1. Textual Analysis of Music Videos
You need to fully understand the conventions of music videos - and prove to
the examiner that you do – before making your own.
You must analyse at least three music videos from the genre you are
going to make in detail, with links to the artist’s website/Twitter feed etc
embedded in the blog.
The videos themselves need to be embedded from YouTube in your blog with
written description.
For each music video comment on:
Mise-en-scene
• Connotations (props, locations, people)
• Iconography
Camera
• The camera shots used (Close ups, long shots etc)
• The camera movements (zoom, pan, tilt, track)
Encoding/Decoding:
• Audience reception- preferred reading of the text
• Audience gratifications and pleasures offered
• Representation of groups
• Dominant Ideologies
Editing
• Pace of shots
• Continuity editing
• Montage sequences
• Special effects
• The transitions used
