This document is a portfolio by Haamid Amjad containing reflections on architectural projects completed during their BSC in Architectural Technology. It includes sections on their thought process, background, and reflections on projects from years 1 and 2, including a visitors center at a reservoir and manor lodge. For early projects, they wish they knew software like Revit to better visualize designs, and one project they struggled with focus, though they liked the design concepts. Later projects they enjoyed more for documenting their design process more clearly.

3. My Thought Process
I created this graphic to explain to a
friend of mine who studies games
development how the design process I
carry out in my head cannot be properly
shown in a linear presentation.
The graphic shows the starting point,
large back circle at the left, and the five
primary constituents of a complete
building: Exterior design, Interior Layout
& Design, Environmental Technologies,
Lighting and Internal Climate (Top to
Bottom). The graphic to me shows the
various points where ideas intersect and
part which leads finally to the creation of
a generic workable concept. This system
of considering multiple options almost
simultaneously is always the start of my
design process and never the easiest to
represent.

4. About Me
My name Is Haamid Amjad and I’m from a town in west
Yorkshire called Dewsbury,
I have always had an interest in making and creating objects
and systems, that are unique to me. This probably began
from watching my father often working on our old house.
He would fix things that broke and along side my mother
would often do ‘weekend projects’ finding something to
make the house nicer and easier to live in. I eventually
grew up in this type of atmosphere helping my dad until a
point where I was capable of creating my own projects, and
began expanding the house, with one of my main projects
of the summer of 2011 being a 6m x 4m workshop. This is
where my interest in architecture began. I was 15 years
old, and had designed and constructed (with help) my own
workshop, and this experience truly put into perspective
that it was possible, all I had to do was dream it, draw it,
build it.

Looking back at my
4 A1 page portfolio
for AT1a I can
definitely say my
level of output has
significantly
improved. However
I only wish I knew
how to use tools
such as Revit, to
really visualise my
design concepts.
Referring to the
Image at the
bottom of the
page, this design
does make me
reminisce the time
I could afford to
draw trees with
such detail.

Amongst my
favourite ever
projects, academic
and non academic;
The Damflask
Reservoir Visitors
centre was among
the projects where I
found my designing
process, it was the
first project that I
incorporated special
floor planning into
my design process
as well as slowly
edging towards a
more in depth
background to my
design influences.
Although there is
little improvement I
would make on the
overall design, I
would change my
presentation now,
considerably.

My AT2a project is
likely my least referred
back to project. From
the beginning of the
semester I was very
out of focus and I
could see this in my
work. It took till almost
the middle of the
semester for me to
create a workable
concept. And although
I would say I liked the
technologies and
principles behind my
design as well as the
geometric shape, I was
not satisfied with my
output. I feel like I did
what was necessary
however because our
design brief was
mainly focused on the
technology of the
structure, and so was
my presentation. I
would not say I was
wholly disappointed
with the concept.

My most recent
project the visitors
centre at manor
lodge, again a
favourite like the
Damflask Visitors
Centre I think the
reason why I like
this design so much
is my initial thought
process. To begin
my intent was to
attempt to
document every
leading idea which
was the cause of my
final design; even
though this wasn’t
always possible, I
feel as if I collated
my ideas in such a
way that the process
is still presented
with sufficient
clarity.
