Chapter 5
Definition
 Honesty is the quality of being truthful,
straightforward, and sincere.
 Loyalty “a strong commitment to protecting
the interests of another person”. So what it
means to be loyal really depends on how those
interests are interpreted.
 Some people might say, loyalty is
unquestioning obedience and support for
whatever views I espouse

Engineering Ethics in Research
 Honesty:
1. In the level of investigation and
understanding, honesty is necessary
particularly in approaching the searched
problem.
2. In the level of reporting, honesty is
necessary in reporting the result.
Engineering Ethics in Research
 Hardworking
Commitment and continuity of the search. This means to
be dedicated to your research and intention to find out
the truth.
 Sincerity and good intention:
Your intention should be the find out the truth and
contribute to the human knowledge and progress.
Ethical requirements for Engineers at work Place
 Engineering Work place is the company firm, where
engineers deal with machines and human beings,
involving external and internal relationships with client,
employees and co-workers.
Ethical requirements for Engineers at work Place
 Between Engineer and Manager
There is on going debate among Professionals on the
relationship between managers and engineers.
Is manager and engineer are synonymous terms?
In other words is every engineer a manager or every
manager is engineer?
Between Engineer and Manager
 In the Generic sense, an engineer can be a manager,
but a manager cannot be an engineer.
 in the level of decision making normally engineer is
concern about the quality of the product, while non-
engineering manager is concern about marketing
position of the product in the business world.
Between Engineer and Manager
 In the level of authority and legality manager of the
organization normally overrules engineers, and even
sometimes if shortcoming are there in the company
engineers are blamed.
 Managers normally concentrate on rewords and
privileges, while engineers concentrate on the practical
side of the company.
Between Engineer and Manager
 Engineers pay more attention to the engineering details,
while managers pay more attention to the broader issues,
such as the relation of the company to the government.
 Engineering normally deal with machines and systems,
while managers normally deal with people.
Islamic managerial ethics
 According to the Islamic perspective of Management,
there are three interrelated portions of managerial
ethics with regard to the administration and
management.
 First, is the ethics towards work structure.
 Second, is the ethics towards manpower and human
resource.
 Third, is the ethics towards the personality (his
perception, traits and morality) of the administrators.
Islamic managerial ethics
 To the ethics towards the personality enhancement of
workers’ dynamics; his psychological set up and mental
satisfaction are fundamental.
 With regards to the work structure, the administrator
should be more definite about certain elements of work
structure, such as:
1.Division of work according to specialization and skill.
2. Subordination of personal interests.
3.Authority and responsibility.
Islamic managerial ethics
 on the human resource dimension of administration,
Islam believes the overall well being of the employees
such as:
 paying their salary on time
 giving them enough workloads
 providing incentives according to their work and
productivity
 enhancing the employees’ team spirit
 and clear set of communication language
Ethical requirements for Engineers at work place
1. Safety: following safety rules and regulations is very
essential and necessary.
2. Equality environment. An environment which promotes
equal access to available opportunities
3. Justice and equality. Everyone should be given the
suitable job that he or she is able to do.
4. Working hours. For deciding the suitable time to work,
how long, utilizing the time of work efficiently.
5. payments/benefits should be based on the work and
effort of the worker.

6. Providing good and enough facilities for workers.
7. Accessibility of the company is needed, where workers of the
company are able to access the company without difficulties.
8. Cooperative, comfortable and friendly environment among the
workers is needed.

9. Career development for longer survival for
both staff and the company is also inevitably
needed. .
10. Freedom of personal belief and rights for everyone of
the staff is necessary.
11. Transparency and tolerance is needed.
