DEEPEN: DEFINING NEW WORDS
Questions:
● Where do you see this?
● What is this called?
Very good! This is called a Dictionary.
What about this one?
Are you familiar with the book?
Good job! This one is called Thesaurus.
Questions:
● When do we use these books?
● Do you think these books are important? Why?
Alright, for you to have a deeper understanding, let us define what is
a Dictionary and Thesaurus.
5. TEACHING-LEARNING PLAN FOR SYNCHRONOUS SESSION
S.Y. 2021-2022
● What is a dictionary?
● A dictionary is a reference source in print or electronic form containing words usually
alphabetically arranged along with information about their forms, pronunciations,
functions, etymologies, meanings.
For example:
con·tent1
/kənˈtent/ - in a state of peaceful happiness.
● Thesaurus
● A thesaurus is a reference work that lists the synonyms and sometimes
antonyms of words.
● Synonyms are words with similar meanings, and antonyms are words
with opposite meanings.
● The word 'thesaurus' comes from Greek, and it means 'treasure,' so we
can think of a thesaurus as a treasury of words that can help us better
Reference book listing alphabetically the words of one language and
showing their meanings or translations in another language.
A book giving information on particular subjects or a particular
class of words, names, or facts are usually arranged
alphabetically.
Can someone give words and their definitions that can be located
in a dictionary?
Thank you very much for your example/s!
Now let us proceed to our next book, what is it called again?

understand the meanings of those words and use them more effectively
and efficiently in our writing.
Let us see what a thesaurus looks like,
Using an online dictionary, you can look up a word in the time it takes to type it, as
opposed to taking the time to flip pages and scan through a page of words in a print
dictionary.
What is the difference between a dictionary and a thesaurus?
Technology is changing the face of dictionaries.
A hard-copy dictionary is still a great backup if you’re unable to get
online, and it can lead to some surprising discoveries of other words
on the same page, just as browsing through a shelf of library books
can put you in contact with books you might not have otherwise
encountered.
The important issue is that you use a dictionary of some kind and that
you understand what it can provide for you.

DETERMINE: LESSON SYNTHESIS
Dictionaries and thesauruses provide writing assistance for writers of all levels of experience
and ability. Think of them as tools that will help you to do your very best writing. A dictionary
can help you determine the precise denotations of words, while a thesaurus, used responsibly,
can help you to capture subtle differences in the connotations of words.
DISCERN:
As a Paulinian, how can the dictionary, thesaurus and reliable online resources help you in
developing resourcefulness and creativity?
DEVOTE:
+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now
and will be forever. Amen.
Mary, our Mother and model, pray for us.
St. Paul, Our patron, pray for us.
Fr. Louis Chauvet and our first sisters, intercede for us.
May the charity of Christ impel us, now and forever. Amen.
+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
