperbaric chamber I have noticed that I am
recovering from my intense training sessions much faster with reduced muscle soreness,
reduced fatigue, and generally feeling more energised. This has been clearly portrayed in my
running and cycling times which are now consistently improving and I am feeling much
stronger"
- Emma Mackie, Havelock North, Triathlete
25. MORE CONNECTED TO US ALL
"Since beginning hyperbaric treatments we noticed subtle changes after about two
weeks. Pete is non-verbal however his language has improved with the treatment.
He is less anxious, listens better and is generally a happier boy and more
connected to all of us. Ina is very supportive of us and Pete showed very early on
that he was comfortable in this environment"
- Cathy Eden, mum of Peter, Napier
26. Refreshed And Revitalized
“In the last three years I have had many sessions in the oxygen
chamber. Martina has had 11 years of experience in this field. She is
very dedicated to her work and has her clients best interest at heart. I
always feel very refreshed and revitalised coming out of the chamber
and therefore highly recommend HBOT therapy.”
- A.L. Christchurch
