3. Definition of Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy uses anticancer drugs that may
be given intravenously(IV) or by orally. The
drugs travel through the bloodstream to reach
cancer cells in most parts of the body.

4. Uses of Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is used as a cancer treatment for a
variety of purposes:
 To provide cancer treatment and cure a
specific cancer.
 To control tumor growth when cure is not
possible.
 To shrink tumors before surgery or radiation
therapy.
 To relieve cancer symptoms.
 To destroy microscopic cancer cells that may
be present after the known tumor is removed
by surgery.

5. Factors involved in Chemotherapy
The type of cancer.
The stage of the cancer(how far it has spread).
The patient’s age.
The patient’s overall health.
Other serious health problems(such as heart, liver
or kidney diseases).
Types of cancer treatments given in the past.

6. Chemotherapy Adoption Systems
Intravenous chemotherapy.
Intramuscular chemotherapy.
Oral chemotherapy.
Chemotherapy into an artery.
Chemotherapy into the peritoneum to abdomen.
Topical chemotherapy.

7. Side effects of Chemotherapy
As well as killing cancer cells, chemotherapy can
damage some healthy cells in the body. Such as blood
cells, skin cells and cells in the stomach. This can
cause a range of unpleasant side effects.
Feeling tired most of the time.
Feeling sick and vomiting.
Hair loss.
A sore mouth
Dry, sore or itchy skin
Loss of appetite

8. Side effects of Chemotherapy
Diarrhea or constipation.
Cognitive and mental health problems.
Many of these side effects can be treated or prevented
and most, if not all, will pass after treatment stops.
