Editor's Notes
Although the conference only lasted three days there was other meetings happening before hand so i decided to go early and meet up with software developers and to get to know my way around the Mandalay Bay, the intentionally make casinos hard to navigate so you never leave, so it is was good to have that time to take a wander around and familiarise myself with the class locations and the main event halls.
In all i attended 15 classes and several keynote sessions and lunchtime presentations, the most notable one being the Autodesk Subscription lunch presentation on the technologies they have been producing in the labs, i will go into more of that later.
Another big part of AU is the networking, it was great to meet so many like minded people and share of ideas and discuss some of the problems we have all been experiencing. Id rather learn from other peoples mistakes then make them myself. It is a very good environment for sharing information and experiences.
AB220-1 BIM Collaboration working with Revit remotely – interesting to see how other firm are using private clouds to increase model efficiency, hold the record for the largest model known to man (a 43GB model)
CR234-1 Autodesk Navisworks TimeLiner – Some interesting tips on workflow and producing 4D timelines in Navisworks
CM327-1 The BIM Manager Career Path – Basic but useful lecture about the evolution of the title BIM manager and the presenter encouraged everyone to help standardise this title.
AB330-5L Au Bon Panel: Baking your own Adaptive Components and Panels – Workshop working with adaptive components, I had used them but it was great to see some of the more advanced things that adaptive compnents can do. Now I need a reason to use them.
AB326-1V Into The Void: Zen of Creating Complex Structural Form With Revit – Outstanding presentation from Phil Reed one of the initial developers of Revit. This was a very fast paced presentation and I picked up a lot of good tips. Really recommend viewing this one.
AC416-2 Para metrics Master Class – Para metrics in AutoCAD, I wanted to see what AutoCAD had to offer in this field and the answer is not very much. Good presenter but once you have appreciated the functionality of Revit you cant go back to AutoCAD.
CR319-2L How to Create a BIM Execution Plan: A Hands on Workshop – I had a lot of hope for this class but it turned out to be a 2+1/2 hour chat. I think the guys that presented this class recently presented at the LRUG and mentioned that the US is 5 years ahead of the UK. From what I saw the UK Is miles ahead of the US.
SE231-1 Customise the graphical column schedule. – What did I learn from this session: That it cant be done intelligently, this was a work around 2D waste of time.
It was good to see some Autodesk present what they are working on and it is extremely impressive, i would definitely recommend taking a look if you haven't checked out the labs site already. A few of the more impressive development were:
Project Neon
Project Neon is a rendering service that offers greater productivity and a faster turnaround of photorealistic renderings by leveraging the power and compute capabilities of the cloud.
Project Photofly
Capturing the reality as-built for various purposes (renovation, energy analysis, add-on design, etc.) is now becoming possible using your standard digital camera thanks to advanced computer vision technologies developed by Autodesk, called Camera Factory, and now made available through Project Photofly.
Project Bluestreak
Autodesk Project Bluestreak is a cloud-based collaboration solution that helps AEC project teams collaborate informally and coordinate their work efficiently.
