Arthur Guinness was born on September 24, 1725 in Celbridge, Co. Kildare. He used money left to him in Archbishop Price's will to buy his first small brewery. He later bought a larger brewery called St. James Gate Brewery in Dublin. The brewery grew to become very successful and the largest in Ireland. Arthur had 21 children with his wife Olivia Whitmore, though only 10 survived. He passed away in 1803, leaving the brewery to his three sons.
