3. AquaCritox® advanced super critical water
technology
AquaCritox® is a technology based upon the unique properties of water in
its near critical and super critical state.
When water’s temperature and pressure approach its critical point of 374˚C
(705˚F) and 21 bar (3,204 psi), respectively, it enters a supercritical
condition or ‘fourth phase’, i.e. an additional phase to its more familiar solid,
liquid and gaseous phases. Under these conditions the physical properties
of water change.
6. High solubility, low viscosity and high diffusivity means:
•Mass transfer rate is no longer the limiting factor
•Very fast reaction rate becomes possible
•Less than one minute residence time for +99.99% conversion
Relatively high fluid density means:
•Transport through the system allows for high mass throughput (small diameter
tubes/pipes)
Complete solubility of organic material, water and molecular oxygen
means:
•Complete conversion is achieved regardless of the nature of the organic species
•No SOx, NOx, dioxin or furan production (avoids permit issues)
•Non hazardous solid residue
•Effluent COD < 5 mg/l
8. Oxidation reaction
Very rapid oxidation of organics takes place under conditions above 221 bar
and 374oC (critical point of water). Additionally, more than 99.99% of
destruction efficiencies can be achieved with a reaction time of a fraction of a
minute, regardless of organic species’.
The products of the reaction include:
•Clean, permit free, CO2 rich gas (75% v/v)
•Non-hazardous and fully oxidised inorganic phosphate rich fine mineral
residue
•Treated water with COD of less than10mg/Ltr
Energy generated by this process may be classed as “renewable” and
may be eligible for green power credits.
9. AquaCritox® is:
Thermodynamically more efficient than incineration because it avoids the
large unrecoverable loss of potential energy to latent heat of water that is
unavoidable in any incineration process since adrying step prior to combustion
is necessary.
Commercially more attractive than anaerobic digestion or wet air oxidation
due to the fact that fast reaction rates, under near critical and super critical
conditions, result in a small plant footprint (lower capital cost).
Environmentally more sustainable since this process allows for easy recovery
and recycling of valuable by-products including commercial/food grade CO2
and thermal energy.
10. Multiple process applications
AquaCritox® is a platform technology that has multiple applications.
Examples are:
•Destruction of organics in
• Sewage sludge •Destruction of proteins and prions.

13. Utility requirements for Aquacritox® are as follows:
Oxygen: – Industrial grade LOX
Water: – Process water, at start-up only
– Top-up water will also be required for the steam circuit
– Cooling water
Fuel: – Natural gas or other fuel supply to start-up heater
(at start-up only)
Air: – Instrument air supply
14. Standard equipment
SCFI offer four standard AquaCritox® plant sizes.
AquaCritox® A10 nominal hydraulic rating of 600 ltr per hour
AquaCritox® A30 nominal hydraulic rating of 2,500 ltr per hour
AquaCritox® A100 nominal hydraulic rating of 10,000 ltr per hour
AquaCritox® A200 nominal hydraulic rating of 20,000 ltr per hour
15. Fully automated
Aquacritox® is fully automated and is designed to be multi-functional.
In order to ensure safety, quality and efficiency of operation the
AquaCritox® plant is controlled by a central, SCADA based control system.
The system monitors all operations.
The standard control system is based on Rockwell Automation hardware
and the FactoryTalk software system. Each stage of the process, start-up,
running, shut-down and CIP are fully automated and require little operator
input. The system is provided with security levels that ensure that critical
functions can only be changed by appropriately trained staff.
Compliance
AquaCritox systems are engineered to comply with all
relevant standards.
