the state’spublicsafetycommunity.FirstNetwillbringadvancedtechnologiesthatwill helpOhio’sfirstresponderssave
livesandprotect communities.

WINTER DRIVING TIPS FOR SAFETY
Vehicle Maintenance
Start winteroff right byensuringyourvehicle isingoodcondition.Checkthe battery,tire treadandwindshieldwipers.
Keepwindowsclear,putno-freeze fluidinthe washerreservoir,andcheckthe antifreeze.
Know Your Car
If possible,practice drivinginicyor snowyconditionsinanemptyparkinglotinfull daylight.Onthe road:
2. • Slowdownandallowplentyof distance tostopforvehiclesaheadof you.
• Knowwhatyourbrakeswill do.Ingeneral,if youhave antilockbrakes,applyfirm, continuouspressure.If you
don’thave antilockbrakes,pumpthe brakesgently.
• Ina skid,ease yourfootoff the gas while steeringinthe directionyouwanttogo. Stay off the pedals(gasand
brake) until youare able to maintaincontrol of yourvehicle.Thisprocedure,knownas“steeringintothe skid,”will
bringthe back endof yourcar inline withthe front.
Plan Ahead
• Checkthe weather,roadandtrafficconditions.Leave earlyif necessary.
• Familiarizeyourself withdirectionsandmapsbefore yougo,evenif youuse aGPS system.Letothersknowyour
route and expectedarrival time.
• Keepgastank close tofull.If yougetstuck intrafficor snow,you mightneedmore fuel togethome or keep
warm.
• If possible,avoiddrivinginhazardousconditionsorwaituntil conditionsimprove before venturingout.
Stock Your Vehicle
Carry itemsforcommonwinterdrivingtasksandsuppliesyoumightneedinanemergency:
• Snowshovel,broomandice scraper;
• Abrasive materialsuchassand or kittylitter,incase yourvehicle gets stuckinthe snow;
• Jumpercables,flashlightandwarningdevicessuchasflaresandmarkers;
• Blankets;
• Cell phone withcharger,water,foodandanynecessarymedicine (forlongertripsorinlightlypopulatedareas).
Stoppedor Stalled
• Staywith your car and don’toverexertyourself.
• Putbrightmarkerson the antennaor windowsandkeepthe interiordome lightturnedon.
• To avoidcarbonmonoxide poisoning,clearthe exhaustpipeandrunyour vehicle onlylongenoughtostay
warm.

The OhioTrafficSafetyOffice will be hostinga“Prosecutingthe DruggedDriver”course on January23, 2018, from 8:30
to 4:00 at the HighwayPatrol Academy,locatedat740 E. 17th
Ave.,Columbus. The purpose of thisclassisto familiarize
prosecutorsandlawenforcementofficerswiththe methodsandtechnical elementsof the DrugEvaluationand
ClassificationProgram(DECP).
There will be anoverviewof howDrugRecognitionExperts(DRE) are utilized,the use of toxicologywhendealingwitha
druggeddriverforOVI,currentcase lawdecisionsandmethodsof utilizingthe DREprogram, and participationinthe
administrationof StandardizedFieldSobrietyTests(SFSTs) inaDRE school wetlab. Highlytrainedandexperienced
veteranswhoare consideredleadersintheirrespectivefieldswillbe the instructorsusedtoteach.
Thiscourse has beenapprovedbythe Supreme Courtof OhioCommissiononContinuingLegal Educationfor6.00 total
