Students aside from doing school project also try to update with the celebrity gossips and visit the sites where they can easily find news about favorite
celebrities and reading magazines. Sometimes they are obsessed with glamorous life of celebrities that make them forget what they should do as

Introduction
Computer addiction can have a variety of negative effects on a person. The most immediate are social. The user withdraws from friends and family as
he spends more and more time on the computer. Relationships begin to wither as the user stops attending social gatherings, skips meetings with friends
and avoids family members to get more computer time. Even when they do interact with their friends, users may become...show more content...
It became more common to see computers in homes and businesses during the 1980s. This change meant more people were using computers, and
more people were becoming addicted to computer use. The idea of computer addiction became more pervasive in the 80's, and because of the social
atmosphere of the time, there was widespread use of drug and addiction metaphors describing obsessive use of computers (Reed, 2002, p. 137). In
fact, the PC is sometimes referred to as the "LSD of the 1980s" (ElmerâDeWitt, 1993, p. 63).
This research discusses about the effects, its signs and symptoms, of computer addiction to interpersonal relationship of the students and how they can

made. Even before the first electronic computers were made, many people believe that computers started with the abacus, a simple counting device.
The abacus is believed to have been built in Babylon in the fourth century B.C. The "First Generation" of computers started in the very late 1930 's.
These computers were grotesquely slow, colossal in size, created much heat, used hundreds of kilowatts of power, and were about as reliable as a used

Generation" of computers in 1947. Unfortunately, the 2nd Generation did not advance as much as

Technology today is progressing at an exponential rate with new devices being released practically daily. With each new invention comes new and
exciting possibilities as well as ever growing temptations and danger. One such pitfall many have fallen victim to is that of computer addiction.
Computer addiction can be defined as the obsessive use of computers that interferes with daily life. This addiction has been shown through many
activities over computers such as video gaming, chat rooms, and net surfing to just name a few. In order to truly understand what computer addiction is
one must understand the symptoms and motivations that lead one to become addicted. Computer addictions have been found in every race, gender, and

Psychologists agree that factors such as social influence, genetics, and low stress tolerant may also contribute to a person becoming addicted to video
games.
The symptoms of addiction are often misleading and unclear; this is very much the case of computer addiction. Computers are very much a part of
everyday life for a great number of people and it is often times difficult to tell when normal use becomes excessive to the point of interfering with an
individual's life. Dr. James Fearing has outlined ten symptoms of computer addiction, the first being a loss of control when trying to limit the amount
of time one spends on the computer. Another symptom Dr. Fearing describes is lying or minimizing the amount of time one spends on the computer.
Lying, hiding out on the computer during stressful times, mixed feelings of euphoria while engaged on the computer, an over developed sense of
importance for ones computer, and engaging in risky behavior under the anonymity of your computer are all symptoms off computer addiction (James
Fearing).
Computer addiction can have horrible effects on a person's life; cases of the pain it can inflict have been documented worldwide. One such instance
occurred in 2001 in Wisconsin. A young man by the name of Shawn Woolley became addicted to the MMO Everquest. After losing his job due to
calling out to play Everquest, Shawn was evicted from his apartment. With his mothers

Abstract Internet addiction (IA) is a new disorder described in 1996 by the psychologist Kimberly Young. The aim of this paper is to estimate the
percentage of IA among Greek university students. Results of a sample survey among 1876 Greek university students, 18â27 years old, are presented.
The questionnaire consisted of eight questions from Young's Diagnostic Test for Internet Addiction (YDTIA) as well as an inventory including

Although the term addiction was combined with technology in England before 1996 (Griffiths, 1995), and even earlier the term 'computer addiction'
had been used (Shotton, 1991), IA had been mentioned only as an informal phrase by Ivan Goldberg, MD in 1995 (Federwisch, 1997; YouTube,
2008), in order to describe excessive use of the Internet. However, it was not until 1996 when the psychologist Kimberly Young gave a first serious
account of this disorder, proposing diagnostic criteria and describing the collateral consequences of it on specific groups (Young, 1996a; 1998). The
major objections concerning this term were in the use of the word "addiction": although Young (1998) uses it to define the compulsiveness
accompanying this disorder, Internet addiction is also accompanied with underlying maladaptive cognitions, which would be better described
psychologically if the term 'problematic Internet use' was used (Davis, 2001; Beard and Wolf, 2001). Moreover, some researchers argue that a person's
overuse or abuse of the Internet is a behavioural manifestation of other things that may be problematic in their lives (Thatcher et al., 2008).
Nevertheless, the term Internet addiction is frequently used in scholarly journals, such as CyberPsychology & Behavior and Computers in Human
Behavior. In a recent attempt to metaâanalyse quantitative data on IA, Byun et al. (2009, p. 204) note that the matter of the definition of IA is the first

Technology has developed so much that it is almost crucial to have electronic devices at home. Our life has gotten so used to having technology

could also have negative effect on children, especially on teenagers. Parents usually buy computers for their children's educational resource. But
teenagers, who always seek fun activities around them, use computer to play games, chat with friends and to catch up with the latest gossip on

He took pathological gambling as diagnosed by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSMâIV) as his model for the description

Online activities which, if done in person, would normally be considered troublesome, such as compulsive gambling or shopping, are sometimes called
net compulsions. Others, such as reading or playing computer games, are troubling only to the extent that these activities interfere with normal life.
Supporters of disorder classification often divide IAD into subtypes by activity, such as excessive, overwhelming, or inappropriate pornography use,
gaming, online social networking, blogging, email, or Internet shopping. Opponents note that compulsive behaviors may not themselves be addictive.
Computer addiction is an idea that has been in existence for years. Since the 1970s, avid computer programmers and hackers have been called
"addicts" by both psychologists and the general public (Reed, 2002, p. 135). In 1976, Weizenbaum wrote about computer programmers who could sit
and work at their computer terminals for twenty or thirty hours at a time. This behavior however, was viewed at the time as useful to technology and
society. Computers, once seen as huge government machines that only very knowledgeable people could use, transformed into userâfriendly tools that
could be used by the everyday person. It became more common to see computers in homes and businesses

15. Time Vs. Computer Addiction
Time vs Computers Everyday lives are impacted by computers, and internet access. Many people across the globe rely on personal computers to
organize information, communicate with family, accomplish educational matters, and enjoy entertainment. Although, computers are a great tool to use,
there is a possibility of obsession or overuse of this technology. The overuse, or obsession can cause individuals to neglect others, as well as self. This
behavior can result to computer addiction. Obligations can be neglected, because too much time is spent on the computer. According to Wieland,
"Young claims there were 56 million internet users in 1997. Extrapolating from prevalence rates of other addictions, 5â10 percent of users will most
likely experience IAD." Young's survey suggest that too much time on the computer during the week and on weekends, adding to an average total of
40â78 hour per week, illustrates time not used to concentrate on mandatory work or home responsibilities. The psychological and social effect of IAD
(Internet Addiction Disorder) include spending excessive time on the internet and experiencing a compulsive desire to do this activity. (3) Symptoms
of Internet Addition include lack of attention to personal needs for proper food, hygiene. Sleep is interrupted due to the late hours until early mornings
hours spent on the computer/internet. Many people who are affected by this obsession, are decreasing physical activities, and socialization. (Wieland 2)

not an official psychiatric diagnosis. Despite a growing movement to have obsessive computer and internet use included in the Diagnostic and

In relative terms when disadvantages of computer addiction compared to other addictions such as alcoholism and drug addiction, computer addiction

Computer addiction can have a number of physical, social, and psychological effects on a person and it is to be taken as seriously as any other
addiction that a person is battling. One common physical effect computer addiction can have on a person are back problems. Sitting for so long can
take a toll on a person's muscles and can result in poor posture. Poor posture can result in chronic back problems that require the services of a

Tips on solving disadvantages of computer addiction
As with any addiction, steps can be taken to treat computer addiction. Limiting the amount of time spent on the computer or playing video games is a
simple step. If your computer is on all the time at home, switch it off.
Don't leave the computer near at hand. In order to prevent things from getting out of control, reassure that you understands that if you buy a computer,
you will have to respect some rules regarding its usage. The first and most important rule is establish a schedule for using the computer.
Develop a new passion that has nothing to do with computers. The disadvantages of computer addiction in mainly caused by a lack of activities or

"Modern technology is affecting our sleep. The artificial light from TV and computer screens affects melatonin production and throws off circadian

centre of many studies that show the negative effects of computers on everyone who uses this technology. Of course, computers can be useful as a
resource when used properly, however, just like a drug. Computers can be easily misused and abused. Leading to cases ofaddiction that are sometimes
far more unbelievable than cases from drug addiction. It has been shown that many workers who spend hours at a desk or computer can be the subject
of many long term health problems that can not be easily reversed. Computer access to the web allow for individuals struggling with a problem to vent
it out online, anonymously. This is a temporary solution and does not help the individual solve it in the long term. Causing the individual to continue to

With the introduction of computer and the Internet, a new world has opened to its users. People can not only do their work using the resources of the
computer, but also entertain themselves. It is also a great way of socializing as one can meet new people and make friends through online networking

because the Internet is loaded with information. However, like all good things, even the computer has certain disadvantages that can affect the users
negatively. As the popularity of computers and Internet increased, a new type of addiction also began to emerge which is called computer addiction.

25. Society's Addiction to Computers Essay
Over the past years, with the exponential advance in technology, computers have developed to be the leader of the world. Increasingly, computers are
