1) Lowell Elementary School in San Jose will replace all of its door handles with Hy-5, a self-sterilizing door handle invented by Choi Bomi, starting November 28, 2016 to improve hygiene and protect against the spread of bacteria and influenza.
2) Hy-5 uses UV light embedded in the handle to kill bacteria upon contact with the handle surface. Once released, the light sterilizes the surface. The school principal hopes this will reduce student absences due to illness.
3) The installation of Hy-5 handles at Lowell Elementary will take place over the Thanksgiving weekend and be ready for use when classes resume on November 28.

INNOVATIVE SELF-STERILIZING DOOR HANDLES GO IN AT LOWELL
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
SAN JOSE, Calif. – November 14, 2016 – Hy-5, the first self-sterilizing door handle
created by Choi Bomi, will replace all door handles in Lowell Elementary School in San Jose for
better hygiene on campus starting on November 28, 2016.
Choi Bomi, winner of a Red Dot Design Concept award, invented Hy-5 to protect
children from harmful bacteria and the spread of the new influenza virus which is transmitted by
hand contact.
Hy-5 uses UV light embedded in the handle to kill bacteria. Skin to light contact is
minimal when using the door handle as it turns off upon contact. Once the handle is released, the
light is activated, sterilizing the surface instantly.
Lowell Elementary School Principal, Melitta Nerhood, looks forward to seeing a decline
in the amount of student absences due to illness.
“Our students always seem to catch colds around this time of year, so I’m hoping these
new door handles will decrease the amount germs that spread,” said Nerhood.
Greg Davidson, Technical Specialist at Choi Bomi said, “Hy-5 has been evaluated for a
long time and it’s exciting to finally see it being adapted into the environment it was created for.”
2. The installation of Hy-5 in Lowell Elementary will happen over the Thanksgiving
weekend on November 25 through November 27 and will be ready for use when classes start
again on Monday.
Nerhood said staff, parents and students are eager to try out the new door handles to see if
Hy-5 will truly contribute to making their school safer and sanitary.
A germ-free school is non-existent, but when Hy-5 makes its way into more schools and
keeps children healthier, it will ultimately help prevent the spread of bacteria and disease.
