Do You Speak American? Essay
United States of America, small in history but large in diversity continues to face new challenges
with language as time continues to turn. In the documentary "Do You Speak American?" Robert
MacNeil analyzes the English language and reveals many dialects that culturally defines us.
Regional dialect is one of the many strongholds of all cultures and now it has reached its' zenith
and today it is slowly declining because it does not possess the human nature of advancement.
Optimistically, it allows people to learn how to cooperate with each other. In order to advance and
adopt a person has to change; I believe that the acceptance of cultural adaptations, diversity, and
industrialization can prove that the decline of speech does not cause a...show more content...
When many outsiders move in, local speech changes," said MacNeil. (DYSA?) The Mainer being
afraid in the same relation of fear as republicans being afraid of health care reform. People may not
agree to change but sometimes it is the only choice and acceptance is the first step into progression.
Optimistically, this allows people to communicate with the outside world easier because through
communication people will realize that there is not much difference between one another and
relations can easily grow. Language and communication between different cultures is complex; the
future holds many technological promises that will make these complexities easier to bear. This
dialect decline can be credited to the industrialization of communication which exploits the human
interest of entertainment, which in turn, expands and simplifies human communication. Billions of
people of all walks of life have assimilated to the language of modern technology and billions more
are left in the dusk. "Media exposure can spread new vocabulary and give people in different
regions an understanding of the "standard American." (PBS) The internet has allowed people to
communicate farther than ever before, share knowledge at light speed pace. We feel that we do not
have time to type "hey that was very funny" instead we type "LOL" we have simplified terms in
speech and have become accustomed to the internet world: speed equals success. Society's

American English Essays
The question of whether or not English should be an official language has been a controversial topic
since our country was founded. The English language is a tie that helps combine the many pieces of
our society together. Our nation should not acclaim bilingualism, but should enfold English as the
national language spoken in the United States, to secure the future unity of our nation.
The United States is a nation composed of many immigrants from all around the world. We are a
country of many cultural and racial ethnic groups that are constantly reacting to shape the American
culture. The English language binds and unites immigrants with native– born Americans. English
allows us to communicate with each other and discuss each...show more content...
It is starting to become the international language as well. Speaking one language helps the ability of
all backgrounds to communicate with one another. With so much diversity in the United States, we
need something that joins us together. To speak a language that is used by the world, will help all
Americans. English is the common bond of our community, and understanding it is the only way a
citizen will be able to fully participate in democracy, business, and education. It is the language of
international relations, as well as the language of our historical documents, of communication and of
safety. By making English the official language, it will help to bring together Americans, not propel
them farther apart.
Many Americans are composed of Hispanic origin. With such a great number of the population
speaking a second language, bilingualism will more than likely become an even more common
occurrence in many states, in the future. This thought strongly associates with the job market of the
United States. The second generation is becoming more bilingual, using one language for their home
and the other for business. Workers are going to have to be able to communicate with one another to
get the job done. Should native– born American employees learn to speak Spanish to communicate
with other fellow employees? My answer would have to be, no. A system that accommodates
immigrants in their native languages removes the

The 21st Century American
The traits of the typical American have changed drastically throughout the years. Americans have
become different in many ways from when they officially became independent in 1776 to the present
time in 2001. America is strong, powerful, and influential. Americans exemplify positive values,
selflessness, hospitality, and the American way of life. Our values often differ from values of other
countries due to cultural contrasts such as with religious, racial, and education issues. We give much
more freedom than many other countries do to those of different races and religions. Also, we hold
education in a much higher regard than other countries. It is these differences that sometimes make
our country seem more...show more content...
Individuals who visit Louisiana for the first time are sure to be amazed at the extremely different
culture of the Creoles. The Creoles eat food completely unique such as: jambalaya, crawfish, gumbo,
and shrimp et tu fait. The most significant difference in the Creole culture is the fact that they speak
Creole, which is a combination of French, English, and their own unique words.
Immigrants from foreign countries have and continue to move to America in search of a land in
which they have more freedom and better opportunities. By coming a citizen, they are granted the
same rights and privileges as those who were born and raised in the United States. They are granted
access to public schooling, healthcare, unemployment, welfare, and social security. The freedom that
comes with being an American means being able to decide what paths you would like to pursue
without government interference. Personal decisions such as which church to attend and which
religion to practice can be made without fear of persecution. Similarly, electing who we want to be
responsible for running the country is a choice that Americans have the privilege.
America is often referred to by immigrants as "the land of opportunity" Americans have the means at
their disposal to go from poverty to riches in a very short amount of time. There are many laws in
place in America that serve to secure the equal rights of Immigrants. Equal opportunity laws ensure

My American Experience
My American ExperienceAmerica is home to millions of people. I have lived my life in America
my entire sixteen years on this world, and have cherished every second of it. Through these
sixteen years, I have been able to establish my own thoughts and feelings on what the American
experience is about to me. I may have my own opinions, though others may disagree with them. I
cannot live the life of the millions of people living in America, nor can I explain the American
experience on their behalf through their experiences. My own interpretation is a product all the
experiences I have gone through growing up in America. As a child I was in the process of
developing my own character and learning new things. I grew up with the impression that You
can do anything you want if you put your mind to it. That is what America is all about the land of
dreams and opportunity. If I wanted to become a doctor, I could become one. There s nothing
stopping me from becoming president or anything else I want to be. But you don t become
president like that. It takes hard work and determination to accomplish anything, hence the phrase
if you put your mind to it. The path to success may not be an easy one, but only through hard work
and education can it be obtained. Some say we are slaves to society forced to spend our worthless
lives working nonstop. Perhaps one can make that case when referring to a country such as Russia,
where the people work for the success of the country with a communist

What Is An American Essay
Since this great country was first established many intuitive minds have tried to answer the
question; "What is an American". This country is full of individuals of many backgrounds, and
diversities and each person has a different opinion on this question. In my opinion, an American is
someone who values freedom and equality and pursues the "American dream." Every American
exercises these rights and these are great adjectives to describe our country. Each of the seven
readings, and the one image I compiled help mold this broader definition into a more precise
description of an American. Robert Creeley, an influential American writer and poet, lived the ideal
American dream. He wrote about his struggles early in his life. He lost his...show more content...
Americans set their standards to high compared to the rest of the world. They put themselves on a
pedestal too high for any other country to reach (James). Thus, the rest of the world and the
immigrants coming to America are inferior and are not capable of living the American dream.
Florence Mayers wrote a sestina in 1940 named All–American Sestina. He challenged American
pride and honor at a very crucial time in American history, and accused Americans of placing
more value on material goods then freedoms and values (Mayers, ). At that time the American
landscape and culture was molding into one that put more importance on material goods, and
that idea started to resemble the American Dream. These days Americans judge their success on
what kind of house they live in how many cars they own rather then how hard they work at their
jobs and how they live their lives. This idea is represented through all of the material goods in the
collage. For some the American dream is the value of hard work. To others it's a huge emphasis
on material possessions. So, the American dream is no longer the American dream. It is a dream
that anyone and everyone can relate to. This dream is the idea of having what ever you want. May
it be material goods, ideas and values, or freedoms and rights. This idea also represents the
uniqueness of America. It is a dream a lot of people around the world don't get to enjoy;

What Is an American Essay
What is an American Introduction Although the present day American is a totally a different
person, at the close of the Revolutionary War the same individual was a European immigrant
impacted by the nature of the American continent. In St. Jean de Crevecoeur's perspective, an
American is a race that results from a mixture of Swedes, Dutch, French, Irish, Scotch, and
Englishmen (48). This race consists of unique type of people who are not governed by laws as
strict as they experienced in Europe. They are a breed of people who had no home and no country
in Europe. This paper discusses what the American was thought to be, in view of St. Jean de
Crevecoeur's Letters from an American Farmer. The American St. Jean de Crevecoeur describes the

This is a society in which neither social class barriers nor economic class problems prohibit
interaction. Everyone is equal and the resources are shared equitably by everyone. In this society,
the rich and the poor are not that apart as in Europe, everyone is united by a mild government,
with everyone respecting the law and having no fear of power given that they are all equitable.
The American is a new man who is neither a European, nor his direct descendant. He is a strange
mix of blood which cannot be found in any other country. The American is described as a person
whose grandfather was an Englishman, his mother was Dutch and who has married a
Frenchwoman. The American is a person who has left behind all his ancient manners and
prejudices, and has received new ones from the mode of life he has embraced, the rank he holds
and the government he obeys. A person becomes an American after being received in the broad
lap of the great Alma Mater, and he becomes melted down into the new race of men whose
posterity and efforts could transform the world in the days to come. The Americans are the
pilgrims from the west who have carried a great mass of sciences, arts, industry, and vigor, which
began in the east. They were once scattered all over Europe but have been incorporated into one of
the best systems of inhabitants in the world. The American is a new person acting upon new
principles, forcing him to entertain new ideas and come up with new opinions. He was
