The men’s professional tennis tour, now known as the Association ofTennis
Professionals (ATP), first introduced a computerized ranking system in 1973,
shortly after the merger of the professional and amateur tours. Just three years
later, Australian Mark Edmondson would win the 1976Australian Open while
ranked No. 212 in the world, becoming the lowest-ranked player ever to win a
major title, a distinction he holds to this day.
The ’76 AustralianOpen was just the third major event of Edmonson’s career,
after losing in the opening round of the previous year’s AustralianOpen and
advancing to the second round at the 1975Wimbledon Championships.
Edmondson began his campaign on shaky ground, coming back from a two-
sets-to-one deficit in the first round to win in five sets. He quickly gained
momentum, however, eliminating No. 5 seed Phil Dent and No. 12 Brian Fairlie
in two relatively straightforward four-set matches.
3. Mark Edmondson
• Edmondson’s form continued to improve as the tournament wore on,
and he scored a straight-sets victory at the expense of No. 13 Dick
Crealy in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, however, Edmondson
would face his toughest test, No. 1 Ken Rosewall, a winner of eight
grand slam titles and 15 pro slam titles. Undaunted, Edmondson took
the match. In the final, Edmondson met John Newcombe, seeded No.
2. As was the case throughout the tournament, Edmondson played
better as the match progressed, eventually clinching the title.
Edmondson would again reach the Australian Open quarterfinals in
1977 and 1979 and the semifinals in 1981, to go along with a run to the
Wimbledon semifinals in 1982. Otherwise, he rarely advanced past the
second or third round of major events and achieved a career-high
ranking of No. 15, six years after his lone major win. Edmondson is the
last Australian to win a men’s singles title at the Australian Open.
