● The first Ancient olympic games were started in
the Olympia valley (Greece) in 776 BC.
● These games were dedicated to Olympic God Zeus
● The games were first organised in the beautiful
valley of Greece Olympia, due to this fact these
games were called Olympics
● The ancient Olympic games continued till one
thousand years approximately

RulesforCompetition
1. The competitor must be only Greek and should be
physically fit.
2. Punished persons by law are not allowed to participate
in these games
3. The participants had to stay in Olympia for one month
before the beginning of these Olympic games.
4. For participation in games, they had to do one month
practice in advance.
5. Women were not allowed to participate in the
competitions and watch these games.
6. The amateurs were allowed to participate.
Assembly

Competitors and their father, brothers, and trainer
used to assemble in the Council house in front of God
Zeus statue. Participation oath would take place

A pig was sacrificed to be offered to the God Zeus

Oath regarding no use of unfair means to secure
victory. They had 10 months for training as per rules.

Introduction of the player to the spectators. If any spectator
had any objection against the player, he was not allowed to
play.
Declaration
The Chief Judge or some distinguished person
addressed the participants. Afterwards the events
were conducted.
Events
1. On the first day only religious functions but no event of the
competition was held.
2. On the second day march past, introduction of the competitors to the
spectators and the opening of the games. Followed by the
competitive events like Chariot rays horse race and pentathlon.
3. On the third day wrestling and boxing competition.
4. On the 4th day athletic events were held.
5. On the last and 5th day recreational programs were organised

Awards
● Olympic winners received a Crown made of Olive
Tree branch that was worn on their heads.
● Branches of the same were cut from backyard of
God Zeus’s Temple, supposedly planted by
Hercules.
● Statues were made too.
● Poems were composed in prairie of winners and
their names were recorded.
