• Trade:
• The economy of the state of Jammu and Kashmir is essentially agrarian in character. Most of the workforce of the state is engaged in
agriculture, horticulture, sericulture, apiculture, forestry and goats and sheep rearing. Consequently, the state exports a large variety of agro-
based and forest-based products. Being poor in basic minerals, the import consists of metallic goods, machinery, iron, chemical products,
electric goods, fibres, clothes and apparels.

• The main commodities of imports in the state of Jammu and Kashmir include machinery, iron steel, metals, electric goods, petroleum, petroleum products,
synthetic fibres, rubber, fertilizers, tea, paper, sugar, rice, wheat, oilseeds, groundnut, coal-tar, dyes, crockery (all sorts), drugs and medicines, coal, citrus fruits,
vegetables, pulses, leather goods, vehicles, spare motor parts, edible oils, milk powder, stationery, salt, spices, living animals (sheep and goats), military goods,
LPG, sports goods, fodder and chemicals.
6. The people of Jammu and Kashmir in general and that of the Valley of Kashmir are largely dependent on imported food (sheep,
goats, wheat, rice, pulses, milk powder, tea, sugar and clothes etc.). The state is not self-reliant even in the case of food and gen-
eral provisions.

• In Tamil Nadu, the Highways & Minor Ports Department (HMPD) is
primarily responsible for construction and maintenance of roads
including national highways, state highways and major district roads.
HMPD was established as Highways Department (HD) in April 1946 and
subsequently renamed on 30 October 2008.It operates through seven wings
namely National Highways Wing, Construction & Maintenance Wing,

TAMIL NADU
• The Southern Railway (abbreviated SR), headquartered
at Chennai, is one of the 18 zones of Indian Railways. It is the
earliest of the 18 zones of the Indian Railways created in
independent India. It was created on 14 April 1951 by merging
three state railways, namely, the Madras and Southern
Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway Company, and
the Mysore State Railway. The South Indian Railway was
originally created in the British colonial times as Great
Southern India Railway Co founded in Britain in 1853 and
registered in 1859. Its original headquarters was
in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) and was registered as a company
in London only in 1890. At present, after re-organization of
existing railway zones and creation of new zones undertaken
by the Indian Railways between 2002–03, Southern Railway
has emerged as the 4th largest zone after undertaking some
gauge conversion projects and creation of new lines.[2]

• The Jammu–Baramulla line[1] is a railway
track being laid to connect the Kashmir
Valley in the Indian union territory
of Jammu and Kashmir with Jammu
railway station and thence to the rest of the
country. The 356 km railway track will start
from Jammu and end at Baramulla.[2] It
comes under the jurisdiction of the Firozpur
railway division of Indian
Railways' Northern zone. The 359 m
(1,178 ft) tall Chenab Bridge lies on this
line, which once completed will be the
tallest railway bridge in the world. [3]

• Kakinada-Puducherry canal stretch (767km) along
with Godavari River stretch (171km) between
(Bhadrachalam and Rajhamundry) and Krishna
River stretch(157km) between (Wazirabad and
Vijaywada) is termed as NW-4.Total length of NW-
4 is 1095 km. A network of irrigation cum
navigation canal linking Chennai and Ennore Ports
in Tamil Nadu with the Kakinada Port,and Ma-
chlipatnam Ports in Andhra Pradesh runs through a
distance of 618 kms. The Kakinad canal and Eluru
canal and Commamur canal which are irrigation
cum navigation canal also interlink the two major
river systems of Godavari and Krishna. The
Buckingham canal which interlinks the Commamur
canal with Chennai port runs through a distance of
315 Km is tidal.
