PHARMACEUTICS DEPARTMENT
RESEARCH REPORT
NAME: GHADIR GAMAL ALY.
UNIVERSITY: AIN SHAMS.
FACULTY: PHARMACY.
LEVEL: 4TH LEVEL.
The Research period in Pharmaceutics department provided a very productive experience. On the first day, Dr. Rania
Hathout gave us a brief note about the department, its history and its work. She showed us the research laboratories and the
different topics the researchers work on. During the following days, we worked with Dr. Eman El-Marakby on her research on
Chitosan. We learned about chitosan nanoparticles and their usage in drug delivery system. As its biocompatibility and non-
toxicity makes it attractive as a neutral agent for delivery of active agents, thus widely used in sustained release drugs.
Afterwards, we helped Dr. Eman in preparing CS/TPP (chitosan-tripolyphosphate). Briefly, chitosan and TPP were dissolved in
acetic acid and distilled water to obtain solutions with adjusted PH-value. The chitosan nanoparticles were obtained upon
addition of TPP solution into chitosan solution under mild mechanical stirring at room temperature. The drug-loaded
nanoparticles were similarly prepared by using a chitosan solution containing the drug.
The work involved many laboratory devices that taught us the slight differences between them, as Bath Sonicator and
Probe Sonicator which helped in decreasing the particle size to reach the nano seize. Then, the results were read by Zeta seizer
to measure the zeta potential of the particles.
Part of the research period was spent with Dr. Lydia. Her work mainly used chromatography with Silica gel as stationary
phase.
