Afghanistan has five main river basins and 35 sub-river basins that were created according to water law and management. The river basins include the Amu, Helmand, Harirod, Kabul, and North basins. The Ministry of Energy and Water operates 183 hydro-meteorological stations across the basins, with plans to install 36 more. Sixteen of the stations are located at Afghanistan's borders to monitor shared rivers with neighboring countries. Afghanistan works to cooperatively manage its water resources with neighboring countries through agreements and institutions like a transboundary water unit.
