Hydro Tasmania, an environmentally-conscious energy producer, believed workforce
mobilization would empower their field maintenance employees to make better-
informed decisions and improve operational efficiencies. In partnership with SAP and
UXC Oxygen, they introduced the SAP Work Manager Mobile App in conjunction with

The power of natural thinking
Hydro Tasmania, a global leader in clean energy
innovation, is Australia’s largest producer of
renewable energy and the nation’s largest water
manager. Owned by the Tasmanian government, the
company operates 55 major dams, 30 hydropower
stations, and has built some of the nation’s largest
wind farms.
“We generate power into the National Electricity
Market, so we’ve got a connector that goes across
to mainland Australia,” said Hydro Tasmania’s
Corporate Solutions Manager, David Shields.“We
also sell into the Eastern seaboard of Australia as
well as here in Tasmania.”
Hydro Tasmania sells hydro and wind power
through its retail business, Momentum Energy,
which specializes in providing quality products
and services to medium-sized industrial buyers.
Hydro Tasmania also offers its expertise on power
engineering, renewable energy, and environmental
solutions internationally through its consulting
business, Entura.
Hydro Tasmania is a $5 billion business which
employs over 1,100 workers, including 150
maintenance staff. For over 100 years, Hydro
Tasmania has built value for its owners, customers
and employees by operating with a deep respect for
the environment.

Harnessing technology for improved
efficiency and productivity
Hydro Tasmania’s 55 major dams all require close
monitoring and timely maintenance. Their 150 field
staff regularly visit the dams and record readings
to monitor proper performance. Typically, these
readings were written on a piece of paper and
subsequently entered into the company’s computer
system at the end of the day.
“Getting the data back into the system and into the
hands of engineers took quite a long time, and often
the quality of the data we gave back to them was not
what we wanted it to be,’’ said Shields.“Obviously,
things used to go missing. A lot of the guys would get
back to the office and they would go to put a reading
in and they would realize that they had missed a
couple, or that it was the wrong reading.’’
The company realized that providing maintenance
staff with mobility tools would improve productivity
and efficiency in the field, as well as save time spent
processing readings and handling errors. They also
believed mobilization would reduce site visits and
the need for rework.

Leveraging a trusted partnership
Hydro Tasmania leveraged their existing SAP
technology investment and working relationship
with SAP to develop a mobile solution to fit their
maintenance needs. A strong partnership grew from
SAP’s investment of time and resources to learn
about Hydro Tasmania’s business.
“It was really about sitting down together and
working through SAP’s understanding of our
business, what we do and where we get value,”
said Shields.
Hydro Tasmania sought mobile technology that both
increased efficiency, and provided a positive user-
friendly experience.
To meet its needs, the company chose the SAP
Work Manager Mobile App with plant maintenance
functionality because it aligned so well with the field
team’s work.
“We had some quite detailed requirements for
mobility and the SAP Work Manager Mobile App fit
those requirements pretty well. It was very unique
that we could actually change layouts and make it
user friendly for the guys,” said Shields.“It changes
the way people can do their work.”

rolled out on to the devices and away we went.”

Investing in mobile advancements
Using system integrator UXC Oxygen, Hydro
Tasmania rolled out the SAP Work Manager Mobile
App for field operations. Initially, 110 routine
and corrective maintenance staff used the app.
Additional workers followed suit during the next 12
months. Equipped with the work history of the asset
and the last set of readings on easy-to-use iPad Mini
tablets, Hydro Tasmania’s maintenance staff are
better prepared than ever to work productively and
safely. Improved analytics and better visibility help
the staff capture the higher-quality, real-time data
necessary to identify trends and safety concerns
before they become serious issues.
With one-third of their employees working outside of
cellular range, the SAP Work Manager App’s offline
functionality is essential.
“Remote workers will start the work order, record the
readings directly into the app, and record the time
while they’re there,” explained Shields.“Then, when
they get back into range, they will sync the device,
grab the data and upload it into the system.”
Leveraging UXC Oxygen’s expertise and the SAP
Work Manager Mobile App, Hydro Tasmania has
been able to put power in the hands of maintenance
staff by providing the tools and information they
need to work safely and efficiently.
“We measure success on user adoption rate, and it’s been really high,
especially for the guys who use it on a regular basis.”

Reaping the benefits
of mobile technologies
The SAP Work Manager Mobile App has helped
Hydro Tasmania improve employee productivity and
reduce costs. By implementing SAP Work Manager,
Hydro Tasmania has saved hundreds of thousands of
dollars a year in direct labor costs. They have saved
millions through performing better inspections and
resolving issues more efficiently. Additionally, remote
maintenance staff now save up to two hours a day
by syncing data automatically instead of entering it
manually.
“They’re not rushing as much and they’re actually
doing a better quality inspection. For us, that’s a
really big deal,” said Shields.“Every incident costs us
a lot of money. It’s all about risk management and
cost avoidance at the end of the day.”
The introduction of near real-time data flows has
enhanced communication between the field staff
and the engineering team. Improved communication
has enabled more efficient processes and improved
responsiveness, thus reducing costs due to human
error.
The ability to share photos and videos with the
engineering team has reduced the need for further
site visits. Remote access to email means more
timely assessments and a more productive field
staff. The company is also attracting higher-caliber
talent who are keen to work with leading edge mobile
technologies.
User adoption and satisfaction have been extremely
high for the SAP Work Manager Mobile App.
This has increased the levels of trust between
management, IT and staff in pursuing future mobile
implementations.

Owned by the Tasmanian government, the company operates 55 major dams, 30 hydropower stations, and has built some of the nation’s largest wind farms. “We generate power into the National Electricity Market, so we’ve got a connector that goes across to mainland Australia,” said Hydro Tasmania’s Corporate Solutions Manager, David Shields.“We also sell into the Eastern seaboard of Australia as well as here in Tasmania.” Hydro Tasmania sells hydro and wind power through its retail business, Momentum Energy, which specializes in providing quality products and services to medium-sized industrial buyers. Hydro Tasmania also offers its expertise on power engineering, renewable energy, and environmental solutions internationally through its consulting business, Entura. Hydro Tasmania is a $5 billion business which employs over 1,100 workers, including 150 maintenance staff. Executive overview Company Vision Why SAP Solution Benefits Future plans SAP Customer Success Story | Utilities | Hydro Tasmania Harnessing technology for improved efficiency and productivity Hydro Tasmania’s 55 major dams all require close monitoring and timely maintenance. Their 150 field staff regularly visit the dams and record readings to monitor proper performance. Typically, these readings were written on a piece of paper and subsequently entered into the company’s computer system at the end of the day. “Getting the data back into the system and into the hands of engineers took quite a long time, and often the quality of the data we gave back to them was not what we wanted it to be,’’ said Shields.“Obviously, things used to go missing. A lot of the guys would get back to the office and they would go to put a reading in and they would realize that they had missed a couple, or that it was the wrong reading.’’ The company realized that providing maintenance staff with mobility tools would improve productivity and efficiency in the field, as well as save time spent processing readings and handling errors. A strong partnership grew from SAP’s investment of time and resources to learn about Hydro Tasmania’s business. “It was really about sitting down together and working through SAP’s understanding of our business, what we do and where we get value,” said Shields. Hydro Tasmania sought mobile technology that both increased efficiency, and provided a positive user- friendly experience. To meet its needs, the company chose the SAP Work Manager Mobile App with plant maintenance functionality because it aligned so well with the field team’s work. “We had some quite detailed requirements for mobility and the SAP Work Manager Mobile App fit those requirements pretty well. Initially, 110 routine and corrective maintenance staff used the app. Additional workers followed suit during the next 12 months. Equipped with the work history of the asset and the last set of readings on easy-to-use iPad Mini tablets, Hydro Tasmania’s maintenance staff are better prepared than ever to work productively and safely. Improved analytics and better visibility help the staff capture the higher-quality, real-time data necessary to identify trends and safety concerns before they become serious issues. With one-third of their employees working outside of cellular range, the SAP Work Manager App’s offline functionality is essential. “Remote workers will start the work order, record the readings directly into the app, and record the time while they’re there,” explained Shields.“Then, when they get back into range, they will sync the device, grab the data and upload it into the system.” Leveraging UXC Oxygen’s expertise and the SAP Work Manager Mobile App, Hydro Tasmania has been able to put power in the hands of maintenance staff by providing the tools and information they need to work safely and efficiently. “We measure success on user adoption rate, and it’s been really high, especially for the guys who use it on a regular basis.” David Shields, Corporate Solutions Manager, Hydro Tasmania

By implementing SAP Work Manager, Hydro Tasmania has saved hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in direct labor costs. They have saved millions through performing better inspections and resolving issues more efficiently. Additionally, remote maintenance staff now save up to two hours a day by syncing data automatically instead of entering it manually. “They’re not rushing as much and they’re actually doing a better quality inspection. For us, that’s a really big deal,” said Shields.“Every incident costs us a lot of money. It’s all about risk management and cost avoidance at the end of the day.” The introduction of near real-time data flows has enhanced communication between the field staff and the engineering team. Improved communication has enabled more efficient processes and improved responsiveness, thus reducing costs due to human error. The ability to share photos and videos with the engineering team has reduced the need for further site visits. Remote access to email means more timely assessments and a more productive field staff. The company is also attracting higher-caliber talent who are keen to work with leading edge mobile technologies. User adoption and satisfaction have been extremely high for the SAP Work Manager Mobile App. This has increased the levels of trust between management, IT and staff in pursuing future mobile implementations.
