1. REFLECTION
Macbeth Dramatization was a task given by Madam Ashikin this year as our coursework. She is evaluating our skill as a group and many other characteristics. We, 2 PPISMP TESL took the challenge in positive ways by producing an excellent quality of drama presentation. We were required to produce different version of drama. As for my class TESL 1, we chose the Vampire version to be dramatized. The committee members were chosen last year and I was trusted to hold the post as the Director. I had never conducted or participated in a drama before but I took the responsibility despite the lack of experience. The drama had taught me much valuable knowledge that cannot be gained simply. The best knowledge I learnt was how to be a good leader. To be a good director, it takes a lot of special traits. For instance, we should possess a good charisma to charm our actor to perform and turn up during practice. As a teacher to be, the charismatic traits have to be polished from now as we are going to teach in front of the young and fresh mind in the elementary school in the future. Other than that voice projection is one of the wisdom that I gain during the dramatization workshop. Voice projection is essential not only in dramatization also in teaching as voice is the medium for all teachers to deliver their knowledge to the students. Good voice projections help the students to understand and absorb the input well. Not only is that dramatization itself a good knowledge as it help in the classroom while we teach in the future. It offers wide variety of literacy is use and tremendous positive effects on literacy development, academic success, and social interaction. In the Theatre Arts Conference 2011 in Singapore it was mentioned that theatre has the power to move the heart, mind and body, allowing us to see different points of view and immerse ourselves in multiple ways of thinking and living, meaning drama is useful as a teaching tools for the teacher to extract their mind and thought. All the knowledge that I gained in this drama is not valuable as the experience that I gained throughout the dramatization with my friends. It helped me to learn how to work with others in the future. I agree with Professor Kim James Bey, that we have to encourage a “We” mentality vs. a “Me” mentality.
The position I hold in the TESL 1 Macbeth Dramatization is the director, meaning I have to make many decision that will affect the entire dramatization. The first decision I made was selecting the high committee for TESL 1. However it was a democratic decision where we were voting and taking advice and suggestion from other members. It was very useful and effective because there are some volunteer to take the position. Next, I decided to divide the work with the members, for example, I trusted my costume designer to design the costume that we were dramatized. It is important to give them some space for them to spoke their ideas. I learned to trust people and respect their hard work. Although I am giving them space to voice out their ideas, I have to make the decision if it is appropriate with the theme that we have selected. As a director, making precise decision will give a better output in the future. My decision not only to decide costume, but the backdrop, make up, sound, lighting, prop and the most important is the stage direction and the actor that playing for the scene that will affect the entire play. My roles as director not only focus on the dramatization but also focus on the scrapbook. Deciding the cheapest materials to used in the scrapbook that within our budget range also one of my job. As for my class, we are collecting only RM 50 per person. All the action and decision making was diplomatic all the advice from the members was considered. As a teacher trainee we are going to get involve with other people and taking action and decision diplomatically was the best way. Not only that, knowledgeable about certain fields of work also contribute because by having certain knowledge we know better between right or wrong. In the classroom, we should know whether the students saying the truth or the idea given by them are beneficial to others.
This dramatization had made me a better person and more mature in making decision as well as cooperating with others. Mindset that I am not alone was set in my mind. My classmate and friends had helped me to achieve the goal and become a better person. My way of thinking has changed from making decision on my own to taking other people advice and idea. The dramatization had made me more diplomatic person.
.
