Giampaolo Lanzieri from Eurostat presented statistical facts and tools for monitoring preparedness for demographic changes in the EU. He showed that migration has overtaken natural population change as the main driver of population growth in the EU. By 2050, migration could increase the total EU population by over 50 million people compared to without migration. However, EU populations are also aging rapidly. Lanzieri discussed challenges like population decline, aging, and integration and presented indicators and tools like the Active Aging Index and Migrant Integration Policy Index that can help monitor preparedness for these challenges. He proposed that combining different indicators could provide an aggregated measure of preparedness across member states.
