Chanti Cup in Full Swing
Monday 21st
December, 2015-St. George’s-
Since its revival about 4 years ago, the Chanti Cup has been growing and this year
it has attracted more teams and fans. Participation has increased from a low of 6 to
a high of 16 this year. The tournament which started about 30 yrs ago came to a
halt for about ten (10) years due to a lack of sponsorship.
In 2011, a team of young men from the village came together and started the
Chantimelle Sports Academy and was fortunate to receive sponsorship thereby re-
igniting the local village tournament and naming it the "Chanti Cup".
Now, the tournament is still contributing to the development of football in the
parish of St.Patrick’s.
Presently, the round robin stage of the competition has been completed. The 16
teams were divided into 3 zones. In zone 1, Expired Sea Coconut is top of the table
with 12 points after playing 4 matches and winning them all. In zone 2, Pluto leads
with 10 points after winning 3 matches and drawing 1. While in Zone 3,PG United
tops the group with 10 points also winning 3 games and drawing 1.
The top 2 teams from each zone along with the top 2 losers qualified for the knock
out quarter final round. They are Expired Sea Coconut, Pluto, PG United, Blues,
Mt.Craven United, Veterans, Waltham United and Warhead Samaritan.
President of the Chantimelle Football Academy, Jelani Glean says, “Chanti Cup
was re-started in 2011 mainly as a platform to give young players an opportunity to
showcase their skill at the beautiful game as well as identify new talent for the local
village club Chantimelle FC. However, the tournament is also a driver for
socioeconomic activity in the village for 3 months of the year.”
Glean further stated, “We get young players as well as past senior players involved
by assisting them in getting sponsorship for their teams. We motivate them through
awards recognizing the best youth and senior player.”
Matches in the 2015 ‘Chanti Cup’ are usually played on Saturdays and Sundays
with 2 matches featured each day; 2.30pm & 4.30pm respectively.
