On the occasion of Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte's official visit to Korea, the Netherlands donated 220 bicycles to Seoul Metropolitan Government. This is a report on the bicycle donation project.
2. What Happened?
• The Netherlands donated public bicycles to Seoul Metropolitan
Government on the occasion of the Prime Minister of the
Netherlands Mark Rutte’s visit to Korea.
• The number of donated bicycles is 220.
• Donation was made based on the support of Dutch business
community in Korea, which are Dutch corporations in Korea e.g.
ING, Philips.
3. How and When?
• It was Embassy’s initiative to donate bicycles to Seoul
Metropolitan Government for its use for Seoul Public Bike Rental
System ‘Ddareungyi’.
• Donation ceremony took place on 28 September 2016 during the
Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte’s visit to Korea, as a
sub-program of his visit to and meeting with the Mayor of Seoul
Mr. PARK,Won Soon.
• Manufacturing of 220 bicycles is currently in progress and will be
finished in early December 2016. From that point on the bicycles
will be available for the citizens of Seoul.
4. Why Bicycles?
• Bicycle is a common point of interest that both the Netherlands
and the city of Seoul have.
• It represents the environment-friendly and sustainable
development, a healthy lifestyle and green energy, which are the
values the Netherlands consider highly important.
• Seoul Metropolitan Government has been trying to expand its
public bike rental system with priority since its launch in 2015.
• It is a nice gesture to support Seoul’s idea to make the city
greener and to improve the life quality of the citizens of Seoul. At
the same time, it is a great Holland Branding opportunity to reach
out the broader public as the eco-friendly and green country.

Backwheel rim and mudguards are colored in orange to
symbolize the Netherlands. The symbol of Seoul Public Bike
includes Dutch national flag.
7. Symbol
Symbol combining ‘Seoul Bike’ Logo and Dutch National Flag
(with NL in the middle) stands for the bond of friendship and
cooperation between the two parties.
