5. Greehouse Effect
Causes:
Gases other than N2 and O2, especially
CO2 and H2O absorb infrared radiations
These gases act as an insulating blanket to
prevent heat from escaping
This causes an increase in the temperature
of earth
8. Global Warming
The concentration of CO2 is increased upto 400ppm
then temperature should rise as much as 1 degree
Celsius.
The main global temperature of earth’s surface is
about 15 degree Celsius.
17. Automobile
In automobiles during
incomplete combustion of petrol
we get smoke of different gases
which pollute our environment.
Some harmful gases which are
released from automobiles are
CO, NO and NO2 etc.
18. Production of Pollutants in Car Engine
Combustion of petrol manily produce
gases e.g, CO, NO and NO2 .
CO is produced due to the fast burning of
petrol and short availability of oxygen
When petrol burns at this high temperature
N2 and O2 present in air combine and form
NO and NO2
All these gases pollute the air
20. Additon of lead tetraethyl
Pb(C2H5)4 is added to petrol to slow down
the rate of combustion of petrol
This reduces the production of CO
Thus minimizing the air pollution
21. Catalytic converter
The unburnt hydrocarbons and CO
present in exhaust gases can be reduced
by mixing these gases with more air in the
presence of platinum catalyst
These gases are oxidized by O2
C8H18 + 25O2 16CO2 +18H2O
2CO + O2 2CO2
