INTRODUCTION
1.1 The Background of the Study
According to
Fromklin and
Rodman (1983:265)
jargon is a set of
words that is used in
conceivable science,
profession, trade, and
occupation.
A language of a group
must be different
from another group.
Even so the
languages are used
in Warung Budaya.
They have their own
styles.
The researcher is interested
in conducting this study
because she thinks that it is
important to know more
about jargon and the
meaning of it in coffee shop
especially for the students
who join organization and
like to have conversation in
coffee shop.

in Warung Budaya?

4. 1.3 The Significant of the
Study
Theoretically, the finding of this study aims to give more explanation and the
examples about jargon.
Practically, this study is expected useful for the students of English Department who
want to know and understand the languages in social and regional variety

In sociolinguistic, there are some contents to be learned by the students such as Slank,
Gender, Language Variation (slang, jargon, argot, cant, colloquial, register, and style),
Language Policy, Sign Language, Regional Dialectology, Bilingualism and etc.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
2.1 Language and Society
According to Wardhaugh (2006: 1) “a society is any group of people who become a very
comprehensiveconcept”. Furthermore, “a language is what the members of a particular
society speak” (Wardhaugh, 2006: 1)
2.2 Language Variation
According Hudson (1996, p. 22) language variation is ‘a set of linguistic items with similar
distribution. A variety can therefore be something greater than a single language as well
as something less.

According to Caudle et al jargon is an aspect of everyone life in some way be it a job, a
hobby or a sport. Jargon is a way for groups in society to have their own specifics
language.
The characters of Jargon:
Jargon used in informal situation
Jargon usually in the form of abbreviation
Create a new vocabulary
Jargon is always change and not lasting
Jargon can make the person easier to communicate with their fellows
Meaning of Jargon:
According to Fleishman (2005), doublespeak is a form of jargon often used to mislead or confuse
listener.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
3.1 The Research Design
According to Ary (2006: 470), research design is the researcher’s plan of how to proceed to gain
an understanding of some group or some phenomenon in its natural setting. Research can be
classified into two types: qualitative and quantitative research.
According to McMillan (in Kusdiningsih, 2002), qualitative Research stresses a
phenomenological model in which reality meaning through narratives and obese

To avoid misunderstanding about this study, the researcher took research subject in order
to get a clearer picture about this study. According to McMillan (1992), research subject is
an individual who participates in study or someone from whom the data are collected.
3.3 Research Instrument
Ary (2006: 32) states that document focuses on analyzing and interpreting record
within its own context. The material of document may be public records, textbooks,
letters, films, tapes, diaries, themes, reports, and so on. In this research, the researcher
collected register used by the activists of Muhammadiyah Students Association by: (1)
Participant Observation; (2) Semi Structured Interview
9. 3.4 Data Collection
The observation was done as in the following steps:
A. Entering the coffee shop and observing the activists conversations.
B. Listening and writing the activists conversations.
The interview was done as in the following steps:
A. Recording the activists’ conversations by using tape recorder.
B. Beginning the interview by asking some questions to the activists.
3.4 Data Analysis
The procedures in analyzing the data were as follows:
1. Transcribing the data. The data that had been collected were transferred and written
down on paper in order to ease the analysis
2. Classifying the data. After the data were completely transcribed, the researcher
started selected through each data in order to find out the jargon used in
conversations and it forms
3. Analyzing the data. The researcher analyzed the data that have been classified and
finally concluded what she found out from the data
