1. CHAPTER; 13 GET YOURSELF A MENTOR
We have all travelled before, don’t we always ask for the time needed for the
journey ? how far the journey will be? if it’s first time for example do we ever
hesitate to ask for directions?
A mentor is like that navigator that takes you through life, making sure you
don’t swerve away from that great life you desire, helping you remain
focussed and obviously giving you the necessary instructions to apply for
your own benefits, so many reasons of what mentors can do to you, he/she
with an open heart, gives you an experience you have never personally
walked in, in other terms, he/she gives you both sides of life; the bad and
the good so that from there you may make wise decisions .
Achieving what you desire will realistically depend on whom we have
engaged with as our navigator well known as your mentor.
“Many hands and hearts and minds generally contribute to anyone’s
notable achievements’’ –Walt Disney
Walt Disney in his quote brought to light that anything we wish and have
already attained will clearly have a trace of many life inputs from other
people we met in time.
How do I select a good mentor, what life path do I really want? Who is a
mentor for in my life?
Above are many questions that we could ask, everyone at any stage of life
obviously has had thought about such before. We all need a mentor,
particularly to unlock what we need, a mentor in that area would be of great
importance. Most people today, young and old are caught in between as
result not many are happy with where they are but obviously no one was
engaged with them, life is more challenging journeying it alone.
Possible criteria for selecting your life mentor
Have similar interests
A mentor should have common grounds with you, he/she should proudly
look forward to seeing you successful. Whatever area you so wish to unlock,
you need a mentor with that skill and knowledge in your area of interest for
better results. You are likely to spend much time with your mentor, if not so
how then will he help you if what you’re aspire to do is totally different from
what he is giving you?
Accessible and available
2. Today people have mentors they have never met and seen, a mentor should
be easy to locate and speak to. If you can’t meet him, at least reach him with
an email, phone call, social media or any possible means available to use.
Mentorship is serious business and each parties must bring that to
attention. Some friends I met up in tertiary education, good and intelligent
lost focus the very time there mentors moved out of their lives.
He should be above you in skill
For more benefits a mentor should be ahead of you in one thing or the other,
something that will give you a reason to engage with him/her. Thank God, I
have people who follow me or look up to me as their mentor but in areas
specific? Preaching of the gospel.
Experience
He should be willing to leave no stone turned down when it comes to teach
or dealing with your life. His bad times and good times should give you a
basis for better decisions like it is well known, experience is the best
teacher! He should give you an expatriate skill. Life is simple and
meaningful when you do little and harvest much it occurs only with a
mentor in your life.
Ministers of God’s word
Ministers of the gospel of Jesus are to me best mentors ever, your local
pastor/priest/reverend etc. could be a great mentor to you, what you just
have to establish is, are you willing to follow and submit to that person?
Most people have a wrong view that a mentor will step on them, restrict and
be jealous of you, on the contrary I have found countless reasons to be
under my mentor who is spiritual especially for ministry. Find the person
who can keep you moving to what you really want to unlock for yourself in
life.
Mentee’s benefits from a good mentor
Mistakes are minimised; I have met a lot people full of regrets, young
people destroying their own future in drinking, theft and premarital
sex , as a result they cannot perform as they really should only
because, no one was there to coach and evaluate their lives.A mentor
helps you through.
Your abilities are quickly identified; it’s another thing to be skilled and
it’s another to be appreciated, a mentor is first to notice your progress.
Maturity is faster; A mentor checks through your behaviour and
character .
3. Motivation; we need stimulation inwardly, a mentor provides that
atmosphere you need.
Inspiration; energy flows much to what you are committed to do in
fact when you look at the success of others, you are elevated to do
better than what they have done.
Correction: I have noticed that people who hate to be corrected and
disciplined often have temporal success. Proverbs 12 vs. 1 asserts that
it is stupid to hate correction.
Discipline: someone should be there to institute discipline in you,
though not necessarily in terms of brutality like police men/women
do, it simply mean to be accountable of what you are doing.
