My client Printing SA is an NPO representing and acting on behalf of approximately 800 printing, packaging, labelling and signage companies in the South African printing and packaging industry. The advertising we’ve produced aims to increase the number of members, and also, promote the importance of printing and packaging in the lives of South Africans and the South African economy. Whilst the advertising mediums utilised thus far have been billboards, citilites,
street pole posters and maxi posters, we will be advertising on TV soon. Here’s some of the work already flighted, and some, due to be flighted this year.

Without labelling, it’s nigh impossible telling. And yet, labelling,
and for that matter, printing,is taken for granted and not given
much consideration. Not that it should be. It’s just that, without
the involvement of printing and labelling companies in South
Africa (many of whom are our members), things as simple as
choosing a brand of pasta become so much harder. Fact is,
print plays a part in the lives of us all. Every day, in every way.
Print lives. Print will always live.

Unless you’re a connoisseur of the brand in question, you’d
have no way of knowing. Truth is, without labelling, your
favourite scotch could easily be mistaken for another scotch.
And yet labelling, and for that matter, printing, is not given
much consideration. Not that it should be.It’s just that, without
the involvement of printing and labelling companies in South
Africa (many of whom are our members), things as simple as
selecting a bottle of scotch become so much harder. Fact is,
print plays a part in the lives of us all. Every day, in every way.

Just for a day, imagine trying to do your shopping in an environment of
no labelling and no branding. One carton of milk would look like
another carton of milk. One tin of canned soup would look like another
tin of canned soup. And one bottle of tomato sauce would look like
another bottle of tomato sauce. The chances of you tearing your hair
out? Quite high, we’d imagine. And yet, this would be the order of the
day were it not for the involvement of packaging companies, labelling
companies and printing companies (many of whom are our members)
who bring products to life, differentiate them on shelf, and contribute to
making shopping the relatively simple process that it is today. Fact is,
print plays a part in the lives of us all.Every day,in every way.Print lives.
Print will always live.

As things stand, you’re either close to leaving school or have
already left and are at a loose end. It’s difficult getting into univer-
sity, unless you’re at the top of the class and your marks are
excellent. College? Yes, you could go to college. A job? Not too
many around,we’re afraid. One thing you could do is an appren-
ticeship. Right now, there’s a lack of skills in our country and if
you’ve done a trade, finding a job could be that much easier.
Which brings us to this ad. The printing and packaging industry
offers 33 of the 126 trades available in South Africa.Which means
that, within our industry, you’re sure to find one that you’ll find
appealing – especially if you’re into technology. The printing and
packaging industry employs some of the top technology in the
world, so if you’re keen, you might find that we are too. Our
contact details are below if you’d like to make contact.

The cellular phone you see here. It might be cutting-edge, slim,
technology-brilliant and in a seriously cool colour. And yet, like
most other cellphones, it won’t work without the involvement of
the printing industry. Why? Because most mobile devices today
have a card in them – made from cardboard. Printed, by a
printer. So if you ever hear that print is a dying technology, that
paper is a thing of the past and environmentally-unfriendly, and
that today everything is digital, please remember this ad.
Without the printing and packaging industry, and without the
involvement of printers, packaging companies and labellers –
many of whom are our members – products like cellular phones
and ipads might not do what they’re meant to. Sad. Print lives.
Print will always live.

OK,so here’s the thing. We don’t believe there will be many winners.
Simply because it’s practically impossible you getting through your
day without print touching your life in some way. (Unless you’re
asleep for 24 hours, climbing Everest or sledging across the Antarc-
tic). Assuming that you’re engaging in normal activity, and living a
normal suburban life, you’ll start your day on Facebook (your
mobile device has a circuit board that’s printed), have breakfast
(your cereal will come in a printed box) and go to work, taking in
the day’s headlines from PRINTED street pole posters. You don’t
work? OK, so you’ll go to the shop. To get some milk (which will
come in packaging that’s PRINTED).Thereafter, well, you’ll have the
whole day ahead of you.But go ahead and enter.Who knows,
R2 000 could go a long way.Print lives. Print will always live.

the perception that paper and printing play less of a role in our
lives than they used to is seriously wide of the mark.Truth is,we’re
as reliant on the printing industry as we’ve ever been. Consider
this: you’re wheeling your trolley down the aisle of your neigh-
bourhood supermarket looking for a particular brand of sweet-
corn and instead of shelves of sweetcorn brands you’re accus-
tomed to, you’re confronted by shelves of silver tins. The tins are
of similar size and not too much differentiates them. So how do
you choose between them, and how do you know which is the
brand you’re looking for? The fact is, without labelling, and
without packaging, shopping becomes, er, challenging. Next
time you shop, think of the ways that printing impacts your life
and makes things easier. Print lives. Print will always live.
