Abstract
 The banking industry plays a crucial part in the advancement of sustainable development. Because of its
performance as an intermediary, it can affect the pace and direction of this development.
 This literature study used Scopus-based publications. Based on the clusters, we have analyzed 486
publications to detect the research gaps and recommend new study topics.
 The findings provided us with avenues for further investigation. We have explored the importance of the
above papers and articles and assessed citation links between the most significant articles to determine their
relationships.
 Our job is to help researchers discover new avenues for expanding their present expertise while also
pointing forth new avenues for exciting and innovative studies.
Keywords: Sustainable Banking; Bibliometric Analysis; Sustainable Development; Vos Viewer
Introduction
 Sustainable banking encompasses a wide range of practices and technology that aim to reduce the negative
effects of banking on the surrounding environment (Kumar & Prakash, 2019).
 Adopting banking practices that are less harmful to the environment will not only benefit the globe but will
also save money, reduce the risk of fraud or error caused by humans, and simplify business operations
(Biswas, 2011).
 Ethical banks, also known as sustainability or green banks, place a premium on environmental protection
(Igbudu et al., 2018).
 Banks need to do exhaustive environmental studies of all projects before providing financing for those
projects.
 This research paper is divided into six sections: the introduction, where we introduce the topic of
sustainable banking and the value of bibliometric analysis in the current context; the literature review,
which covers the second section; the study's objective, which covers the third; the research methodology,
which covers the fourth; the analysis and interpretation of the results, which covers the fifth; and the
conclusion, which covers the last sections.
Literature Review
 Banks play a key role in the long-term prosperity of any nation, which is why the concept of "green
banking" has gained popularity. Changes in the financial, economic, and ecological systems are causing the
financial services industry to adapt by adopting new ethical suggestions and principles (Lymperopoulos et
al., 2012; San-Jose et al., 2009).
 Transferring resources to climate-vulnerable sectors aids in the adaptation of environmentally sound
practices, lessens climatic hazards, and promotes restoration (Part & Kim, 2020).
 Banks are promoting their CSR initiatives since "green banking" has become a synonym for "sustainable
banking" (Kärnä et al., 2003).
 Banks worldwide use eco-friendly practices to boost their public profiles (Evangelinos et al., 2009).
 Banks, industry, and the economy all gain from reduced carbon footprints made possible by greening
banking (Bihari & Pandey, 2015).
 Sustainable banking principles have been slow to be adopted by India's banking industry (Sahoo and
Nayak 2007).
 The majority of research on the long-term viability of India's banking sector has been on green banking
practices (Tara and Singh 2014) and CSR initiatives (Narwal 2007).
Objectives
1. To find out the most influential authors in the Sustainable Banking Domain.
2. To find out which country does the most research in the Sustainable Banking
Domain.
3. To find out the research gaps in Sustainable Banking Domain.
Research Methodology
Data Collection
 Data were extracted from the Scopus database between the years 1990 and 2022.
 A total of 486 research publications were taken into consideration for this study. It was discovered that
sustainable banking gained momentum beginning in 2008.
Methodology
 This study employed a bibliometric approach using VOS viewer software.
 It will help us determine who the most influential author is on a certain subject, and it will also assist
scholars in identifying knowledge gaps.
 Over the last decade, the bibliometric approach has gained popularity.

486 research publications were
developed over a period of thirty-
two years.
19 articles were published in 2015;
20 in 2016; 18 in 2017; 39 in 2018;
47 in 2019; 70 in 2020; 83 in 2021,
and 54 in 2022.
Cont.
We have considered only those
countries which have a minimum
of 10 research publications. The
United States has the maximum
number of published articles
totaling 58. Whereas, the United
Kingdom has the most number
of citations (1853) across the
world. China stands second in
terms of the number of articles,
while the United Kingdom is
third and India is in fourth place
with 43 articles and 346
citations. Russian Federation and
Turkey both have 10 articles
with 40 and 104 citations,
respectively.
Cont.
Only those institutions that have at
least two publications were considered,
so we found a total of 13 institutions
that fulfilled the above criteria.
Department of Commerce, University
of Jammu, has full citation standing at
83. Business school, York St John
University, Lord Mayor's Walk, United
Kingdom stands at 2nd position,
Department of Technology
Management, University Teknikal
Malaysia stands at 3rd position, and

Here, we've only counted works by authors
cited at least 100 times; we discovered 21
such authors in all. The authors with the most
citations were PRETTY J, TOULMIN C, and
WILLIAMS S (631 each), followed by
RAHMAN A (407) and WEBER O. (233).
WAJDI DUSUKI A had 102 citations and was
in the 21st position. These citations network
helps the researcher to refer to the most
prominent article in their research.
Cont.
keyword network was
constructed by selecting just
the keywords that happened
10 times or more. The
occurrence counts for
"banking," "sustainable
development," and
"sustainability" were 293, 251,
and 171, respectively. Using
this keyword network map,
researchers can identify
promising new avenues of
inquiry within their field.
Many promising avenues for
future study were identified in
the fields of "green banking,"
"environmental economics,"
"sustainable finance," and
"data envelopment analysis."
Conclusion
 Researchers have found that bibliometric analysis helps them determine which authors, countries, organizations, and
keywords are most often used to discuss a specific topic.
 It will help the researchers to understand essential parts of any research topic. In this study, we looked at the crucial
authors and countries researching sustainable banking and listed them.
 JAN A, SCHOLTENS B, and WEBER O are well-known authors based on the number of research articles they have
published, while PRETTY J, TOULMIN C, and WILLIAMS S have the most citations. This means that the first
objective has been met.
 Regarding research articles and total link strength, the United States was a significant country, while the United
Kingdom was a major country in terms of citations.
 The Keywords network lets us find possible research topics that have a lot of room for more study in the sustainable
banking field, which made this research's third objective come true. Many promising avenues for future study were
identified in the fields of "green banking," "environmental economics," "sustainable finance," and "data envelopment
analysis."

PPT_A Bibliometric Analysis of Sustainable Banking.pptx

  • 1. Title A Bibliometric Analysis of Sustainable Banking Girish Garg*, Mohd. Shamshad **, Bhavna Sharma *** Presented By Girish Garg Assistant Professor School of Finance & Commerce Galgotias University
  • 2. Abstract  The banking industry plays a crucial part in the advancement of sustainable development. Because of its performance as an intermediary, it can affect the pace and direction of this development.  This literature study used Scopus-based publications. Based on the clusters, we have analyzed 486 publications to detect the research gaps and recommend new study topics.  The findings provided us with avenues for further investigation. We have explored the importance of the above papers and articles and assessed citation links between the most significant articles to determine their relationships.  Our job is to help researchers discover new avenues for expanding their present expertise while also pointing forth new avenues for exciting and innovative studies. Keywords: Sustainable Banking; Bibliometric Analysis; Sustainable Development; Vos Viewer
  • 3. Introduction  Sustainable banking encompasses a wide range of practices and technology that aim to reduce the negative effects of banking on the surrounding environment (Kumar & Prakash, 2019).  Adopting banking practices that are less harmful to the environment will not only benefit the globe but will also save money, reduce the risk of fraud or error caused by humans, and simplify business operations (Biswas, 2011).  Ethical banks, also known as sustainability or green banks, place a premium on environmental protection (Igbudu et al., 2018).  Banks need to do exhaustive environmental studies of all projects before providing financing for those projects.  This research paper is divided into six sections: the introduction, where we introduce the topic of sustainable banking and the value of bibliometric analysis in the current context; the literature review, which covers the second section; the study's objective, which covers the third; the research methodology, which covers the fourth; the analysis and interpretation of the results, which covers the fifth; and the conclusion, which covers the last sections.
  • 4. Literature Review  Banks play a key role in the long-term prosperity of any nation, which is why the concept of "green banking" has gained popularity. Changes in the financial, economic, and ecological systems are causing the financial services industry to adapt by adopting new ethical suggestions and principles (Lymperopoulos et al., 2012; San-Jose et al., 2009).  Transferring resources to climate-vulnerable sectors aids in the adaptation of environmentally sound practices, lessens climatic hazards, and promotes restoration (Part & Kim, 2020).  Banks are promoting their CSR initiatives since "green banking" has become a synonym for "sustainable banking" (Kärnä et al., 2003).  Banks worldwide use eco-friendly practices to boost their public profiles (Evangelinos et al., 2009).  Banks, industry, and the economy all gain from reduced carbon footprints made possible by greening banking (Bihari & Pandey, 2015).  Sustainable banking principles have been slow to be adopted by India's banking industry (Sahoo and Nayak 2007).  The majority of research on the long-term viability of India's banking sector has been on green banking practices (Tara and Singh 2014) and CSR initiatives (Narwal 2007).
  • 5. Objectives 1. To find out the most influential authors in the Sustainable Banking Domain. 2. To find out which country does the most research in the Sustainable Banking Domain. 3. To find out the research gaps in Sustainable Banking Domain.
  • 6. Research Methodology Data Collection  Data were extracted from the Scopus database between the years 1990 and 2022.  A total of 486 research publications were taken into consideration for this study. It was discovered that sustainable banking gained momentum beginning in 2008. Methodology  This study employed a bibliometric approach using VOS viewer software.  It will help us determine who the most influential author is on a certain subject, and it will also assist scholars in identifying knowledge gaps.  Over the last decade, the bibliometric approach has gained popularity.

  • 8. Cont. We have considered only those countries which have a minimum of 10 research publications. The United States has the maximum number of published articles totaling 58. Whereas, the United Kingdom has the most number of citations (1853) across the world. China stands second in terms of the number of articles, while the United Kingdom is third and India is in fourth place with 43 articles and 346 citations. Russian Federation and Turkey both have 10 articles with 40 and 104 citations, respectively.
  • 9. Cont. Only those institutions that have at least two publications were considered, so we found a total of 13 institutions that fulfilled the above criteria. Department of Commerce, University of Jammu, has full citation standing at 83. Business school, York St John University, Lord Mayor's Walk, United Kingdom stands at 2nd position, Department of Technology Management, University Teknikal Malaysia stands at 3rd position, and Faculty of Management Studies, University of Central Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan stands at 4th position in term of citations.

The authors with the most citations were PRETTY J, TOULMIN C, and WILLIAMS S (631 each), followed by RAHMAN A (407) and WEBER O. (233). WAJDI DUSUKI A had 102 citations and was in the 21st position. These citations network helps the researcher to refer to the most prominent article in their research.
  • 12. Cont. keyword network was constructed by selecting just the keywords that happened 10 times or more. The occurrence counts for "banking," "sustainable development," and "sustainability" were 293, 251, and 171, respectively. Using this keyword network map, researchers can identify promising new avenues of inquiry within their field. Many promising avenues for future study were identified in the fields of "green banking," "environmental economics," "sustainable finance," and "data envelopment analysis."
  • 13. Conclusion  Researchers have found that bibliometric analysis helps them determine which authors, countries, organizations, and keywords are most often used to discuss a specific topic.  It will help the researchers to understand essential parts of any research topic. In this study, we looked at the crucial authors and countries researching sustainable banking and listed them.  JAN A, SCHOLTENS B, and WEBER O are well-known authors based on the number of research articles they have published, while PRETTY J, TOULMIN C, and WILLIAMS S have the most citations. This means that the first objective has been met.  Regarding research articles and total link strength, the United States was a significant country, while the United Kingdom was a major country in terms of citations.  The Keywords network lets us find possible research topics that have a lot of room for more study in the sustainable banking field, which made this research's third objective come true. Many promising avenues for future study were identified in the fields of "green banking," "environmental economics," "sustainable finance," and "data envelopment analysis."
