Game sense approach to teaching pdhpe!
1. A Game Sense approach to teaching
Physical Education
2. Game Sense as a PE (Physical Education) teaching approach
Game Sense: What is it?
The Benefits of using Game Sense as a teaching approach
The implementation of it during PE: Diamond Cricket
3. In PE classes, Game Sense (GS) will be used to teach Physical Education.
It is gradually becoming a preferred approach to teaching sports (Pill, 2014).
GS, also known as ‘designer games’, is based on changing the rules of a game.
For example, with a game of soccer, rules will be changed to suit the desired
outcome.
Students communicate the rules of the game and with the guide of the teacher, a
consensus is achieved and the game is thus modified + rules are changed.
4. Game-based, involves in-direct teaching/coaching, student-centred
It has four pedagogical features:
1. Creating the learning environment, for example setting the oval with cones
2. Starting conversation by asking questions.
3. Providing opportunities for students to collaborate.
4. Developing an inclusive and supportive socio-moral environment.
(Light, 2013)
5. In Austin, Haynes and Miller (Cited by Pill, 2014) teachers used the fundamental
movement skill (FMS) of kicking. FMS are the building blocks necessary for a wide
variety (NSW Department of Education and Training, 2000).
Students begin to develop a growth in interpersonal relationships, empathy and
understanding
Dialogue between students and students and teachers. Beneficial as Communication
is a necessary skill in the HPE K-6 Syllabus. The structured verbal interactions makes
a significant implication on the learning process.
Makes PE fun as games are modified and made challenging, resulting in a motivation
to learn PE.
An understanding of the intellectual aspects of a game (problem-solving)
6. Diamond Cricket
A typical game of Diamond Cricket needs 1
ball, 4 bats and 4 sets of stumps
Class is divided into 2 groups of about 12
One team is the batting team and the other
is the fielding team
Specific rules are set out in typical Diamond
Cricket game. With Game sense approach,
rules are modified: for example, using either
overarm or underarm bowling, players
become out if a fielder catches the ball in
one hand after one bounce
