2. Planting the Seed
Zorn’s started in 1940, on the then farmland that
is the Hempstead Turnpike in Bethpage, Long
Island. It started out as a mini retail store selling
fresh turkeys to the public. Slowly, its product
range expanded, adding farm fresh eggs, sweet
butter, baked breads, and others staples that the
people then were requesting, until it grew to
what it is now—a restaurant, catering service, deli and fresh produce
market.
In the late 40’s, Zorn’s began introducing
rotisserie chickens cooked over an open flame
in barbecue ovens, which instantly became a
hit for the busy folks. It became a pioneer in the
retail takeout food business, expanding its
menu then to include fresh homemade salads
and others fresh dishes to compliment the
rotisserie chicken. It then continued to grow, adding more cooked meals like
the now famous southern fried chicken, barbecued spareribs, and more.
Complete takeout meals and catering were relatively new concepts back
then, but that didn’t keep Zorn’s from thriving.
3. Continuing the Growth
Now, over six decades and three generations later, Zorn’s is still managed
by the same family and still offers hundreds of freshly made items. The
store continues its tradition of using only the same recipes, cooking
methods, homegrown produce, and spices used by the current owner’s
grandparents. The store says that although some food services look down
upon them as old-fashioned compared to the standards of today, their
commitment to their roots is what maintains their high quality and
consistency.
