Critical Reflection
Being in sports almost my whole life has given me many examples of leaders,
as well as have helped me to understand what leadership styles I am more
confortable with. I have experienced different leadership styles, and now that we
went more in deep about leadership, I can understand the styles better.
One time when I was 17 years old, we were training with a new coach, because
she was going to carry out the process of my team for the next games. I remember
that we were going to have an important game the next week. The team wasn’t
sure, if she was going to be able to replace our last coach, since we were very
conformable with him and already knew how he worked. But, she surprised us;
because, she had many leadership abilities that would impact in the way we
developed on the field. For example, she was very communicative with the team
about the goals and the commitment needed. She gained the confidence of every
team member of the team, and was able to install the passion and willingness to
reach the team’s goal.
As a result, the team had one of the best tournaments, and every team member
improved individually as well as in a collective way. Since the tournament the team
had a significantly improvement, and although the leadership style change could go
two ways, since the tournament was very close, it ended up to be the best
decision. This is because, as I mentioned before, the team already new the first
coach leadership style very well, and with the arrived of the new coach the team
could do not want to follow her instructions or the way she wanted to work.
However, since the new coach was very clear with what she wanted, as well as
was willing to hear every team member, and accepted responsibility for every
decision taken, then the result was positive.
This happened because of the good team manage that the new coach had, as
well as the openness and receptiveness of the team members. This was all
teamwork. And, as we have been seen in class, emotional intelligence and
leadership development go hand-by-hand, and this anecdote was an example of it.
Therefore, leaders are really important in the development of a team no matter the
age, since it would be reflected on the results.
