Letter from the Church Secretary
Dear all,
Writing this letter is a challenge and a responsibility, which I don't find
easy. So here we go.
In the Bible we read of people recognising 'Jesus of Nazareth'. Do
you ever get spotted as people say to you, 'Didn't I see you at the
Golf Club?' or 'Oh, I know you from the check out' or even 'I
recognise you but I'm not sure where from?' I have children spotting
me and calling me the hedgehog lady, much to their parents
embarrassment but I smile and say hello and recently I have been
recognised from 'Messy Church'. So what is in a name? Sometimes we
get nicknames which perhaps we'd prefer not to have but it is all to
do with recognition and association and even responsibility.
I wonder how many of us, possibly unknown to us, who on being
seen are thought of as Christians who attend Hayes Free Church.
What a huge responsibility we have then because we are a living
advertisement.
So this is a challenge to each and every one of us, as we step out
of our home, are we behaving in a way that we won’t mind being a
witness to Christ. Are we behaving as a Christian should, to each and
every person we meet?
So as we approach Easter let us be prepared to tell folk that Easter
isn't just eating chocolate eggs but we have a Saviour who was
willing to lay down His life for us and we can rejoice that He rose
again, Oh Happy Day.
Happy Easter to you all
Mavis

Women’s Contact Coffee Morning
We will be holding the next coffee mornings
from 10.00am to 12.00 noon in the Small Hall
on the 12th of March and the 9th of April.
We are continuing to raise monies to contribute to
disaster relief funds in different parts of the world.
We hope to see you at the Coffee Morning, and why not bring a friend?
Please note that the monies raised from the coffee mornings are
separate from those raised through the refreshments trolley after
Sunday morning services.

The Fairtrade Sunday Stall
We hold a fair trade stall after the morning service on the 2nd and 4th
Sunday of each month.
The stall will be held on the 13th and 27th of March.
Please continue to support your stall.
Also, don’t forget that Fairtrade Fortnight is around the corner. It will
run from the 29th February until 13th March. We will be participating in
the Big Brew during the last weekend of this event. Fair Trade
Fortnight’s theme is “Hunger destroys lives”. In countries, such as
Bangladesh families spend as much as 70% of their income on food,
leaving only 30% for healthcare, shelter, education and the other
necessities for life.
Richard and Barbara.
Editor’s Notes
I am repeating last month’s notes. However, you are invited to make
some new contributions to Catalyst: -
1) At her last service, Sue suggested that you send in prayers for
inclusion in Catalyst. Your prayers will be most welcome.
2) The way things once were is concentrating on wartime food
recipes.
Also, owing to other events and meetings, some of the regular church
organisation meetings have been shuffled around to accommodate
things. I trust I have caught all of the changes, if not please accept
my apologies and listen out for announcements.

This Is My Prayer
Bless me. heavenly Father,
Forgive my erring ways
Grant me strength to serve Thee
Put purpose in my days
Grant me understanding
Enough to make me kind
So I may judge all people
With my heart and not my mind
And teach me to be patient
In everything I do
Content to trust Your wisdom
And to follow after You
And help me when I falter
And hear me when I pray
And receive me in Thy Kingdom
To dwell with Thee some day.

A letter from the Chartwell Cancer Trust
Transcribed
Thursday, 14 January 2016
Dear Christine,
Thank you so much for your fantastic donation I would take the
opportunity to explain where the £5000.00 will go.
Since 2005 our aim has been to supply funding to cover the costs of
additional staff in the Cancer Units at the Princess Royal University
Hospital. The CCT has grown hugely over the years and with the
support of our amazing supporters we can now help in other ways
too. It could be anything from funding extra doctors, nurses, research
fellows or equipment that improves the patients and visitors
experience at such a difficult time.
We have just funded the refurbishment at the Chartwell Unit at the
Princess Royal with the result of creating additional space for visitors
at the patient’s bedsides, and air conditioning has been installed
throughout the unit. Although it has been a great challenge to raise
the money with the overwhelming support we have received from
you and all our supporters the works are now complete.
Additionally alongside our support for the Chartwell Unit, we now also
fully support The Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group
(B.C.C.S.G) in all of their work with children in our area undergoing
treatment for cancer or leukaemia. Our new CCT Tiger Trust has
provided a new kitchen for patients and staff in the Tiger Ward,
Woolwich allowing them to do washing and make refreshments
through the night without leaving their sick children. The Tiger Ward
provides treatment for up to 80 young children struggling with cancer
from our local area. We have agreed to provide new televisions and
to provide funding for a Health Care Assistant in the Unit. Last year the
nurses themselves had to find the money for the children’s Christmas
gifts, while Great Ormond Street were turning gifts away because of
oversupply by well-intentioned local businesses. It is our aim to
elevate the facilities and financial support of the Tiger Ward to rival
Great Ormond Street; we think that the children in our area deserve
the same level of care.
Our Charity is growing year by year and we are continually increasing
the level of support we provide. We keep in touch with our
fundraising partners and have made many good friends over the last
few years.
We will soon be starting our Early Warning Coffee Mornings ~ Spend
time over a wine. Its aim is to circulate a booklet that highlights the
early signs of cancer, alongside some of the children journeys, whilst

raising money either over a coffee morning or a wine evening. We will
let you know more soon.
The staffs, our supporters, patients and all of the Trustees of the CCT
are truly grateful for your support. THANK YOU.
Yours Sincerely,
The Chartwell Cancer Trust

Commitment for Life
Last year I included in Catalyst a short article on the aforementioned
collection being undertaken by URC churches, the monies collected
going towards a number of designated countries abroad which
desperately needed funds in many cases just to survive.
Many thanks to those who contributed and for those who forgot all
about it, it is still not too late to do so. The special collection envelopes
to be used I will leave at the rear of the church. Just put in your
contribution at the same time as your usual offering in the church
collection. ASAP please so our treasurer can forward all the monies
donated.
Please also read the article in this issue of our magazine about the
countries helped by our collections and use the information to help
base the decision which has to be made at the next church meeting as
to where our monies should be sent.
Many thanks Mike Duke
It is only possible to report on 4 countries in this issue. To refresh your
memory with more details on what is going on in all the countries
please see information contained in Catalyst dated October 2015.
Central America
Guatemala – poverty has risen by 2% in the past 5 yrs. A huge
inequality exists between urban and rural areas and indigenous and
non-indigenous populations. Many indigenous people live in rural areas
and here due to poor infrastructure communities lack access to
services such as education and health. This is reflected in rural rates of
literacy being only 36% with only 14% completing primary school
Continued on the next page ......

education. For example one young girl aged 12 years named
Jacqueline who satisfactorily completed education at primary level
cannot go on to further education due to travel costs and her parents
cannot afford for her to live away from home.
As for health, malnutrition is 70% for under the 5s in many areas with
many suffering irreversible physical and mental growth.
The government it must be said has much to blame for this situation
prioritising other items which they think more important. The support
agencies assisted by monies collected by this collection provide relief
to some of those affected.
El Salvadore- Women who suffer a miscarriage can face imprisonment
for murder. No recourse to legal advice and time imprisoned for up to
40 years. Poor harvests in 2013 and 2014 have added to the plight of
these people.
Bangladesh
Floods have been rife in many places taking away vital crops as we
have seen on the TV news. Over the years paddy fields have gradually
been replaced by shrimp farms which unfortunately poison the land .
As the water recedes in places villagers return to their villages from the
embankments on which they have lived for 3 months following the
floods.
Christian Aid partner Shushilan has been working giving emergency aid
and is helping build community forums and help villagers find ways to
lessen the impact of the flooding.
Zimbabwe
A report from a Jesuit priest — We are still waiting for the rains which the
meteorologists warn us are most unlikely and are talking of a record
drought. Waiting too for an old man to retire or go to his reward, with
no certainty about what will follow that. A programme of daily 18 hour
power cuts was announced recently, but some days we are getting
electricity all day. If little rain the turbines on the dam will be unable to
operate. We have two schools with 1500 children, the water supply is
unpredictable and a borehole is in use to provide water, with the
municipal water rare , either green or brown in colour smelling bad.
Some people use some kind of well right here in town ,some with hand
pumps, some electric. END
P.S. from Linda Mead- URC Co-ordinator, Commitment for Life
Thank you for your hard work and the contributions made which make
this work possible.

24. Flower Fragrance
Green-hearted winter snowdrop,
symbol of God's renewing love,
turn your face to the sun,
as the days lengthen
and he sets his face to go to Jerusalem.
Pale yellow hosanna trumpet of spring,
accompany him on his journey,
and as your shining petals brighten our day,
help us to sense his presence in our darkness,
his suffering in the agony of the world.
Flower fragrance of anointed love,
fill our house, our hearts, our world,
with the life-giving news of Easter.
