the oil and rig crews.
Technical Definition
A “Global Positioning System (GPS) is a radio navigation system for providing the location of
GPS receivers with great accuracy” [3]. In the outer atmosphere there are 24 satellites which are
powered by solar energy, orbiting around the planet and transmitting signals to earth. The “GPS
receivers take the information and use triangulation to calculate the user’s exact location.
Essentially, the GPS receiver compares the time a signal was transmitted with the time it was
received. The time difference tells the GPS receiver how far away the satellite is which
determines the user’s position and displays it on the navigation system” [4].
Technical Description
Most of the GPS navigation systems are rectangles and car mounted. There are also GPS that are
handhelds, which are smaller than an ordinary navigation system, which fits right into the
individual’s hand. These are made for people who hike a lot in the woods or mountains and are
trying to locate a nearby shelter. People are able to connect their GPS to the computer via USB
cable and download new maps off the internet, which will update the current map with new
communities, points of interests and text to speech.
A “Point of Interest is a specific location that someone will find useful or interesting” [5], like a
shopping mall, gas station, hospitals, shelters, etc. “Text to Speech is a voice prompt that is built

in into the navigation systems. Instead of looking at the screen while driving and following the
highlighted red, when a destination is set, the voice prompt will typically give information such
as the distance you need to cover and the direction you need to go in” [6]. For example it will say
“In 140 meters, turn right on Oak Street.”
Both the TomTom GO930T and Garmin Nuvi 775T have a shiny mirror frame casing. The screen
size is 4.3” color touch widescreen. The 4.3” is derived from measuring the screen diagonally.
The screen is 16:9 format LCD with 480*272 pixels. It also contains integrated high quality
speakers, which are used for voice prompt. The TomTom GO930T and The Garmin Nuvi 775T
come with preinstalled mapping for Europe, USA and Canada [7].
Navigation systems are easy to set up and work with. First the individual needs to car mount the
navigation stand that came with the GPS on the dashboard or windshield. Next, is to clip on the
navigation system on to the stand. Afterwards, turn on the power, (which is located on the left
side of the GPS) and it will automatically locate the person’s location. Once it’s on, the person is
able to set his/her destination or look for a point of interest nearby. Once it’s set, the individual
must follow its route, which is highlighted in red, and green (when taking turns) in order to reach
his/her destination. If by any chance, the person makes a wrong turn, the route will be
automatically recalculated.
In Figure 3, The TomTom GO930T Navigation System is fully labelled and highlighting each
part of the map, with a destination set.

Battery life
The battery life is the minimum time period that a battery will continue to power an electrical
device after a full charge. The longer a battery life, the longer time a GPS can work without
additional power supply.
The Garmin Nuvi 775T GPS has 3 hours of battery life time [9].
The TomTom GO930T GPS has 5 hours of battery life time [13].
The battery life time of the Garmin Nuvi 775T is 2 hours less than the TomTom GO930T, which
indicates the TomTom GO930T can last longer than the Garmin Nuvi 775T in outdoor conditions
without recharging.
Dimensions
The dimensions show the width, height and depth of the product; this data will show how big the
device looks. A smaller size of the product is more portable to use and easy to carry.
8. GPS Relative Merits Report P a g e | 5 By:Toor and Xie
The Garmin Nuvi 775T has dimensions of 12.2cm × 8cm × 2cm [10].
The TomTom GO930T has dimensions of 11.68cm × 8.38cm × 2.28cm [14].
The Garmin Nuvi 775T is only 0.52 cm longer than the TomTom GO930T in width, 0.38 cm less
in height and 0.28 cm less in depth. The difference is not very significant since both products are
small devices and easy to carry.
Warranty
The warranty is an agreement about a product between a seller and a buyer regarding qualities or
services. It details the conditions and time period under which the seller will replace or fix the
problems of the product without cost to the buyer. Purchasing an electronic is always in the risk
of functional faults. The warranty will provide a sense of security for the purchaser, a longer
period of warranty will give a longer guarantee from the seller.
The Garmin Nuvi 775T has one year of warranty [10].
The TomTom GO930T has one year of warranty [14].
Both GPS receivers have a one year warranty, which indicates this criteria is not very significant
on choosing a right GPS for the oil and rig crews.
Traffic Service
The traffic service allows you to get real-time traffic updates by using a FM signal [11]. This
service gives you a warning of any traffic situation on your route such as accidents or traffic
jams. This service has a great advantage in which it allows the drivers to save time while
avoiding traffic congestions. However, this is usually a pay service for GPS customers and the
annual fee is around $60 [15]. Different companies provide different packages to their GPS users.
The Garmin Nuvi 775T provides free lifetime traffic service [11].
The TomTom GO930T provides one year free traffic service [13].
Traffic service is an essential service to the drivers in which allow drivers to know the real-time
traffic issues in advance and get an alternate route around to avoid traffic jams, this will help
make the crews more efficient.
Safety Features
Safety is always the most important issue to all the drivers. When in an emergency situation,
drivers will need to locate themselves as soon as possible and find the closest emergency service
facilities such as hospitals, police stations, vehicle services or gas stations.
The Garmin Nuvi 775T provides “where am I” emergency locator and “speed limit display” [12].
The TomTom GO930T provides “Help me” emergency locator [13].
9. GPS Relative Merits Report P a g e | 6 By:Toor and Xie
Both two models have emergency locators to locate drivers quickly. The Garmin Nuvi 775T also
has the enhanced safety feature of “speed limit display” to remind drivers the speed limits in all
areas. In order to drive safely, always follow the speed limits in order to prevent accidents or
getting a fine.
Conclusion
Based on the above comparison of the Garmin Nuvi 775T and the TomTom Go930T GPS
navigation systems, the following conclusions were drawn:
The TomTom GO930T has 2 hours longer battery life than the Garmin Nuvi
775T.
The dimensions of the Garmin Nuvi 775T are smaller than the TomTom GO930T,
but the difference is not significant.
Both the Garmin Nuvi 775T and the TomTom GO930T provide a 1 year warranty.
The Garmin Nuvi 775T provides free lifetime traffic service, while TomTom
GO930 only provides one year limited traffic service.
Both the Garmin Nuvi 775T and the TomTom GO930T have the function of
emergency locator, but the Garmin Nuvi 775T also has “speed limit display” to
enhance its safety features.
Recommendation
For oil and rig crews, the Garmin Nuvi 775T is the ideal GPS navigation system because it not
only provides advanced navigation service, but also provides free lifetime traffic service to help
users know real-time traffic including updates every minute and also saves the individual $60 per
year. In addition, the Garmin Nuvi 775T has the enhanced safety feature of “speed limit display”
which will remind the drivers about the speed limits in all areas and keep workers driving safely.
