Allied Visual Artists: Summary_doc
1. After 11 years of college and 3 years of research and development (while recuperating from multiple
knee surgeries), I founded Allied Visual Artists. I used my 1908, 3 house property, I had purchased for
my 25th birthday, as collateral to finance the equipment lease & purchases required, plus all the
remodeling of the main house that was to become AVA's studio in Hollywood, CA.
My goal was to use computers in animation production in-oder to compete with foreign production
services; I had walked (so to speak) the Local 839 Cartoonists Union's picket lines of '77 in a
wheelchair to protest Hanna Barbera's initial enterprise in Mexico, which later lead to their Asian
conglomerates. We cursed them at the time, but if it had not been for Bill and Joe's greed, we might not
enjoy all that is "Anime" today!
I was 30 years old, setting myself up as Founder of a full service 2-D computer animation facility, one
of the very first in the world, that would produce several productions per year, for studios large and
small, with a staff of no more than 15.
It took over a decade of hard work, several refinancing plans, and a lot of direct interplay with
hardware manufacturers & software developers to get the increases in computer color depth &
resolution needed to record to 35mm film, and thereby, finally realize my initial goal of Ink & Paint for
$3 per cel.
My second goal for Allied Visual Artists was some combination of a Sony Pictures & Cal Arts,
(production, distribution and education under one roof), would have been realized had not 2 people I
trusted done unexpectedly despicable acts, and I hadn't been mugged soon after.
