Skill Set
Management – Business, project, staff, client, change
Formostof mycareerI have hadto learnandapplyvarious managementskills. From 2006to2013I wasthe runningthe
accountancypracticeforGreystone as well as beinganexecutive directorinthe trust company. Duringthis time the staff
rose from 8 to 20 peopleandwe were shortlistedfor an Isle of ManBusinessAward for Excellenceandourturnover grew
continuously. Managing client expectations is a key aspect of running these businesses. Managing a team of people
across3 sites as I did with Leyland Daf provided its own challengesandprojectmanagementwaskey to my engineering
roles.
Accounting, auditing & finance
I have been workingin the Manxfinancialsectorfor20 years withinGreystone and its predecessorentities. I have been
the auditor of a range of companies, both local and international, in a variety of sectors. These have included AIM and
Plus listed organisationsandhave beenin varied sectors, notably Manxregulatedfinancial, insurance, miningandmedia.
I have had to make audit visits to Europe and Asia. From this work I have developed knowledge of financial reporting,
especiallyundertheUKand IFRSsystems. It hasbeenessentialthat I am ableto connectwithstaff at alllevels as I have
needed to take unpleasant news to Boards and to persuade clerks and shop floor staff to provide me with information.
Besides auditing I have worked with companies to provide management information. This usuallyinvolved working with
managementto identifyand analyse the importantfactorsto them, suchas sales mixes, and thenceprovidingmeaningful
reporting.
Company secretarial & legal
As anexecutivedirectorofGreystoneTrustCompanyLimited(anIoM FSAregulatedentity)alargepart of myresponsibility
was to act as a clientcompanydirectorandto administerandoperatethose companiesinaccordancewithapplicablelaw
andpractice. As suchI neededagood familiaritywith companylaw, andneededawarenessof law not onlyin the Isle of
Manbut other jurisdictions such as the UK, BVI etc. As a qualifiedcompanysecretaryI have an obligation(whichI have
met)to keep upto date with suchlegislation. Part of directorialresponsibilityisto ensurean orderlywindupof a company
whenits useful lifehas ended. I have actedasthe liquidatorfor numerousManxcompaniesandam abletoadvise onthe
desirabilityof various cessation routes. Such appointments have included court supervised liquidations as part of much
larger reconstruction schemes.
Isle of Man regulatory compliance
SinceIceasedasashareholderin GreystoneTrustCompanyLimited myrolehasbeenmorenon-executivebutI continued
my roleas MLRO (MonetLaunderingReportingOfficer) untilvery recentlyand still actas the Compliance Officer. Within
the companywe believe that providing a complianceroute to board level that bypasses the full executives provides a
valuable safeguard against potential conflicts.
Analysis
As notedabove I have neededtodemonstrateanalyticalskillstoprovidemanagementwithusefulinformation. Theseskills
are both verbal (to extract what is required, and what may already be being recorded, and to present numeric data) and

numeric andcalculative(toturnrawdataintousableinformation). Besidesidentifyingappropriatemanagementinformation
I have used such skills for valuation purposes.
Familiarity with engineering, materials and quality management
For the first half of my careerI was a metallurgicalbasedengineerorscientist. I am still a registeredCharteredEngineer
and makeattemptsto keepmy familiaritywith the subjectupto date. However the skillsand knowledgefrom that period
canbevery relevant. Myknowledgeofqualitymanagementisapplicabletomostofthe companiesandentitiesIdealwith,
especiallywhen combined with myanalytical skills. There are too many occasions when things go wrong because the
systems in place have not been criticallyappraised in the light of an organisations specific needs. Occasionallytoo my
specific metallurgical knowledge is relevant - for example when I have been auditing a gold mine in Uzbekistan.

Jerooy valuation
While acting as auditor for the Oxus Gold group the management had a serious issue when the Kyrgyzstan government
revoked the operating licence for the Jerooy gold mine prospect. I was commissioned at short notice to report on the
valuation of the prospectfor compensationandarbitrationpurposes. Myvisit to the minesite was, I am told, a majoritem
on Kyrgyz television news that day.
Merging Leyland Daf laboratories
Duringmy timewith LeylandDaf I identified and actioned theopportunityto bringboth the assemblyplant and component
plantlaboratoriesundercommonmanagement thus allowing commonalityof approach and cost and efficiencybenefits.
